Chapter One

McNeil Theophilus rushed out of his shed as soon as he spotted Magdalene. The lady whom he had promised to always love “Maggie is here Mum; I will be there as soon as she agrees to join us tonight” he said with a slobbery eye and ends the phone call. He stopped and let a beach car pass, the man bowed to Neil with a simple smile, “Good day Sir, Lady Theo said I should bring you over to the house. She said the wake keep begins in some minutes”. Jamie said as the vehicle comes to a halt.

Magdalene slows her pace as she sees who is in the automobile, she notices the way Neil was staring at Jamie. All three are familiar. She knows Jamie is the messenger Neil’s mum normally uses to come get him when there is something important to do at the house.

“I can’t believe Mum sent you over on a day like this Jamie. Why do you always act without even thinking about how it will make me feel” Neil stated with a frown. Maggie is already standing beside him now and waves her left hand to Jamie. A greasy smile spread across her face. “Hello Magdalene, you look super stunning as always” said Jamie, as he is coming down from the Ford Bronco. He takes his time to place his left foot on the sand. All the while holding the B-pillar for balance. His eyes are fixated on Maggie who tapped Neil on the back, “Don’t mind Neil, he is such a sad man” the two in the conversation laughed. Neil, keeps studying Jamie body movement.

The man now walking from the front of the car in their direction. Magdalene placed a palm on the back of Neil, “Relax a little bit, he is only doing his job” she whispered into his right ear. The heat from her had captured his senses in a way that makes his disposition change instantly. Neil has a flush on his face and looked away from Jamie whose phone is ringing now. Neil is staring directly in the face of his lady. The world seems like a long-forgotten trouble and would not care about the situation at hand. All he sees is an angel and just want to be here with her forever.

The phone continues ringing, Jamie is overtaken by the two people in front of him who might tear off their cloths without minding the public spectacle any minute now. His mouth opening wide, he recovered from the fear and swipe the screen, “Hello Pricilia, I am at the beach” he said loudly as if he needs to remind the pair about where they are. A soft high pitch voice echoes back through the phone “Wow, that’s, that is awesome. I am almost there too, see you soon” she said with an indication of excitement in her voice.

The phone call has indeed woken the two from whatever realm they had been in the last minute, they both looked at Jamie with a surprise face. Jamie whom they thought had come strictly at the directions of his boss seems to have other plans. He is laughing now. His round face glittering, “Sorry boss I have a date. I should have told you that before the other information” he is stroking his belly.

The three laughed after the words came out of Jamie’s mouth. Magdalene is shaking her head, “Oh I wish I had that on video. Jamie, you should be an actor” she said. Neil staggered away from her, “I mean, he should be on stage somewhere cracking people up instead of always coming out to ruin my day” he admonished. Neil managed to lean on the beach car. “Oh my gosh this is so funny; I think I will just go get some juice?” said Magdalene as she gestured to Neil to come along. “Let’s leave our stalker here to enjoy his date” she added.

Jamie raised his two hands, briefly. He placed his left arm on his chest and bowed to the two as they step to the right towards the fruit stands. The beach is parked this afternoon and there are fewer spots where traders are making sales as the place as been recently reorganized ahead of the rituals that will be held here for the late alpha, Theophilus Adkins. The park has blossomed under him and they have their estates all intact. Even though his ambition to purchase more waterside places in Malibu failed he was known as one of the most successful architects in the area.

“I am happy you made it babe” said Neil as he grabs the lady by the hands. The sand on his hands drops on hers and she looked instantly at his wrist, “What have you been doing?”, she asked with her face still on his hands. Neil quickly released her hands from his hold, “Oh I am sorry. I was building caves for a few hatchbacks under the shade where Yolanda…” he paused to look, his posture moving to face the shade he was under before Magdalene arrived. He is surprised, Yolanda had been the lady he was conversing with earlier who said he knows him and had been to their house once when dad was having his sixty ninth birthday earlier this year. She was working as usher. Now, she is walking beside Jamie, holding hands. To the right of Jamie is the lady whom, from the looks of it knows them both and must have been connected to Jamie through Yolanda. The lady he has a date with, Pricilia. “I never knew Yolanda is a match maker” said Neil, pointing his finger towards the shade.

Magdalene held him by the waist and lean on him from behind, her face touching his, “Don’t they all look cute together?” she said indifferently. “I guess. Jamie sure has more connections on my beach than me” “Damn it, jealous alpha. So I am not pretty enough cos you now see Jamie chilling with two hotties?” she asked in a resolution. Neil who held her hands in the front, “I swear there is no woman prettier than you baby” he pleaded. A smile splashed on the face of his lady who presses her palm on his abdomen, “I know. Let’s get the juice”.

