Prologue Part 1: A history so dark that it is forgotten

Hey guys, Illusive here! I have wanted to do something like this for a while now. I have had this idea in my head for months and months. Maybe even a year or two :P (I'm Lazy)

I finally decided to write up my fantasy story. This is my first one, so please give me as much feedback as possible as I would love to improve.

NOW! I am yet to come up with a name for the MC. So I thought it'd be nice to ask everyone for their ideas.

Also, this prologue is more like an introduction to the history of the world. Next part of the prologue will be the event leading to the discovery of the MC.

HAVE FUN (I hope) GUYS!

Prologue part 1

Many thousands of years ago, there existed a race that stood above all others. They wielded powers that surpassed any know creature. Even the might magical beast the dragon feared the sheer power of these beings. They could create and destroy anything they wanted. Did they do this? I don’t know.

All I know is that they are no longer with us.

They are known to us as “The Old God’s”, because they had powers that could rival a low to medium class god.

Stories are told that they ascended to a different plain of being. That they claimed their place in the heaven to live for all of eternity beyond ones reach.

Other stories say they left our vast continent of Setria and found a new continent to call home.

I don’t believe this. Why? Because nothing is so peaceful.

My name is John Vutrean, and I am the second in command of the guild known as “The Black Hand of Setria”. People generally refer to us as “The Knights of The Night”. Pretty boring if you ask me, but there you have it. The Knights of The Night” is a guild that consists of many skilled assassins for various races. Though people know of us, no-one know who we are.

Now back to the reason why I don’t believe any of those BS stories.

All beings have opposites. The Humans have Demons. The Elves have Dwarfs. Beasts have Monsters.

Now, what is the opposite of a god? The answer is quite simple. Devils.

Devils aren’t like Demons, though they are considered to be of the same creature group. Though Devils and Demons have similar instincts, they differ greatly in power, intelligence and number.

Demons possess the greater number, but just one Medium class Devil is worth one thousand Demon lords in power and intelligence. This is why Demons worship Devils. Both out of fear and respect.

Now, why do I mention the Devils? Simple. Devils don’t exist on Setria. No. They are from across the massive mass of ocean we call “The Endless Waters”.

How do we know of them? We have long ago discovered ancient records dating all the way back 23,000 years ago. These recordings talk about a great war fought between the Setrian populous against the waves of Demons and their Devil commanders. All the races of Setria rallied together against this never seen before power. Mass armies for formed from Humans, Elves, Dwarfs, Pixies, Spirits and even the Demi-human clans. The result was millions of soldiers ready to take this threat head one.

A quarter of this newly formed military was sent to the Western provinces to take on the first wave of Demons. Everyone knew about Demons as they had a few clans on Setria, but no-one knew what a Devil was. This lack of knowledge cost them dearly. An army composed of one million five hundred thousand soldiers and slice through with so much ease and efficiency that comparing it to a hot knife cutting through soft butter would be an insult to the knife that is the Devil commanded Demon armies. A better comparison would be taking an ice cube and throwing it into the sun expecting it to freeze the sun. I was a massacre.

When the higher ups of the armies heard this, they were stunned. Completely unable to think of how they could take on such a giant with their resources.

As the Demon armies tore through cities and villages, the Human Emperor decided he’d take a gamble. He stood up in the war meeting being conducted by his generals, clapped his hands and proclaimed in a booming voice that shouted supreme authority and he said “Stay my friends and loyal subjects. I have decided to ask the old God’s for their assistance in this crisis.

I cannot see us winning this without their help.”

The room went into total silence as all the generals looked to the Emperor as if he had gone mad.

One general stood up and asked “Are you sure your highness? Those “Old God’s” have never bothered to help us with any struggle we have faced before. They have always told us it is our own problem and that we must deal with it ourselves!” The general started to get extremely nervous as he was unsure what the Emperor was thinking.

The Emperor smiled and walked up to the general and placed a hand on his shoulder. He looked the general in the eyes and replied with great confidence “My friend. I understand that the chances of them helping us is slim to none, but it is more than worth the risks. If I remain, we might be able to hold the enemy advance of for a small amount of time, but that is it. If I were to get the Old God’s to help us, then we would have a chance.” Nearing the end of his reply, the emperor started gain a very small hint of unsureness in his voice.

“Then allow me to accompany you! We can’t risk anything happening to you, especially at a time like this!” said the general looking at his superior with pleading eyes.

“I will allow you to come with me, not as an escort or guard. But as a friend of many years.” Replied the Emperor with a strong aura of caring for his worry stricken friend.

And that is how they decided to go to the Old God’s to ask for help in their time of need.

When the Emperor, general and his men arrived in the province ruled by the Old God’s, they found that the Old God’s had already gathered an army. The army was no-where close to the size of the Setrian combined army, but the sense of power being emitted by the Old God army was so huge that it’d take the entire Demon army to be able to pick a fight with these ancient and powerful beings.

As the human group stood still in awe, a voice suddenly spoke to them from behind. It was the most beautiful and elegant voice they had ever heard. The voice said “So you have finally arrived! We have been waiting for you. We know what you are going to request. Just know that we have already decided that we are going to intervene in this war and end it. My leaders request that all your armies withdraw from the battlefields within two days.”

The Emperor turns around to see a woman stand there in full armour that shows its divinity with a bright, but not overwhelming glow. ‘No doubt that the glow would intensify greatly if she were to engage in battle.’ The Emperor thought before he spoke with full respect “Thank you, but shouldn’t we be helping you against the Demon army? It is massive beyond any scale we have ever seen before. They just keep destroying everything in their path. So all due respect, but I don’t think your army would be able to take them on.”

