The living dead
The changing room

The changing room

I slowly opened the door, checking both sides before creeping out. The dead students were just sitting there, making no moves. I snuck to the other end of the hall then motioned for everyone to come out.

I was surprised at what they looked like. One of them was a beautiful chocolate skinned girl, looking to be only 16 or 17. She had wavy brown hair with beautiful bright blue eyes that seemed to shine more than the ocean itself. She had a cute pair of glasses resting on her nose, increasing the effect of her blue eyes.

The male- Who was called chubby- was a round little thing. Despite his overweightness he wasn’t ugly. No, contrary to that fact it suited him like a… yeah, like a panda. Chubby cheeks with brown eyes and a moppy head of hair that looked like he showered in grease showed he wasn’t a fighter.

The third female however, was completely different from the two. While the first two were both american, she was japanese. She had fierce eyes like an eagle going for it’s kill. Oddly colored green hair and red eyes made her look like one evil christmas head.

The little girl- who oddly never told her name- was right behind me, hand on my shirt. Her fox named Rosco was crouched between my legs, lips raised in a snarl at the dead students who stood stock still.

I slowly walked towards the stairs then motioned them closer. We walked like this without incident to the second floor. I peeked around the corner and saw a group of students standing by the door to the locker room, making small groans and noises.

“Son of a bitch!” I thought as I walked back up towards the stair midsection.

“Students are crowding the door. Normally I would throw something but I’m all out of things to throw.”

I stupidly left the deodorants back in the room. There were only two and they were always threatening to fall out of my pockets so I labeled them as a liability. Now I am seriously regretting that.

“Why don’t we just go to the front entrance?” Dora asked. I knew it was her because she had the same voice as voice number one.

“Too much of a risk. I’m guessing a lot of people tried to do the same thing. Those that didn’t die screaming a terrible death still died, creating more undead students.” It was true. Even while I was walking up the stairs I could hear the screams of pain as people had their life taken away from them.

“We’re just gonna have to go the long way around. Though, I would prefer to fight the dead things my bow is in the girls locker-room.

“Zombies. They are zombies!” Kenji suddenly shouted/whispered.

“Are you stupid or are you stupid? Zombies aren’t real Kenji” Sabrina said, giving him an idiot glare.

“Then tell me. Are these… things are any different from them!” He shouted back. Sabrina didn't back down but neither did she refute his claim. Now that I think about it they really are like zombies.

“Let’s go. Remember, nobody make a sound. If you die, don’t drag us down with you. I’ll go first”

I slowly went back down the steps, making sure not to make any noise on the way down. I turned around the stairs corner and froze. Why? Because right in front of me was the headmaster, left arm nearly completely gone with his neck half ripped out and eyeballs completely gone. I didn’t even breath as he stood in front of me, those blank sockets seemingly staring right at me. I slowly moved to the left, taking extra care not to make any sound. I was saddened about what the little girl was going to do when she saw her father like that, but my top priority was my own survival. If something happens to someone I don’t even know then… life sucks.

I slowly walked down the hall, avoiding every zombie I came across. Our plan was every five minutes another person would come down the steps, giving a slow but steady rate of people. I breathed a sigh of relief as I stood in front of the gym doors.

Now for the hard part. I turned to my right to see Kenji crawling along the floor, his fat hands flopping against it. I cracked a small smile at that. I grabbed the handle of the gym door and opened it, praying that the handles were oiled. My prayers were answered as the doors opened smoothly, making no noise as I pulled it open. However, in the next second they crushed.

At least two hundred zombies stood there, all having massive injuries to their bodys. I couldn’t see a pathway through.

“Hieeheheh!” Kenji screeched in a whisper, his breathing erratic. “There's no way… its impossible!! We should just go back and wait for help!” Before I could even answer he began to walk away, not wanting to listen. I grabbed him by his collar and pulled him back, whispering

“ It’s too late to pull back and once again, nobody will help us. Who do you think will come? The police? They are probably busy outside!” His face turned white as a sheet when I said that. He must not have thought that this situation could happen elsewhere. How stupid.

“Do… do you really think they are outside as well??”

“Of course. It’s just a guess, but I think this thing may have started from the outside.”

“What! Then our families!!!...”

“They are in danger dumbass” Sabrina said, making kenji jump in the air.

“Then we need to hurry!” He whispered loudly.

“Yea we do. Why ain’t you idiots inside yet?” Sabrina asked, a questioning look in her eyes.

“See for yourself.” I told her, opening the door. She peeked her head inside then whipped it back out, a look of controlled fear on her face.

