I was in so much pain. I was in the process of giving birth and I could feel everything as they came out. I felt someone at my legs trying to help me get the baby out. But the problem was that my husband was nowhere to be seen.
“Deep breaths, Deep breaths. They’re almost out.” Kaitlyn, my caretaker, was trying to keep me calm. She was the only person we could trust with the baby’s birth. Since our escape, we have been hiding, and today they found us.
We were the former heroes that saved the country, but we were being hunted by the family because they fear that we would become so strong that we would be the end of them. We never sought blood, but I could understand our strength. I wish I could apologize to that wizard.
The door began to jiggle open, and Kaitlyn grabbed a bar to prepare to hit the intruder to protect me. I was in too much pain to recognize the danger, and the baby started to move causing me more pain. Once the door open, a man bursts in and comes to me. Kaitlyn goes to hit him, but he grabs it mid-swing.
“I’m sorry my love. I was clearing the way.” He squeezes my hand, and it makes me feel better that he is at my side. The baby knows too and starts to come out, causing me even more immense pain.
“They’re coming. Ready?” I nodded quickly. “PUSH!” I screamed out and felt them come out. All that strength I had left, and I felt like my body gave out. Luckily, I heard the cries of a baby.
“It’s a girl. She’s a healthy baby girl.” I was happy but I felt like my body was weak. I wanted to close my eyes and take my last breath. But I began to hear voices outside the room we were in. “Ummm, Ma’am. They found us.”
“Love. We need to go.” I tried to get up, but I lost all my strength.
“I…I can’t” He tries to get me up, but I struggle. They burst through the door and Kaitlyn uses her body to defend our baby and they burst through. I still try to stand but Love left my side and waited. He attacks the invaders and quickly subdues him. He quickly came to me.
“Come on.” I took a deep breath and was able to stand. Kaitlyn came up to me and handed me our baby.
“Please take care, Mi’lady.”
“Stay safe. Enjoy life, Kaitlyn.” She bows towards us and turns away and leaves the room. Love and I put our foreheads together as I held our baby in my arms. I took a deep breath, and we left the room.
We set out to look for a place that would raise her right. We wanted her life to be pure and not have the problems she would have if he raised her. It was his idea that he would watch over from the shadows and I was okay with that. I knew it was the only way to do it.
“We are close.” He said. He rounds the corner, and I follow him around the corner. The rain makes it hard to hear anything around us. “Stop.” I stopped immediately. He stands there listening for something. I slightly hear movement through the puddles. Love moves me out of the way and blocks the swing of the sword with his own.
“ALEXIS! GO! I’LL CATCH UP!” I didn’t hesitate. I turned around and started to sprint down the street. I heard Love scream in anger as they battled. I covered Emilia’s face to protect her from the rain as I ran through it. I saw a face move out of the shadows. I stopped and a few more walked out.
“There she is. The fabled hero is born. We need her.”
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
“The lady is fair game?”
“Do whatever you want to the skank. The baby needs to be alive.” I began to walk backwards, but there were more bandits behind me. I was surrounded. I tried to protect her as much as I could, but I couldn’t defend myself. I closed my eyes and prayed for my love to save me.
Water splashed in my hood as I covered her. I look up to see someone standing over me with two swords. He shifted his weight, and it made the bandits turn to run away. He charged after and began to chase them. I got up and looked at Love began to slice through the running bandits. Wow. He’s showing no mercy to anyone wanting to hurt his little girl. I have never seen him like this.
After a minute he came back covered in blood. The rain was washing it off but still enough for me to see. He puts his swords on his back, and they disappeared. I begin to shake from exhaustion. He comes up to me and stabilizes me. I look up at him.
“You look so much worse. How are we supposed to make it if you’re getting worse?” He asks. He has worry deep in his eyes.
“We need to make sure she has the life we want for her.” He takes her from my arms, and I use the free arms to help myself up. We continue walking till we see a bigger building glowing from the lights around it. The three floors make me smile knowing that there are a lot of potential friends for her.
“This is the place.” We come up to the door and look at it. Love hands me her and begins to pull something out of and make something at the doorstep of this orphanage. I watch as he makes a basket for her to sleep in. He makes a stuffed animal and hugs it tightly. We trade and he holds Emilia, and I hug the teddy bear.
“She won’t know us, but she will be in loving care. One day, she’ll save the world from our mistakes.” He kisses her forehead and pulls her away. She’s awake and smiling. We saw her bright blue eyes and it almost made him cry. It made me cry to let go of my life so quickly.
He hands her to me, and I look at her. “Emilia, you will be the most amazing person in the world. You will change the lives of so many people. But always remember…” I took the necklace I had on and put it over her. The blue gemstone matching her eyes. “…Mommy always loves you. So does Daddy.” I kiss her forehead as well. I cried on to her and she continued to joyously play with me. “I’m sorry we can’t stay longer, baby girl.”
Love makes her go to sleep and I set her down in the basket. We nod and I walk away from the orphanage and stand at the corner of the street. Love knocks on the door very loudly and runs away. He comes to me and turns around and we watch someone walk out the door. It was a teenage girl with blond hair and hazel eyes. She wore glasses and a T-shirt and shorts under her shirt.
She looks around and sees nothing and then looks down and sees Emilia. She picks up the basket and sees the note. She looks around again one last time and then takes Emilia inside and closes the door. We expose ourselves from the corner and look at the building one last time.
“She’s safe now. She will never be scared to be herself.” Love hugged me from behind.
“Yeah. She’s safe, and I’m okay with that. What did you name her?”
“Emilia Reinhart.”
“It fits her.”
“Yes, it does.” I turned around and hugged him tightly.
“It’s hard to say goodbye. I wish it didn’t have to end.” My body gave out and I looked up at him holding me.
“I’m sorry, my love.” He begins to tear up.
“It’s okay. I’m just happy I got to see find someone who will love her.” I felt my mind begin to fade. I felt as the rain began to feel warmer, and the sky began to look brighter.
“I love you, Alexis.” He was holding me tightly.
“I…love you…too…” He stops me.
“It’s okay. I know. You can rest now.” I smile and close my eyes. I felt his lips on mine, and I kissed him back. I move my arm up to his face. I felt his wet face, but I felt the water at his with my thumb. He was tearing up right now and was about to cry for me and Emilia.
My thumb wipes the tears from his left eye but it’s all the strength it had before it fell. I felt as the world around me began to fly away. I smiled one last time as I felt his arms become the most comfortable bed to rest in. I was happy. Happy to be with him in my final moments, and to see Emilia safe. Emilia will be a hero, and I will watch over her in heaven.
Goodbye, Emilia. Mommy and Daddy will always love you.
