We grow up being told that we’re special. That we can do anything we put our minds and hearts to. That we matter. And when we try to do something new? It’s wrong. We are wrong. How could we be so stupid? Failure. Loser. Good for nothing. How could we, after everything our parents did for us? We get lifted up, then pushed right back down over and over and over again. Like we’re in a massive washing machine on spin cycle. We become traumatized. We become broken. After being told how amazing we are, we no longer believe it. It’s been ingrained by actions instead of just words how impotent we really are in life.
When we’ve hit the lowest we can get, the world around us is shocked by how depressed we are. “But you used to be such a bright child!” they cry, as if they didn’t used to belittle us for every minor imperfection they caused in us. We drift away, and coast by in life instead of reaching the pinnacle we were once told belonged to us. In order to cope with all the bullshit, we turn to books, to video games, to movies. Escapism. We do our best to forget the crap around us and delve into other worlds that exist only in our heads.
Then, we move on. We go to school. We go to work. We go home. We live, eat, sleep, shit and then we die. That’s our entire stories. Hopeful beginnings, then mediocrity. Some of us have children then, and the cycle begins anew. Another wave of suffering, another generation ruined by the traumas of the past. Except, that’s not how every story ends. Sometimes, people get a chance to do something different. Opportunity strikes, and they become something more. Usually, this happens because their family had money already. CEOs make CEOs, burnt out gifted children make burnt out gifted children. Rarely, a different kind of opportunity strikes.
That kind of opportunity faced Alex today. A portal stood in front of the 32 year old janitor. He reached up his left hand and wiped it through his sweaty, thinning brown hair, a deep thoughtful frown on his face. He stared at the flickering red portal, and realized he had to make a decision. He knew, deep in his heart, this portal was not for him. He was just a janitor at the local high school. He watched enough anime that he knew this had to be for a student, but he had stumbled upon it instead. Did he enter the portal, or did he ignore it and let some brat have a chance at a greater destiny? Alex dropped the broom in his right hand and walked inside the portal. He never once looked back.
Most opportunities in our lives come at an early age. As we get older and older, life seems to pass us by. So when life drops an opportunity like this on you, you better not pass it up. Alex opened his eyes to find he was in a forest. His uniform felt sweaty in the humid heat in his new surroundings. The jacket and pants were designed to keep him warm in the AC filled school. He unzipped his jacket revealing a black t shirt covering his pouchy stomach. In front of him, was a blue screen.

Upon blikning, the menu vanished. As far as the eye could see, there were only tree and grass. Alex could hear birds chirping, and bugs screaming, but he saw no signs of intelligent life. Taking a deep shuddering breath, the not so young man could only think, ‘Well, I always wanted to go camping.’ He always felt like a loser, but a man with a system of his own could only grow. He could change here, right? Anything was better than the monotony his life had become. Even death.
