Chapter 3

Now, if Belladonna hears his thoughts, she would vomit blood on the spot.

She would rather die than fancy Villiars.

Unfortunately, the absurdity of Villiars’ conclusion was too much that no sane person could ever arrive at the same conclusion as him, and thus, this misunderstanding will persist.

On Donatella’s end, a similar phenomenon was happening in her mind. One might say that some traits do run in the family’s blood.

For the Brigandine siblings, it's their ability to jump to a conclusion that is, frankly, delusional.

Earlier, she had made a wish that her personal maid would shut her brother up, and all of a sudden— this chatty brother of hers suddenly turned back, livid, before his mouth hung open, agape as if he had come across an earth-shattering revelation!

And he was staring at an expressionless Belladonna.

In Donatella’s childish mind, perhaps her maid was able to sense her master’s wishes, and thus had done some miracle to shut her brother up!

Is this the power of a personal maid?!

Donatella thought, her eyes twinkling as she gazed upon her maid, whom she is beginning to like even more.

From the very beginning, she had chosen Belladonna to be her maid. It was moreso because they were of similar age. In her eyes, Belladonna is more akin to a living, breathing doll she can play with, and accompany her all around.

Yet, overtime, this particular maid of hers became her favorite.

One of the reasons why is because the maid only opens her mouth when Donatella wants her to do so.

When you live in a manor with Villiars, peace and quiet becomes a mythical creature, and Belladonna brings this creature back into Donatella’s life. Thus, the maid became a favorite of hers over the short duration of their master-servant relationship.

Belladonna felt a wave of unpleasantness awash over her. For some reason, the Brigandine siblings were looking at her. One had an expression filled with wonder, and the other held an expression of horror and complete shock.

She liked neither!

However, it doesn’t seem like Villiars is planning to fire her on the spot for glaring at him, yet she cannot be complacent.

“…is something the matter, My Lord? My Lady?” Belladonna asked as she walked towards them. Her eyes betrayed no hint of emotion as she glanced at their faces.

“N-no! Begone from my sight!” Villiars stammered, backing away from her. “No, nevermind! Donatella, I will be going first— luncheon! It’s lunch time!” The older Brigandine stuttered as he ran away, leaving them in the garden.

Was he too afraid of my glare?

Belladonna thought to herself. Perhaps she placed too much of her determination into her glare earlier, and it spooked the young lord away!

“Belladonna..” Donatella began softly as she took her maid’s hands into her own. Her turquoise eyes glimmered so brightly that it reminded of Belladonna of gems.

“My lady?”

“You are, the best maid I have ever had.”

“Pardon?”

Donatella let go of her hands as she walked away, her mood was soaring along the skies as Belladonna was left puzzled.

Nobles. They’re weird.

She thought to herself as a small smile broke on her face. It was the good kind of weird— to have someone praise the efforts you’ve made, to acknowledge the hard work and soul you have placed onto your craft, be it as simple as ensuring the washbasin water’s temperature is of acceptable standards.

That said, Belladonna didn’t mind this kind of weirdness.

At least, that was what she thought as she trailed behind Donatella, who was to meet with her parents for lunch.

Lunchtime was the hour where Belladonna wasn’t expected to do as much other than stand behind her lady as she ate.

Again, once the masters had dined, was when the servants were able to eat.

Belladonna stood motionless behind Donatella’s chair the entire time.

“Donatella, you seem to be in a good mood!” The lady’s mother, Bridgette spoke to her daughter with a lovely smile.

“Yes, mother! Belladonna makes me happy!” The young lady replied.

“Ah, I see!” Bridgette hummed as she looked at the younger maid. “Good, Belladonna. You’re adjusting well, and taking care of Donatella.” She continued, praising the young girl.

“It’s my duty to serve, My lady.” Belladonna bowed lightly. “I’m glad I could be of help..” she trailed off softly, at a loss in front of her employer

“Ah, dear girl, you’re already so much help! See how Donatella is happy!” Bridgette gushed.

“Don’t burden your maid too much, Donatella. She has other duties to attend to— but I suppose your spirits have been lifted ever since she came in.” Pietro Brigandine, the master of the house nodded with a smile.

The Brigandine Family, a barony near the countryside. They are among the kinder nobles who treated commoners very warmly. Despite being on the lower ranking among nobles, their virtue is nonetheless much more precious than any gem.

They have no enemies, and are neutral in every political battle. Noblemen or commoners, they treat with the same warmth.

Belladonna felt fortunate to have been saved by them, and even employed by them.

Yet, her little heart carried some regrets.

If only they were the ones who have found us instead of that noble…

Belladonna bit her lip as memories threatened to resurface. There was no use in thinking about useless things that have already transpired. It was best to use this energy into something much more worthwhile, such as thinking of what to do next and how to do it.

The young maid had already made her decision to protect the lady she serves.