Jamie is waving at them now, but the two have turned away, couldn’t see his gesture. “Jamie, they’ve turned away.” Said Yolanda so that Jamie could stop acting all connected at the moment. He stopped waving and looked at Pricilia, “My boss, he owns the place” “Wow, that’s interesting” said the young lady who held a large bottle of iced water, a straw wimped around by her right fingers. Yolanda stepped forward, “Guys, let me go get something. Enjoy” she stated as she walked away from the two. Not a word is said by either Jamie or Pricilia. They just stood and watch her jug in the direction of Neil and Magdalene.

At the fruit stand Magdalene already have her smoothy, she is sipping it while Jayz song; A week ago, is playing in the kiosk so that she is moving slowly to the flow. Neil is conversing with the seller, “How did you escape the drawdown Busty?” “Boss, ah, that’s your help Sir” he replied with a large pine apple in his left hand. He puts it in the smoothy maker. “Oh, how was I so nice that day?” wondered Neil, Busty nodded. He chose to let the machine stop grinding before making another statement. “You were getting a drink from here when the inspector came by so he just walked past me. See.” Said Busty with a grin. Neil face turned more alive, he is smiling too, “Hmm, yeah that day with Yol…” before he could finish Magdalene speaks, “Yolanda here you are”.

Yolanda is walking fast across the sand with her arms opened, “Neil already told you, my name?” she said with a surprise, her face is more toughened now because she thinks a proper introduction might never occur. Magdalene face stays tasteless, she has stopped moving to the music now.

Neil turned around, laughing.  A cheerfulness that hasn’t been there all afternoon. Magdalene brought out her sun glasses, walked into the open, “I guess I should have tanned more than I have already” she said with a frown now, threw away her smoothy cup and walked away from the stand before Yolanda could meet her there.

Magdalene removed the hat from her head, her long hair falling free over her shoulders, she is walking fast towards the woods that make up the end of the property. The wood extends into the highway where it serves as a fence before a short barb wire that extends to the entrance gates. Neil has started calling her name, “Can you just wait a minute. You don’t need this” he begged. Staring at the lady he is about to lose, how tall, and gorgeous she looks with her hair flying freely amidst the ocean breeze. He swallows hard and gnashed his teeth.

Having stepped on a rock, he lost his composure and fell down on the sand, “Ah” he shouted. Got up in the instant like nothing happened, the event had made Magdalene to stop. She just remembered her boyfriend is a werewolf. She is breathing heavily as she turns to face him, wondering; has he turned? is he with long claws to tear her apart? Her heart pounds and she is breathing heavily.

Neil in a speed she never imagined was humanly normal got to her, grabbed her by the waist, the scent of his cologne aligning with the forest stuffed Magdalene nostrils. She lost her breath and collapsed in his arms. Holding him very tight for air, he moved his right hand up her spine, her light green blouse felt like her skin in his touch, the weather is cooler than the open, a little flash of the sun heat his face up in a moment with the waves of leaves, the passion grows in him, he kissed her neck.

By the time he gets his lips off her skin, she had returned the same, with her face now on his chest, Magdalene is breathing again in a soft way, she exhales on his skin. Neil is aroused, his heart is beathing loud now. He moved the right hand away from her behind, placed it on her chest, without a care of any eyes watching, he kissed her deeply, sulking her lower lips. Then a dried fruit fell from a tree beside them, making a noise. She pushed him away.

Neil stood there and, in his heart, must have sent a curse to the tree, his gentle face had turned sour. “I love you Magdalene, you are so perfect. I need you” he is pleading again. She said nothing. Kicking one of thousands of dried fruits that spreads across the floor. Neil studying her silence, he continued, “Yolanda was getting a smoothy that day, I was also there and we didn’t even say a thing throughout because I was very preoccupied and only remembered the events when that sick Busty mentioned it again just now”.

“Okay, I don’t care about all that anyway” giggled Magdalene.

“What I want to know is, where are we headed?” she asked

“Let’s go to the vigil and we can talk after please. Mum probably coming to get me herself” said Neil hastily.

“I’m talking about us, when are we getting serious” she asked while folding her arms with her face fixed on the man before her. He said nothing. She began walking back to the beach as his phone starts ringing. “Pick it up, and greet her for me” said Magdalene, knowing its Neil’s mum who is most likely the caller. Neil knows he can’t convince her about the vigil anymore, picks the call with his head low, “I am almost home mum”.
