Chapter 1

“…is a data structure built on top of an array that follows a first in first out…” The professor drones on and on. Matt - usually a diligent student - cannot make sense of the words. His vision blurring as he absentmindedly stares at his blank page of notes. I really want out of this room…

A few seats away, a pale student with flowing dark brown hair raises her hand, which feels oddly heavy. “Regarding… last weeks homework, coueed th-” her face twitches and the words slurring as she falls unconscious.

Stirring from her unprompted nap, Sophie grimaces as the bright morning sun stings her eyes. She groans and raises an arm to block the glare. Huh… wasn’t I in class… She clambers to her feet, her clothes - a plain white shirt and rough, worn, charcoal gray pants, a stark contrast to the colourful outfit she chose this morning - damp from lying on the dewy grass. Spooked by the sudden change in scenery, her gaze darts around the unfamiliar landscape, her long hair blowing in the wind.

Sophie feels a shiver run down her spine as finds herself in a small grassy clearing surrounded by long, thin, ash-gray coloured trees. The branches creak loudly as the wind whistles through them, the only sound that can be heard. A thick white fog only adds to her unease.

“Um… you are Sophie aren’t you?” A hesitant, confused voice calls out from behind her. Startled, she spins around, her fists clenched and heart pounding, ready to face this unknown kidnapper. She pauses as her gaze settles on the figure awkwardly standing nearby. Huh, I know him… Jack, right? What’s he doing here? She glances at the pale trees behind him, their branches swaying ominously. On second thought, what am I doing here? “I’m Matt, we’re in the same class.” He offers helpfully, as if reading her mind.

“I just woke up here a minute ago, I don’t know what this place is. Do you know?” He doesn’t wait for a response before resuming his questioning “Do you know how we got here? Do you know anything?” What am I even saying, of course she doesn’t, I saw her wake up after me “Sorry, I’m a bit nervous, I guess you probably don’t know anything either.” With an uneasy look on his face, he continues, “This sure is creepy though.”

Sophie, who is beginning to recover from her shock, replies “No, no I don’t know anything… I was in a lecture and just fell asleep.” She shivers, partly from coldness, partly from nerves. “This place is a bit scary, huh?”

He shifts on his feet, and gives a nervous smile. “This might sound a bit crazy but…” Hesitating for a moment, he sheepishly continues “Do you watch anime? It’s kind of giving me isekai vibes.” Sophie blinks, before responding “Isn’t this”, she gestures around, “a bit eerie for an isekai? And isn’t there stuff like status-”

Her words are left hanging, as her face forms into one of disbelief. A stream of words and symbols written in a completely unknown, though strangely comprehensible, language flash through her mind.

Sophie (Human) | LVL: 1 (0 / 10 EXP)

HP: 110/110 | MP: 114/114 | STM: 115/115

STR: 10 | AGI: 16 | VIT: 10 | END: 15 | INT: 14

Skills: Efficient Body (D), Weapon Mastery: Sword (B-)

Status screens? Then an isekai might not be that far-fetched. “Um, okay…” She murmurs ”maybe you are onto something…” Matt’s eyes widen and his heart starts to race. “You think so? Really?” he quickly questions.

Sophie slowly nods, then with her hand on her temple, she tentatively asks “Can you try saying status?”
