Chapter 2

"-ster! Wake up, young master!" The yelling pulled me from my sleep and caused me to jerk my head up in alarm. "You fell sleep! And not even after getting much done either."

"Huh wha?" I sat there, still asleep and not registering what was happening.

"Only 10 pages...Hmm...We're going to have to teach you how to do this more efficiently."

"I never said I was good at signing documents."

"What disappoints me more is that you clearly didn't read them, and none of the signatures are in the right spot."

"Why should I care?"

"Because one of these was a warrant for your loss of this estate!"

"Again, why should I care?" I thought this place was pretty nice but like, I didn't have any attachment to it. Why should I? I only got here today...I think.

"You really don't know how you got here. Hmm.. How did we manage to wind up with you.." They muttered under their breath. They turned and looked me in the eyes. "Today, you will be shown around, and we will explain the history of this estate. What's the last thing you remember before you woke up in that bed?"

"I remember walking across the water into the sun, on a bridge of light. Then I remember falling, and that's where it ends." I explained simply.

They seemed to ponder this for several moments. I took this time to actually focus on who they were. I then realized it was the old fox man who brought me here earlier.

"What day is it?" I asked, wondering how long I'd really been here.

"The second day of Turim. Why do you ask?" He replied without hesitation.

"No no, what day, like, month and day, maybe year?"

"The second day of Turim in the year of the Lotus." He replied, confident in his answer.

I then realized that they probably use a different calendar and have a different cycle, considering there were humanoid foxes who could speak. This would be a fun time.

"Okay...how many days have I been here?"

"I'd say it's been a few days since you fell from the sky now."

That sounded about right. At least it hadn't been weeks, I had a few more days to get back home before people started really freaking out about me. "Is there any way I can get back to my house? Like, on Earth?"

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.

"No."

"Are you serious?!"

"Yes, we've never had any masters wish to go back."

"Then I'll be the first to force you...fox people to find a way to send me back."

"Are you sure about that? You have everything here. Money, good food, a gorgeous house, servants. What more could you want?"

"My videogames, and my old job." I answered, grumpily.

"Video...games?" He cocked his head to the side, confused. "I'm sorry, but I have never heard of those. What might they be?"

"It's...too complicated to explain. Whatever. Just find a way to get me back there. This place, as beautiful as it is, is unnerving."

He looked genuinely concerned as I rejected their hospitality. To be frank, I didn't like it here. Don't get me wrong, the place was beautiful and they had been great to me. I just didn't like doing work. I enjoyed videogames, and it seemed like I wouldn't be able to play them here. Bummer.

Cuprum sighed heavily after a moment before turning and stalking out the door. "Dinner is in an hour, I suggest you go back to your room and get something a little more...formal on in the mean time." He stated, not even turning to look behind him. I was left alone with a stack of untouched papers on a desk. I didn't even know where my room was, let along what was considered formal here. Hopefully it wasn't much different. I liked the thought of dinner though. The food here was good.

I decided I might as well try and find my room. I walked back into the seemingly endless hallway, trying to remember which way I'd come from. I went to the left, barely remembering he'd led me to the right into the room when we'd first entered.

I walked through the long corridor, again appreciating the beauty of this place. The windows still seemed opaque to me, though they were certainly dimmer and showed signs of the sun setting. 'I guess I did end up falling asleep for a while. I wonder when I'll be able to get home.' I let my mind wander as I walked, eventually arriving at a door to which I hoped was my room.

I opened the door, and to my surprise, it looked just like my room. Except for the fact that there was the silver fox lady from before...cleaning? I wasn't sure what she was doing, but I was quick to shut the door and continue walking down the hall at a faster pace.

"Hey! You! Child!" I heard a voice call out behind me, stopping me in my tracks. Looks like I'd been found out. "How are you able to leave your room in such a mess after only sleeping in it for one night?"

"That's my room..?" I responded, shocked.

"Yes it is. I've neatened up and laid out a set of clothes for you to wear to dinner. You better get ready quickly." The way she glared at me made me feel as if she could see right into my soul.

"Y-yes ma'am!"

"Good. I'll see you in 30 minutes in the dining hall. Don't be late!" She sang as she walked out the door, letting me know it wasn't a friendly gesture.

I stood there for a moment, staring at the cosed door still wondering what was going on. Where is the kitchen? I shook my head to help me snap back to reality. I decided I might as well take a shower since Cuprum told me to freshen up. I wonder if they even have showers here...Oh well, there should be something of the sort. I looked around my room, taking in everything again. It really was majestic, the crystalline walls and ceiling somehow scattering the light in all different colours. How does it present itself as an opaque substance though? I'll have to ask about that.

To the left of the bed, there was a desk painted white which seemed to blend right in with the wall. Next to the desk, there was a door that I'd almost missed. I walked up, deciding I might as well check it out. Opening the door, I was surprised to find a fully furnished bathroom—with a decent sized bath full of steaming water. The bath and floor were made of the same pure white marble I'd seen everywhere else. Sadly there was nothing resembling a shower. Steaming hot baths are the next best thing right? I stripped down and let myself be enveloped by the hot, relaxing water in the bath.
