The Mask of Volesprit - Chapter 5 - Prologue of a War

For this chapter, I have changed a few things in the past chapter concerning infamy and the Aura of Darkness skill.

_________________

The sisters had shown Volesprit the way to the city’s slums’ vilest soul hideout. From what he heard from them, the soul inside were once so vile that they had turned into high level spirits in Hel. That was exactly what Volesprit was looking for. Vile, strong, and… disposable.

Yes. Volesprit had - once again - thought of new ways to use his originals skills, and he needed some guinea-pig for that. If he succeeded - and he would - he would have some soldiers at his disposition. The kind who wouldn’t hesitate to dirty their hands if needed. He was the kind of man for whom the idiom “kill two birds with one stone” was created.

You were first to discover the Lair of the Vile

Can’t gain any fame because of you class’ nature.

Experience from monsters and quests x2 for one week.

The moment Volesprit walked in the lair, two thugs landed to his sides and stabbed him. Annoyed, Volesprit asked:

“What do you think you scums are doing?”

The spirits’ jaws slackened as they watched their daggers disappear in Volesprit without affecting him in any way.

“What the …”

“Take this … Plasma Shot!”

As the thugs wondered how Volesprit stayed unaffected by their attacks - even if he was alive, which was a fact that already disturbed them a great deal, their attacks should have affected him - Circe and Cat called one of their two new skills and ruthlessly attacked the thugs.

Who looked at them even more dumbfounded... those attacks had hurt as much as a mosquito bite. That was normal. Just like the strong, just warriors who went to Valhallas, some souls that were sent to hell - whether valued highly by Hel herself, or so vile that their souls had been tainted beyond redemption - retained their strength. The thugs were, of course, the second type. The kind that hid in the slums because Hel couldn’t suffer them. And that released their frustration on the poor, innocent souls.

Of course, Circe and Cat were previously normal souls. The kind that had lost any strength. Thanks to Volesprit, they had regained some, but still, they were only level 1. While the thugs, while being some of the weakest in the lair, were over level 100.

The thugs soon regained their countenance. How dare those wenches attack them. They would pay for this. They would take their time, enjoy their suffering, and then …

As the thugs jumped on the girls, Volesprit caught the spirits by the throat. That was a hidden passive ability of his class, the ‘Lord of Souls’. Souls couldn’t harm him. Nor could they touch him, unless he allowed them to. But he had no such handicap. He could handle and harm them in any way he wanted. The only downside was, he gained no experience for killing them. Too harmless it seemed.

But still, they were food. And Cat and Circe who were now in his party weren’t subject to his handicap. As such, Volesprit allowed them to attack the thugs to their heart’s content while he held them. They emptied their mana bar and his - it looked like their links allowed them to take some of his mana for their own use - before Volesprit decided to end their suffering and called:

“Soul Eating.”

New Stat Added: ????

No information for now.

Level Up: Soul Eating [2]

Can create a greater variety of ghost.

Increase the strength of created ghosts.

Volesprit frowned as he looked at the new stat, but he was patient by nature and left the stat alone for now. He would learn soon enough what it was about.

Volesprit sat on the floor and asked the girl how much experience the kill had given them.

“A little more than four level.”

Circe answered him dilligently while ignoring her sister - who was making a fool of herself, laughing maniacally, shouting random stuff such as “why, you no longer showing off” or “tell me, how does it feel to be a steak?” - and opening her stat window.

“Hum … put everything into intelligence. This way, you will deal more damage, earn more experience, grow faster, have a bigger mana pool… Then we won’t have to take as many pauses, and in a few days, you will be able to take them out by yourselves.”

“Okay, we will do as you wish.”

“Don’t you have to ask Cat her opinion on the matter?”

“Not really. Would you tell her to put everything into strength, she would do it without blinking. So would I.”

“Why would you? That would be the epitome of stupidity.”

“Maybe. But still, we would trust your judgement on the matter. Because in the end, you would show us you were right. I have no doubt about this.”

“Thank you, Circe … I will try my best to be worthy of your trust.”

“You already are, my lord.”

“Okay … rest is over. I’m ‘hungry’. Let’s resume our exploration.”

“Yes, my lord.”

Volesprit got up and walked to the next door, Cat and Circe floating behind him.