As the Emperor said this, the Old God woman smiled and in her melodic voice replied “We do not require your help. We understand that it is our time for this is our enemy. Each life they take is on our shoulders. Fear not, for ALL the Old God’s are going to war against the Devils and Demons. That includes “Eternity”, our blessed leader. Putting it in terms you’d understand, the first wave of Demons you face pale in comparison to him. We will destroy our enemy for the threat they impose on all of us. So worry not human. We possess the will and determination to stand against our natural foes.” With that said, she raises her hand and starts casting a teleportation spell. Before she finalizes the spell, she looked at the Emperor directly in the eyes and said “Don’t forget us. Remember us for who we are and what we are about to do.” As she said that, a tear dropped from her face and then a brilliant light engulfed the Emperor and his companions.

“What does that mean?” the General asked puzzled.

The Emperor dropped to his knees and replied “The end of a very wise people. Go, send word to all armies. We are pulling out immediately.”

After hear the Emperors words in a voice that sounded like a child losing his greatest heroes the General turned around and in a sympathetic voice reply “At once your highness… And they are.”

--- 2 Days Later---

“QUICKLY! FORM THE OBSERVATION PORTAL!” the emperor shouted in impatience.

After a few minutes and a huge commotion, a large window of black opened. After a few seconds, the Generals and staff members started murmuring in confusion and some worry.

After about 10 minutes of increasing tension and curiosity, the “Observation Portal” started developing an image. This image sent shivers down everyone’s spines. It was enough to even make the toughest of veterans want to curl up into a ball and wish for his or her mother.

What was seen in the portal was a massive army of Demons. It was obvious to all that the vanguards of the Demonic army had reformed into the rest of the horde. It was an image that made one think they saw a crimson sea with the occasional glow of red eyes. But what got everyone’s attention was the countless amounts of large 20 meter tall beings that stood above the sea of crimson.

At this sight a young Captain yelled “How are there so many Demon Lords?! I thought they NEVER worked with each other!” His voice could not contain the building fear that started surfacing itself.

“Where are the Old God’s? The Demon army is less than a day worth of travel! Have we been abandoned?” cried another young man who was recently promoted to Colonel. However no-one payed any attention to him as the “Observation Portal” was suddenly filled with a bright light.

“Phase Shift?” Asked a General.

At this new occurrence, the Emperor sate up even straighter, so much so that one would mistake him for a statue that showed an unnatural pose of a war hero. “Yes, and I can only think of one race that possess that level of power. They have arrived. Everyone pay close attention! This is a day for the history books!” the Emperor exclaimed with unmistakable joy.

When the light in the “Observation Portal” started to dissipate, there you could see an army of pure gold and white. This army was heavily outnumbered by their enemies, but even that was meaningless as you could simply feel the overwhelming power being emitted by this army.

Once the light vanished, the Old God army started to advance without any sign of hesitation. As the army started getting thing in arrow range of the Demon army, a few of the Old God’s suddenly started growing. Their size match that of the Demon lords. Once the Demon lords saw this, they started to panic and ordered all their underlings to engage this new threat.

As the sea of crimson rushed faster and faster to the Old God army like a flood that burst its banks, the Old God’s changed formation so that they had gaps big enough to for them to put their elbows up and touch their neighbour. The odd thing about this formation was the fact that each person behind the front soldiers put their backs firm against the person in front of them.

Everyone in the war room was confused as to why they would choose such a risky formation. They got the answer to their question as soon as the Demon army got within range for spears. But spears never came.

The front row would slash their swords and a brilliant light stretched out from the blades and sliced through the first 3 rows of Demons. After executing the attack, they would swiftly swap with the person behind them and perform the same attack. With the front two rows performing these attacks, the third row was not left with nothing to do. The third row erected powerful barriers to block the enemy magic bombardment. While the third row acted as a defence orientated group, the fourth row bombarded the enemy ranks with magic powerful enough to incinerate anything and everything.

This formation proved to be too much as the Old God army continued its advancement without pause. And they reached the Demon lords, the colossal Old God’s would engage the Demon lords and eliminate them as though it was a baby trying to fight a fully grown dragon.

Nothing could stop them.

That is until they had wiped out the enemy till the very back. There stood an army of beings that looked like Demons, but their eyes glowed a deep red. Everyone in the war room understood that these are not the same creatures they had faced before. What confirmed this was the aura they emitted. It was dark, deadly and… Calculated. This caused the war room to understand that these creatures would prove to be worthy adversaries to the Old God’s.

One of these creatures lifted its hand made a fist and pointed its finger at one of the colossal Old God’s.

*BANG*

A red beam was fired, tore through the colossi’s barrier and shot through it like the Old God was nothing. This marked as the start of a bloody battle that would end in one of these races perishing.

Unfortunately the historical recording ended there with no extra details of the Old God’s fate, because the record was old and has passed its time.

When this record was discovered, no-one would believe it because it “wasn’t authentic enough” or “it doesn’t say what happened to a race that dragons even feared”. I will tell you this. I believe that the Old God’s found their end at the hands of the Devils. Though I also believe that the Devils suffered greatly, enough for them to pull back and retreat to wherever they are from.

Now my friends, enough of my history lesson. Let me tell you about my adventures with a man I wasn’t aware of to have been the prophesized being that would save, or destroy the world. A man I called my enemy and target at first, but soon came to have a strong friendship with him.

Let me tell you about “The Last Soul”.
