Chapter 2: Encounter With The Unknown

Chapter 2: Encounter With The Unknown

In a convenience store, Shin could be seen washing himself wiping away all the blood in his hands.

Afterwards, he proceeded packing foods and clothes in a camping backpack which he found from a dead person. Also, he was now carrying a metal bat which he got at the convenience store.

After killing someone, and seeing a murder scene right in front of him. His views of the world currently changed. He was a person who was quick to adapt to situations, but if not for the fact that he experienced such a scene, he would not change as fast.

With a resolute expression Shin then said "Guns... I need guns."

Fully packed with foods, he went out to look for guns. Before looking for any survivors, he thought that having a way to protect himself first would be the best option.

Quickly, he went to the nearest police station. There, he found a 0.38 special revolver strapped at a body of a dead cop.

Inside, he found more guns which he quickly grabbed. However, they were all the same special revolver. He didn't expected any guns with higher fire power since in japan, guns weren't really used much by the police, and instead, they relied on martial arts to subdue criminals.

With three 0.38 special revolver and some ammunition, he felt safer while he walked in the streets attempting to look for any survivors.

After walking around 1 kilometer, he saw a weird looking creature which as as big as a dog feeding on a dead body. It has eight legs which made it look like a giant red insect. The sight was horrifying for someone like Shin. His first thought was that it might be an alien from the planets which crashed into earth.

Not even daring to observe it more, he pulled out his 0.38 special revolver and fired at the creature continuously. It was his first time firing a gun, so some shots missed, but at such a close distance, he was sure some hit the creature. However, for some unknown reason, the bullets failed to severely damage it. It was as if the bullets which hit its body was simply absorbed.

His eyes went wide with fear as he backed off. "Shit.. Seems like bullet's doesn't work."

Without hesitation, he quickly ran away. But, the monster was enraged by his attack, and it quickly pounced towards him. It was fast; faster than normal humans by two times. Only in a few seconds, it quickly caught up with Shin and was almost upon him.

Since the creature was in front of him, Shin held the bat behind him and forcefully hit the creature with it. Strangely, the monster was affected and it was thrown away two meters away after which it wailed in pain. In its side, he suddenly noticed that it had two knives already stabbed in it, disabling its ability to move faster.

When Ming Li noticed this, he proceeded attacking the monster, hitting it more with his metal bat. He was like a madman not stopping even if the back of the creature was already completely smashed and blood flowed out of it.

After a minute of nonstop pounding, he regained his senses and stared at the dead creature in front of him. Suddenly, his surroundings seemed to have a floating motes of blue light in it. His body also felt slightly stronger and his breathing stabilized.

"What is this?"

With curiosity, he tried to touch the motes of light, but it simply moved away form his hands. He then glanced back at the dead creature and studied it for a bit. He realized that it was already severely injured before it met him.

With all the corpses around, he concluded that the creature might have been already attacked these humans and got injured in the process.

Remembering all of those anime and manga he read, he though of a weird idea. He pulled out his knife and started dissecting the creature.

He started with its head, where he found a plain red pill. When he touched the pill, information flowed in his mind.

'Low class skill: Absolute defense - Toughens the skin to withstood attacks. Lasts for five minutes.

Mana consumption: 30'

When the information entered his head, he was filled with shock. He even double checked the pill to see if the same information will come to him.

Also, for some reason, his instincts tells him that the pill he was holding can make him stronger.

"Did the world turn into some sort of game?"

He then observed the motes of light in his surroundings.

"Mana.. Is this blue light mana?"

With a bit of hesitation, he slowly placed the pill in his mouth and swallowed it. A weird glow appeared in his body and quickly dissipated.

In his mind an information appeared saying that he learned the skill Absolute Defense.

He was filled with excitement as he checked his body for any abnormalities, but for some reason he even feel better.

Full of excitement, he quickly tried to activate absolute defense and even shouting out its name. Unfortunately nothing happened. An information only appeared on his thoughts.

'Not Enough Mana.'

"So how do I get mana?" While holding his chin he thought deeply.

But suddenly, another creature came crawling towards him at a distance. This time, the creature was somewhat smaller and has lesser legs. It also looked weaker and less intimidating.

Since he knew that this things give off skills, Shin quickly grabbed his bat and gun then began firing at the creature.

Same as before, the bullets did not do any damage and simply got absorbed by it.

"So its really useless on it."

With resolve he attacked the creature using his metal bat. Strangely, even though it looks less intimidating, it moved faster than the first creature.

It quickly came near Shin while screeching loudly. It tried to wound his leg but Shin quickly dodged it.

With the advantage of having a longer weapon, he started pounding at the creature dealing severe damage.

After a while, it died, after which, the motes of light came towards his body and revitalized him.

When the light subsided, an information flowed through his mind making informing him that he have gained a level and an orb appeared in his thoughts.

When he focused on that orb, information flowed to him again.

Level 1 : Special Title: "Lucky One"

Strength : 10

Vitality : 10

Agility : 10

Spirit : 10

luck : 20

Mana : 100

Unused stat points: 2

Special Skill: Luck!!!

Skills: Absolute Defense.

"Lucky One?" Why do I have that title.

This time, Shin was really shocked. He analyzed the situation and quickly dissected the new creature he killed.

However, this time, he failed to find any pill inside of it.

"If reality really did turn into some sort of game, then I guess there are only chances to gain a drop or something."

With that, he remembered his skill, then quickly activated it simply by thought. He realized how stupid he was to even shout for it to activate.

His skin started to feel tougher and harder, but still, he could move as nimble as always.

Testing his skill, he punched the wall as hard as he can, but instead of feeling pain, he felt joy, since he felt nothing from the punch. It was as if he was completely numb and no wound appeared on his fist.

