Jack Hoston, average blond looking Mathematics student of 27, was walking home on a nice sunny afternoon. It was for him a simple day from a nice week of his normal life.
Yet as he approached his home, on a less populated part of the city, he saw a strange redhead woman dressed in blue mumbling to herself.
" … same as ever …. no witnesses …. sional truck …. at least 3 trials …. last free chance, you can do it ! "
As Jack passed by her, she pressed on a strange device and began to cross the street. Our walking witness suddendly saw a truck coming full speed directly on the redhead path and by reflex, the blond man runned to her and pushed her of the way and closed his eyes for the last half-second before the impact.
As the blue dresse woman assisted to this accident, she supplicated in a lamenting voice as the truck seemingly disapeared like it never was there.
" Noooooooooooooooo !! This was my only free ticket !!! My dimensionnal truck !!!!! Why didn’t I look out for witnesses ??!! I knew I was forgetting something !!! Bloody wannabe hero !!!"

Jack waited 2 more seconds before oppening his eyes, at first surprised by absence of the impact and then completely flabbergasted by the fact that he wasn’t in the streets anymore. In fact he didn’t knew where he was at all.

He seemed to be in a 80m² room with white walls, blue carpet with little yellow stars. The room didn’t ha any door, window or even lamp, but still was lighten up. And then he saw a white marble pillar. On the pillar was a golden plaque with the word “memento” on it.
Jack was at loss, then it settled in his mind. I died.
The blond man had no idea how long he sat down on the ground, sometimes crying, sometimes laughing, or even just staring ahead lost in his thoughts, reliving some memories of a life that was no more.
His life was an ordinary one, nothing world - or even city - changing, it was a simple one. But to our former Math student, it was a fufilling one, he was content of the life he had. Good parents, some friends, not a lot mind you but, good ones. No girlfirend really, but he wasn’t really seeking one either, so no regrets. He then remembered his 25th birthday, at his parents house with each and every one of his friends coming for him. Definitively the best day of his life.
Then suddendly, the white pillar began to shine, brighter and brighter until Jack couldn’t see anything anymore and then it stopped. Opening his eyes he then saw a leather watch, very simple in design, standing atop the pillar. The blond recognised it immediately as the watch he received from his parents on the very day he just though about, his 25th birthday.
When Jack stood up and touched the watch trying to take it, he learned 2 things. First the watch wouldn’t budge, and second, while touching it a flood of every emotion and memories of this past life came to him. He then looked at the plaque again and saw that the text changed.
‘Memento
Jack Houston
Earth 1991-1918’
Jack cried, it was a good memento of his life, one object, but lots of memories and emotion. That way he would never forget.
Then ha saw it, a door appeared on the spotless wall, and he understood that it was time to go. He didn’t know where or if he will still be himself, but with his memento he was in peace and sure that he would one day come back in this very room, and that he could remember.
So he opened the door, looked at what seemed like a black veil and took a step forward.