___________________________

Four thugs waited for them. Volesprit sighed and told the girls:

“Don’t forget to damage all of them as much as possible.”

“Yeeeees!” x2

“Who are you guys? And where are Almondo and Alphonso?”

Volesprit smirked and claimed:

“Believe me, you don’t want to know. Even so, I fear the four of you will soon join them in their trip.”

“What… I don’t know what you are talking about, but that’s pissing me off. So, dieeee!!!”

The youngest one jumped on Volesprit who yawned loudly when the ghostly blade sinked in him, and the kid was blasted away by the girls’ beam, casted with their new chant.

“Surprise!”

The thug who had landed on his ass looked so dumb that the girl couldn’t help but giggle a bit, before blasting him away once more with their beam.

“What the … you’ll pay for this, you bi …”

The thug was stopped mid-sentence by the girls’ attack. That enraged him so much that he rushed to them with a war cry, followed by his companions. Volesprit sighed, backhanded the first one - who rolled for a few meters - caught the second by the balls, threw him on the third, forced the last one to the ground, and stepped on him to stop him from moving.

The three thugs looked stunned for a few second - Volesprit couldn’t tell what the one who struggled at his feet looked like - during which the girls blasted them to their heart’s content while giggling. Then they stood up, and not having a drop of good sense, went back to the attack.

Volesprit pushed them back, while the girls went on rampage, launching plasma beams in all directions.

“No mana left, we’re done.”

Circe went to Volesprit side and, while Cat started kicking the man who struggled under Volesprit’s feet, she reported their situation.

“Ok, my turn then.”

Volesprit bent over and laid his hand on the thug who now struggled even more to escape - looked like he had a strong sense of self-preservation - and called his skill:

“Soul Eating.”

Volesprit got up and said with a dark smile on his face:

“Ok, girls, let's move. We have a lair to clean.”

_____________________

A little more than half a day had passed. The lair was now empty if not for the last room and Volesprit's 'Soul Eating' skill was on the verge of hitting Intermediate level. That hadn't taken as much time as Volesprit had expected at first.

While the number of grade F souls needed to level up from level n to level (n+1) followed the equation: N=5*2n - which meant that while one needed to eat 10 souls to level up from level 1 to level 2, you would need to eat 2560 grade F souls to level up from beginner level 9 to intermediate level 1 - a higher quality of souls provided more experience. To be more precise, each new soul grade multiplied the experience provided by 5, and the level of the host seemed to influence the amount of experience gained greatly.

And though the first thugs were weaklings level 60s ghosts whose soul grade was F, as they dived deeper in the lair, the level and the grade of souls increased, making the skill proficiency rise like Google stocks.

The ‘Soul Manipulation’ and ‘Aura of Darkness’ skills had hit Intermediate level a few hours ago. Now, Volesprit was capable of storing 10 souls inside of him, using three ghosts simultaneously, whose max grade was now D, and his ‘Aura of Darkness’ defensive prowess multiplied the effect of his infamy by 2.

As for Cat and Circe … well, their level was now a little over 60. Even with Volesprit’s help, they had still killed around 600 ghosts whose level had varied from 60 to 180.

Volesprit eyed the door to the lair’s last room with a confident smile and asked the girls:

“Are you ready, Circe? Cat?”

“Yes.” x2

“Ok. Let’s go, then.”

Volesprit pushed the door and stepped in.

You found the ‘Command Center’ of ‘the Lair of the Vile’

In the middle of the room stood a throne, and on the throne was a giant of a … soul, with long white hair and bored red eyes. The kind women would qualify as gorgeous if they were into the wild type. On the sides were twelve of his followers.

“Who are you to step in my lair, human.”

The bandit king tone was blank. Volesprit could almost feel his boredom spreading around him.

“Your master, dimwit. Now, please submit. Or disappear, your call.”

The bandit king didn’t react. He just stood there, and observed him. But two of his follower did. Shouting “Just die, you f*cker!”, they dashed at Volesprit and stabbed him.

“That makes it easier. Thank you for sparing me a headache, I had only ten free souls and one ghost spot left. ‘Soul Eating.’”

“Now back to business. As I said, I am your master, Volesprit.”