She was not able to protect Narcissus, but for this family that had given her a new lease on life— she’ll ensure to protect them.

Lady Donatella at least deserves a wonderful life!

On the other hand, far from the cheerful mood of the Brigandine trio, a glum Villiars picked on his plate. He wasn‘t even in the mood to nitpick Belladonna’s supposed glumness and how it ruins his appetite. In fact, he can’t even look at the girl.

How can he?! The human doll of a maid their parents picked up has developed feelings for him!

Well, it’s not so strange that she does!

It’s simply because he found her presence abhorrent that he can’t even eat his meal!

“Villiars, my dear, why are you not eating?” Bridgette blinked, her eyes glimmering with a hint of worry. Normally, her son would be cheerful, boasting of his daily accolades, whether it’s being praised by his tutor or learning a new sword technique.

However, Villiars seemed quiet.

Too quiet.

“I’m alright, mother…” Villiars replied, his turquoise eyes trying to avoid looking at his sister, lest he catches a glance of Belladonna and her glances, that he describes to be lovesick in nature— which was actually far in reality as the only thing in the young maid’s head was dinner preparations and a reminder to monitor the lady’s laundry once she begins her afternoon lessons.

As one can see, it was far, far from lovesickness.

Yet, it seemed that Villiars had fully embraced the situation, for better or worse.

The reason why he was quiet was to place a lid on Belladonna’s growing feelings. What if, in his enthusiasm in boasting of his accolades, the young maid falls in love with him more? While he found her distasteful, he would never be such a boor that he would leave a trail of broken hearts.

Yes, as an esteemed noble, it was his sworn duty to protect the commoners, even from himself!

At least, that was how Villiars thought.

“Donatella, did you get into a fight with your brother?” Pietro smiled. To him, it was normal for siblings to fight every once in a while. The important part is making up to each other, and laughing about it in a few days!

“Eh? No! I don’t know what happened to him, he suddenly ran away when we were taking a walk. Isn’t that right, Belladonna?” Donatella gaped as she looked at her maid for any confirmation of her words.

Meanwhile, in the young noble girl’s mind, she herself wasn’t sure of why her brother was still quiet, but she appreciated this blessing from above.. well, behind. As according to her belief, Belladonna’s magic had done its work to grant her wish.

In reality, that so-called magic is just a glare, and her wish was granted due to a misunderstanding caused by her brother’s wild imagination.

“Yes, the young master seemed… disturbed.” The maid replied, picking her words carefully.

The young maid was extremely sure that Villiars’ strange demeanor was because he caught her glaring at him with such ferocity, yet she feels as if there was something even more to that story— perhaps she traumatized her young lord to an extent?

If so, then at the very least he’ll know how to behave in her presence?

But then again, why does it seem like her conclusion was wrong?

“I-It’s nothing, Mother..” so said the young lord.

For a moment, Pietro and Bridgette looked at their son, then their daughter, then the maid, and then each other. The room’s silence was quite tension-filled to the point one can cut it with a knife. The Brigandine husband and wife duo were racking their brains as to why their only son was acting oddly.

Then, Bridgette remembered something important.

“Ah!” Bridgette clapped her hands, as if she had finally solved the mystery. “I knew it, it’s because of that, right, Villiars?” She continued as she looked at her son with a smile.

“W-what?” Villiars blinked as he followed his mother’s gaze, and it landed on Donatella— but since Belladonna was standing a step behind Donatella’s chair, coupled with Villiars’ self-consciousness, he thought his mother was pertaining to the maid.

“Wh- wh— What of the maid?!” He yelled, rather shocked. He wasn’t expecting that his mother would catch on to the maid’s feelings so quickly!

If they find out of Belladonna’s feelings for him, they would send her away most likely, and replace her with some other maid; thus ruining the maid’s life, and his sister’s spirits will drop from the absence of her favorite maid!

“Of Belladonna? Silly Villiars, it’s of your sister and her fiancé!”

Now, it was Belladonna’s turn to grow pale.

Donatella’s what? Fiancé?!

Is the route for her life already planned?! Is destruction imminent?! Was there no way out for her young lady?!

Several thoughts raced within the young maid’s mind as she attempted to rack her brains for any sort of information. Donatella’s fiancé, or anything related to him!

Knowing the game’s trash narrative, and even trashier leads, the young maid was at the very least, 100% sure this so-called fiancé will lead her lady to death, if not a miserable end!

Perhaps Villiars’ route is the best option?!

The young maid snuck a glance at the young master, who was intently looking at her. She averted her gaze as she found his face distasteful—

No, there should be another way, a different way! I’ll die if I’ll be around him for the rest of my life!

Surely, if Villiars heard of her thoughts, he would die quite a bit inside.

“My what?” Donatella was equally perturbed. What fiancé? Why is it this was the first she has heard of it? “Mother, father, what?” She parrotted, seeming dumb, but in reality she was just extremely confused about the situation.