“Yep. And unless someone fancy’s being bait, there is almost no way to get through”

“Almost?” Kenji questioned

“Well I mean if someone was stupid enough to climb onto the track then navigate through the steel beams then possibly…” Both of them stared straight at me, and I for sure as hell knew what that look meant.

“Oh no no no no. I’m not that stupid”

-------------

Son of a bitch.

I was currently on top of the beam. Why? Because after arguing with Kenji and Sabrina for a good ten minutes, during the time the rest of the group came over (The zombies had heard screams down the hallway, causing most of them to leave) they somehow managed to convince me into doing it. Our plan was that I would go down to the locker room then grab Sabrina’s bow. After that I would go into the janitors closet then see if anyone else was in the locker room. If there were, they could help us out. I realized this plan relied massively on luck. Problem is, we really don’t have another choice. If we all went to the other side of the gym there was far too much of a risk of getting spotted by zombies. The others were hiding in a bathroom I had “Emptied”. They would wait in there until I came back.

With time, I could take out all the zombies in the gym. There weren’t that many zombies, but the problem is I didn’t know how much time we had. For all I knew zombies could be moving around now, led by some screaming kid.

Getting onto the track was easy, since there wasn’t that many zombies on top, only just a couple. The hardest part was getting on top of the beam. I was forced to tip toe on top of a window, my toes strained with effort. I launched myself off the small space and just barely managed to grab the stone ledge. After that I had to jump off the ledge and grab the beam, something I did with a few problems. My hand made far too much noise when I grabbed the metal, causing more than a few zombies to look up at me.

I slowly walked across, making sure to look before I step. Unfortunately, I should have been looking up as I smacked my head against a steel bar, causing me to lose my balance. I just managed to reach out with my fingers and grab the beam, straining the tips with effort. I quickly righted myself back up then walked to the other side.

When I made it to the other side I jumped to the ledge, rolling as I stopped myself. Now this was the other problem I encountered. The jump down was about nine feet. For a normal person that may hurt, but I’m not normal. There was no window like the other side to jump down on, so I simply jumped at an angle. When my feet hit the ground I went into a perfect roll, shaking off the shock with a stretch.

After dodging a few zombies I positioned myself over the girl’s bathroom. There were shockingly few zombies by the locker room.

“Most of them are probably inside” I thought to myself as I jumped over the guard bar.I took out both my sword in mid air and smashed them on top of two zombies heads, watching as their skulls caved in with the force of my blow. There were two more left so I did a quick spin and smashed both of their throats. Even so they didn’t die. They just limped towards me with their broken necks, eyes showing no emotion as they tried to kill me. I gave them a quick blow to the head then walked towards the door.

I slowly grabbed the handle of the door, waiting for something to leap out at me. When nothing did I pulled the door open and followed it to the side, just to be extra careful. Instantly a spear went past the door. I gulped. If I was there, I may have just been stabbed.

“I come in peace!” I whispered, not knowing if they could hear me.

“Are you bitten?” A voice replied after a few seconds.

“Not at all.”

“Can you show proof”

“I’m not moaning around trying to bite off your flesh and I have enough intelligence to speak” I said with a smile. I heard light laughter behind the door before I saw a hand appear past the door, waving me inside. I snuck inside to see seven girls all armed with spears. Well, truth be told they weren’t spears, just sharpened sticks.

“Who are you?” A dark haired girl asked, eyes scanning me for bite marks.

“Akagi Retska at your service.”

“You don’t go to this school” Another woman said. This one had bright blonde hair and blue eyes. She was older, a senior if not a teacher.

“I don’t”

“Then why are you here?”

“Help some people I met on the way. So if you will just move?...” I started to move forward but one of them took that as a sign of aggression. She lunged at my body with her spear, eyes full of fear. I easily brushed it aside then closed the gap in an instant. I still had my kendo swords in my hand so I rammed the end of it into her stomach, causing spittle and a choked gasp to come out.

“Sarah!” One of them yelled, Another spear came at me but I just grabbed the handle and ripped it out of the girls hand. I planned breaking it but out of the corner of my eye a spear came thrusting for my throat. I just barely managed to lean backwards, feeling the breeze carried with the force of the thrust. I grabbed the spear by it’s handle but before I could do a thing it was viciously spun, causing it to be wretched out of my hand. Instinct took over as I dodged three more thrusts from a pretty blue haired woman. On the fourth thrust I smacked the spear away with my blade then rushed at her. She was perfectly prepared and tried to trip my feet with her spear.