A light shone in the bandit’s eyes. That looked like … interest. The bandit king got up and claimed:

“The ‘Lord of Souls’, hm? My name is Belial. ‘Bringer of Carnage’, Belial. What do you want from me, Lord of Souls.”

“Bringer of Carnage? Never heard of this before? Is this your class or your title?”

“Both I guess. It’s the name that was given to the avatar of the god of Destruction, Malkir.”

“Never heard of him.”

“He has pretty much been forgotten by everyone after the church of Tyr hunted me, sealed my power, and sent me in Hel. Now… tell me, human. What did you come here for?”

Volesprit moved in his direction. Belial watched him with a blank face as he neared him. Volesprit stopped in front of him and smiled. Before catching him by the throat and lifting him. Volesprit was no longer smiling. Belial’s companions started to move but he stopped them with a single glare.

Killing Intent +1

“Now, Belial, this is your first lesson. ‘I’ am the Master. ‘You’ are the servant. You will learn modesty or you will disappear, cursing your stupidity. Am I well understood?”

“Ye… Yes, Master.”

Belial struggled to breathe as Volesprit tightened his grip.

“Good. Now, follow me. You guys too.”

“Or?”

Volesprit didn’t even turn his head in the direction where the voice had come from.

“Darkness Lance.”

His magic appeared in a split of second and pierced the poor soul.

“Or doesn’t exist in my vocabulary. It’s my way or the highway. And that doesn’t mean you can leave.”

Volesprit imprinted his voice with the force of his new skill. Everybody in the room knelt.

“Now, I offer you a choice. Submit and I will lead you to greatness. You will experience adventures you can’t even dream off. Or just disappear here, forgotten by all. Now decide.”

Belial then breathed deeply, a new light in his eyes, and claimed an ancient oath, followed by Cat, Circe and the ten ghost:

“I submit to your will … master. Wherever you steps lead you, I will follow. Whomever stands in your way, I will destroy. Whatever you value, I will protect. I shall be your sword, I shall be your shield. My will is yours to command. This I swear on my immortal soul.”

Volesprit then used all the money that had been added to his treasury and used it to repair the city, raze the slums and build new proper lodging, build a new temple for Hel, and then invested what was left in the city economy and art. Then he left town and took the road who leaded to Hel’s castle.

__________________________

“I’m back at last, my lady.”

Hel admired the Volesprit who had just taken off his mask for a few second, sighed dreamingly, shook her head, and retorted:

“At last, huh? You haven’t been away that long, my dear. Spending two months on training is a common thing. And you even came back looking darker than expected and brought some company. By the way, those are some cute little lambs you have here. And what a dashing young … wait, what is that thing doing here?”

“That? Do you mean Belial, lady Hel?”

“Yes. What is this thing doing in my place?”

“Obviously, I brought him in.”

Hel looked daze as she asked him.

“Why?”

“Because he looks like a nice meat-shield, doesn’t he? And because I can’t use the cute ‘little lambs’ as guinea pigs. That goes against my moral code.”

Hel glanced at Belial, obviously expecting a violent reaction, and as it didn’t come, turned back to Volesprit, even more confused than before.

“Why? Why isn’t he reacting? I know, who and what, he is, and once was. Still, you stand before him, claiming you’re going to use him in ways that would infuriate the calmest man and yet … nothing! That freaks me out!”

“Really? That’s strange … what did you expect? For him to rush to me and beat me to a pulp? Unlikely, isn’t it?”

“Hel no! That’s exactly what should have happened.”“Unlikely,yes. My lord found the right term.”

Belial and Hel answered in unison. Hel turned to Belial. The beast who looked down, refusing obstinately to make any sort of eye contact. Hel started to sweat abundantly.

“You see? My ‘friend’ here wouldn’t DARE raise his hand against me… he knows better. Now let’s go back to our main topic. As I said, at long last, I am back, my goddess. A little late, I admit. It’s not that the duty you gave me was that long, but… I had to put a little order in the city you gave me...”

A soft moan interrupted Volesprit, who looked for its source. And he found a sweaty, messy Hel, who lied in her throne as if she had no strength left. Seconds passed. Hel didn’t move. Worried, Volesprit asked:

“My lady… are you alright?”

“Hummm?? Aaaaah... yeeeeessss. So alright… I just… climaxed a little here.”