“Oh, darling, we were just about to surprise you!”

Surprises, are pleasant. Why am I not pleased?

Was what the young lady was thinking as she turned to look at her family, and even Belladonna for any sign of knowledge that they knew ahead of her.

“The son of Viscount Rainfell, Ramiel. He is of your age and you two seemed like a perfect match!” Bridgette giggled as from there, Donatella felt like she wanted to tear the smile off of her mother’s face.

Mother, why are you smiling? Mother, you’re giving me away?

Donatella thought to herself as she looked at Belladonna— her maid’s expression outlines exactly what the young lady was feeling. Disbelief, horror and a silent rage for the injustice her master is suffering from!

—actually, Belladonna was feeling disbelief and horror, because Ramiel Rainfell, her lady’s supposed fiancé, is part of the male lead line up in Lady Donatella’s Wonderful Life.

Born to a humble Viscount family, Ramiel Rainfell is indeed a suitable match for the young Donatella, similar in age, and arguably, similar in temperament— in the eyes of her lady’s doting parents, he is the safest choice for Donatella to marry. The Rainfell family didn’t have any sort of political enemy, nor were they cruel towards their people.

Yes, objectively, he would be the one to give Donatella a wonderful life.

In a decent otome game, perhaps— but we’re talking about that crap otome game that bankrupted a company, and caused the psychological and emotional distress of every sister-in-arm that played the damn thing.

Of course there would be something horribly wrong with him!!

Belladonna’s lilac eyes turned to slits as she finally pieced her memories together. Her previous life definitely played Ramiel’s route, which she thinks is just a route for women who want to be emotionally destroyed.

Not because Ramiel has a compelling backstory. No.

It’s because Ramiel would grow up to be a womanizer that would repeatedly break her lady’s heart.

In the beginning, Ramiel has a similar temperament with Donatella. He was a bright, kindhearted boy that was well-loved by his family, by his servants, and even by his fiancéé, Donatella.

They were set to be married after they complete their studies in the Royal Academy, located in the country’s capital, Rivierre.

However, the moment they entered the academy, was when things began to fall apart.

Ramiel would become a womanizer of unprecedented skill and wit. It was jarring to see the once so gentle young Ramiel become a well-known debaucher. From several other noble girls, to commoner girls, to even their maids.

He broke Donatella’s heart multiple times, and he even broke off their engagement at the beginning of the game, but the player would have the choice of taking him back once Donatella had successfully gathered the attention of the other male leads, and the player was to choose her route.

Ramiel’s route was actually possible, but it simply entailed a young maiden’s hardships as she struggled to change her boyfriend to stop cheating on her with other women. While he still possessed a good temperament, and was really a gentleman, anyone out there with some self-respect wouldn’t stoop so low for a man.

Hence, Ramiel’s route was nicknamed ‘Cheating Boyfriend Simulator’.

Belladonna remembered how much her previous life had hated the route so much that her low blood pressure became normal, and even high at some point— and she can understand.

In the red-light district, where she had once lived, Ramiel is the kind of noble that she sees in dime a dozen, to the point Leah, her mother, had advised her never to trust a nobleman’s promises, especially if they were the eloquent kind.

Oh, the good ending for Ramiel’s route, with maximized affection points for him was to have him reformed from his womanizing ways. Anything less than a 100% on his affection points would cause him to still have his secret habit of looking at other women.

Still, that ending wasn’t worth the headache of actually sticking by this kind of hooligan.

Did my lady anger a god in her previous life, and now she’s paying the price?

Belladonna thought as she shook her head, Donatella was just too unfortunate, even her fiancé was scum. Then again, the young maid knew that her lady did nothing wrong, it’s just that the developers of that game had problems of their own that they poured out into the game’s creation.

Now, knowing that her lady will be meeting that wicked fiancé of hers soon had kicked the young maid’s determination to overdrive.

I have to nip this in the bud.

Belladonna thought to herself as she immersed herself in plans— how can she ensure that Donatella won’t like him? How can she ensure that her lady won’t walk towards the fate of a cheated on maiden?

Think, Belladonna, think!

Suddenly, the maid had an epiphany.

There is someone in this room who definitely wouldn’t want Donatella to be married to Ramiel, more than Belladonna.

Yes, how could she forget that?!

In Ramiel’s route, the person who had told Donatella to forget about her fiancé, to stop attending the academy altogether once Ramiel broke off their engagement in public, the only person that is so insufferable yet powerful enough for Belladonna to use as a shield to protect her lady—!

In an instant, the young maid looked up, towards the person sitting across from her lady as her lilac eyes glimmered in absolute glee, as if she had just found the solution to every single one of her life problems.

Yes, there was no mistaking it.

The best person to use as a shield towards Ramiel—

Yes. The one and only!

Villiars Brigandine!!