With anyone else that tactic would have been perfect. Unfortunately I’m not just anyone. When the spear was shot between my feet I smashed my sword down, breaking the tough wooden stick with but a slice. I closed the gap between us and struck her in the ribs, hearing a satisfying crunch as she gasped in pain. Before she could get away I was behind her with my sword at her throat. Not that a wooden bokken could cut or anything but they got the message.

“Give Alla back!” One of them screamed. It started a loud yelled match aimed at me before I screamed

“SHUTTHE FUCK UP!” The room quieted instantly, the ragged breaths of the girl named Alla the only sound in the room.

“...Why are you doing this? We haven’t done anything to you!?” The older woman cried, tears in her eyes.

“Excuse me? You attacked out of the blue and tried to kill me. Then, when I simply knocked down the perpetrator you attacked me again? And you believe you didn’t do anything? Open your eyes.” They didn’t have anything to say to that, just looked to the side with their eyes downcast.

“But I’m willing to make a compromise with you people” I said, giving them a chance. The teacher looked up and stared me in the eyes, as if not believing her luck. Seriously, do they think me a monster?

“What is it! We will do it, just don’t hurt Alla!”

“Kill every zombie out there. Do that, and Alla will be unharmed. Heck, I’ll even let her fight with you.” They huddled up together, forming a plan. After a few moments they asked

“Why do you need them cleared out?”

“Some people I met earlier helped me out in a tight spot. They told me how to escape this place and to do that they need to come through here.” I told them, not giving them any other information. They asked a few more questions, trying to pry the info out of me but to no avail.

“We will do it… just release Alla.” I did as she said and let her go, smiling as she gave me one more dirty glare.

“Good, you have five minutes before we start!”

-----------

Dora’s pov.

I shivered in fear as I crawled past the zombies, fighting against every instinct that told me to run. I nearly jumped out of my skin when the furry little fox named Rosco brushed past me, walking on ahead. The little girl, whose name was Alicia had her eyes closed and was holding onto my hoodie as she crawled behind me. She was too scared to open her eyes and see them this close.

After a brutal five minutes of crawling I finally arrived at the gym doors to hear Akagai, Kenji and Sabrina in the middle of an argument.

“-nly one that can do it!” Sabrina said, giving him a stern glare.

“No no no! You're definitely fit enough to do that”

“Yea my arms and back are but I can’t jump! I rarely, if ever, train my legs! Only for running and catching up to my prey do I train them.” A few more minutes of bickering Akagi finally agreed to do it, dragging us to the bathroom and killed the two zombies that were inside. After getting our word that we would stay until he left leaving us alone with only the blue stalls as comfort.

“Ho...how do you think this started?” I asked, wanting to start a conversation.

“Government conspiracy! They created these things to wipe down the population!” Kenji said, his eyes full of hatred.

“Hate to spoil your theory shithead (not) but I highly doubt that the government created zombies. After all, what would happen if the zombies turned on them?” Sabrina asked.

“That’s the thing! They are staying underground in secret bunkers, waiting for the population to be diminished.”

“What’s the population have to do with anything?” I asked, not understanding.

“Right now earth houses about eight billion people. The earth at max was only meant to hold three billion people. Sooner or later we will start to run out of food. Grains and vegetable prices will continue to rise, a single seed being 20 dollars. The rainforest’s will be cut down to house the growing population. This is the dirty way the government thought to get rid of us!” I was shocked. You could certainly look at it from that angle and even sympathize with it. However, there was still a small flaw.

“How will they kill the zombies after the population has been diminished? If we get the population down to three billion, that’s five billion zombies to fight!”

“Come on, that’s easy. The X.X has focused so much money in self defense that it definitely has the ability to wipe out a few billion people. I am completely confident in that.”

“Well what about…” I was at a loss for words. His logic made sense, but as a doctor myself I absolutely refused to believe someone would hurt billions of people like this. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not naive and know people willingly hurt other people, but I refuse to believe people that are supposed to help us would hurt us like this!

“Enough already. I don’t want to hear your bullshit theories. The truth of the matter is right now the only person who can save us is that Akagi kid. Our lives are in his hands!” Sabrina exclaimed. After a few moments Kenji asked

“Do.. do you think he will save us?” The question hung in the air before I said

“Why wouldn’t he?”

“Well he could just abandon us. Go into the girls locker room then into the basement.. There isn’t really any reason to save people he just met…” Silence descended upon the room. It was true. Between achieving freedom with a small bit of guilt or coming back into this hell hole with your life at stake which prospect sounds better?