Volesprit watched her, completely stunned. For the first time in his life, he didn’t understand a word of what a person was saying.

“It’s your fault. You were… so cool, so dark, so dangerous… so hot. Like a Dark Lord. Like a Demon King. Like the Demon King of the Night.”

Hel was now giggling while blushing furiously.

Seeing that, Volesprit wisely decided to stay silent as, it seemed that the lady wasn’t right in the head.

Hel sighed when she met Volesprit eyes - they were devoid of any feelings - and muttered:

“It’s a wonder how this man can both excite and shame you at the same time without even batting an eyelash.”

“...”

“Ok, ok, I understand. Back to business… let’s see the result of your training. Volesprit’s Stats and Skills Windows.”

As the goddess Volesprit served under, Hel had of course full access to Volesprit’s data.

“Now as for the actual reward … what do you want? Weapons? Armors? New skills? Lands?”

Volesprit frowned and asked her:

“Isn’t that a little … too much for completing a training? To begin with, you earned nothing in return. Why should you reward me?”

“Because I want to!”

“...”

“Ok, ok. Because you are my avatar, the avatar of Hel, and as such, you are more or less the advertisement poster of my cult in Midgar. Those who will hear your of your feats might fear you or worship you. But, either way, that… respect you will earn will strengthen me. So… you completing your training - and that one in particular - deserves any reward I can offer. Now, what do you want.”

“I want access to knowledge.”

“Huh?”

“This is the land of the dead. The knowledge you have amassed should be second only to the goddess of Wisdom. And I want access to that particular knowledge. Magic, skills, weapons, armors … all of them are meaningless before the power of knowledge. To begin with, I am here now thanks to crumbs of what I found in the library of Migual. I bet yours will prove to be more exhaustive.”

“You bet it is. But I have better to offer than a mere access to my private library. Here, take this! Use it to your heart content, as it’s now yours to use.”

A book emitting an aura so dark it couldn’t even be compared with Volesprit’s, appeared in Hel’s hand. Volesprit came closer, bowed, reverently took the book, bowed once more, took a step back and then opened the book.

You Obtained the legendary Necronomicon

The necronomicon is the ego book created by Hel in an attempt to copy the creation process of goddess Aria’s book Babel.

Hel poured in it all the knowledge of hell’s library.

“Such generosity… even though I’m unfit to possess that book, I will do my best to prove myself worthy of your trust, my lady.”

Hel giggled, and answered flirtatiously:

“Don’t mind, hotties have nothing to prove. And you are THE hottie among hotties. I’m such a lucky girl. Freiya is going to turn green with envy.”

“...”

Volesprit reflected in how Hel had just succeeded in destroying in a split second the esteem she had earned by giving out such a fantastic reward. That was truly a god-level talent she had there.

Ignoring what Hel had just said, Volesprit bowed once again, and after exchanging a - meaningless - conversation, asked for Hel’s permission to leave her realm. She agreed, but not before handing him out another ring.

Volesprit tried to refuse politely at first but he understood that Hel wouldn’t let him go unless he gave in.

Gain Item: The Gentleman’s Ring

A ring created by Hel from Shadows.

Creates illusory clothes (doesn’t change anything but the charisma and elegance stats).

Permits Hel to choose what your outfit should look like at any moment.

Soul Bound to Volesprit

Stats:

Elegance +100

Charisma +20

Volespit sighed and put the - useless baggage - ring on his finger. As soon as the ring entered in contact with his skin, the One Ring emitted a dark aura, a second later, the ring had fused with the One Ring.

“Now, you can go.”

Hel saw him off with a nosebleed - she had changed his outfit to that of the ‘Phantom of the Opera’ - as Volesprit used his ‘Gate of Niflheim’ skill. Volesprit was back in Midgard, in the forest he was in a month ago, where he fought the men who had killed Cassandre - the little girl who owned a fox - but he wasn’t alone.

The men he had killed were here, waiting for him, and they weren’t alone. They came with the whole of their guild, and many more from the look of it.

“An ambush, huh? I see you guys didn’t grow any balls.”

Volesprit claimed that while calming assessing the situation. All the escape route had been cut. He was surrounded. By hundreds of players.

The future looked bleak.