Then next, he examined his special skill, Luck!!!, it does not state any useful information in it other than, It can only be used twice every day, and effect will last for an hour.

So instead, he tried to use the special skill Luck!!!. The skill does not have a mana cost so he did not hesitate to use it. This time an information suddenly appeared in his head.

'Str +10 for 3 hours.'

his eyes went wide wide when he saw this. he also felt his body to become stronger and felt that one punch could possibly severely harm someone.

Quickly, he proceeded forward trying to look for more of those creatures so he could proceed leveling up.

Shin was the type of person to find opportunities instead of waiting for it. Just like the way he gambled to quickly get rich, this time, he was also willing to face the danger just to advance forward.

He wasn't stupid not to realize that some other people might be getting stronger than him. With his competitive nature, he would want to seize the opportunity and become the strongest as soon as possible.

But, his excitement slowly faded as he find it more terrifying to walk on the streets. More and more of those creatures moved in group and they where everywhere.

After walking for several hours, he only encountered some creatures who moved alone, which he killed easier than before. The strength of his strikes seemed to have doubled and he does not have to worry about getting injured since his skin was tougher from the use of Absolute Defense.

When some time passed, he killed a total of five which made him go up to level 2. This time, he was informed that he has additional 2 unused stat point creating a total of 4.

Unsure of what to do with it, he ignored it for now and proceeded hunting. He was a bit careful avoiding to encounter stronger creatures. He knew that since he was leveling up, there might be a high chance that strong creatures could appear out of nowhere.

At a small bridge not far away, he saw a three students crossing the bridge. The two girls were following closely behind a man who was carrying a steel pipe. It seemed like they encountered a bit of trouble themselves which caused them to walk with caution.

When the students caught sight of Shin, their expression all turned serious as the man in front suddenly shouted. "Sir, are you with someone?"

Shin immediately answered. "No. I am alone, and looking for survivors."

When the three heard this, they all looked at each other and nodded. Quickly, the man replied. "Sir, do you have any food?"

Having heard the words of the student, he realized that it has already been some time since the catastrophe happened, and it was getting late. So people who failed to gather food would eventually fear of not being able to find some before it gets late.

Shin pulled out some food in his backpack and showed it to the students. "Yes. I have some. I think I can share some with you guys if you need it."

The students then whispered at each other, then decided to proceed towards Shin.

"Sir, my name is Hideki Hino, I am second year high school. The two girls behind me are Kaori Harada and Honoka Fujita who are my juniors at first year of High School."

At a glance, Shin noticed that Hideki seemed to be a guy who is a role model student and the type to be elected as class president. Also, as for the two girls, both were noticeably pretty. Kaori looked a bit timid and frail which matches her pretty face. But, Honoka somewhat seemed a bit reliable and had a finer figure.

"Have you encountered those weird insect looking creatures roaming around?" Shin asked.

The three all nodded simultaneously and Hideki said. "Do you know what are those creatures? We have encountered some, but luckily we were able to escape. We even saw it killing people."

"So they haven't killed one yet. Which means they're still normal humans without level." Shin thought.

"Since its getting late, how about we look for a place to stay first."

All simply nodded and they all proceeded to an empty, half intact home nearby. Quickly, they checked if there was anyone alive inside. Upon ensuring that the place is empty and safe, they all locked the doors and windows, then piled up a sofa and other heavy furniture in front of it, to prevent anyone from entering.

After all the work, all of them sat on a table where Shin gave them food. Most of it were canned goods. They also found some canned goods in the house so everyone felt relived.

They have no idea how many of those creatures were outside, only Shin knew that there were tons of them which could endanger anyone if one is not careful.

Shin did not talk about it to avoid scaring everyone. He simply silently ate and avoided any conversation about the creatures. In front of him were people younger than him, and were obviously terrified of everything happening.

Soon, the girls went to sleep as Shin and Hideki stayed on guard for some time. Shin and Hideki decided to do shifts while guarding, but since it was still early, Hideki stayed beside Shin to talk a bit more.

"Shin, have you seen all the corpse outside and all the destruction? Do you think there is still a government out there trying to clean up this mess?"

Shin did not answer for a while then sighed.

"I think there are still groups trying to organize survivors which I am hoping to find, but I am not sure if they are the government."

Hideki then trembled and said. "I saw a lot of people die, I even met thugs who killed each other. Luckily I was able to flee and met those two along the way."

"Shin... I think we cannot survive long enough in this world."

Shin stared at Hideki with a complex expression and wans't sure what to say when Hideki continued. "Before I die, I think I wish to have fun. How about it Shin, let us split these two girls between us? They are both pretty, so you can pick first. In here they have no choice but to let us do what we want, and they can't even fight back against two guys."

Shin's eyes went wide when he heard Hideki's words. He never thought that someone who looked like a role model student would say something extremely crazy.

It was not that he didn't find the two girls pretty, but raping them didn't even came to mind. He was not like Hideki who lost hope, in fact after leveling up, he became excited to venture more. But with tons of those creatures walking around, he could not easily do so. So he needed to find companions to help him fight.

He only decided to stick with Hideki's groups since Hideki seemed to be quite fit and could probably fight it off with those creatures. But he was wrong. Hideki already lost it, and was at the verge of mental collapse.

Shin understood that it was normal for someone to feel like that so he was unable to say a word.

Only after a while he said. "Do what you want. Tomorrow I will leave. I will not interfere with any of your affairs. You three originally knew each other and I am simply tagging along. I cannot judge you in any way."

He realized that in this current world, the most important thing was to survive. Last time he tried to save someone it ended up in a disaster. He also wasn't a righteous person, and also did his fare share of evil deeds back then to achieve his goal, so he decided to simply ignore everything and focus on his own affairs.
