2 - The Immortal Cave

Chris Stared at the two corpses, a pleasant heat escaping his core and washing away his remaining pain. He knew, without a single doubt his best friend was dead. He didn’t say anything, didn’t move. Just stared for several minutes as the black blood of the monster mixed with Zach’s red.

Absently he noticed he was no longer in pain. In fact, he felt amazing, like he could run a marathon with ease, or ace a test he hadn’t even studied for. He could also see much better. This improvement is what finally snapped him out of his shock. Any hope he had of bringing his friend out of this cursed cave was crushed as he saw something that made his heart stop.

Two more of the lizards, Gilas he supposed, were crawling towards the two bodies on the ground. Chris knew staying there would be his death, hell if Zach didn’t manage to kill the first one, he’d likely already be dead. So, he started to panic and look around. The hole they had dropped down was still above him, but he would have to get closer to those damned lizards to get to the rope.

There bottom of the hole was only a few meters across, over half of which Chris would currently consider a lizard food zone. Luckily for Chris there was more than one connecting tunnel, however the one not blocked was clearly going farther down.

I’m sorry Zach. I swear ill kill all of those damned lizards after I get a bit stronger.

Turning with tears starting to flow down his face, Chris ran away from his only friend. The tunnel split off several times. Chris just ran. He saw a few more lizards down different tunnels, but never ran into another. He ran for what felt like hours, doing his best not to think about anything. He failed of course, the entire encounter playing on repeat in his head. His mind remembering the scene more clearly than anything he had seen before.

Eventually he stopped. He hadn’t seen another of the lizards for a while and felt like he was about to pass out. He knew he was in deep shit, but he couldn’t think of anything to do. If he ran into another of those lizards, he was definitely dead. Well, he did level up a few times…. Maybe he could take one now?

Now that I think about it, I haven’t even seen my status, or is it a profile?

As soon as he thought profile, a blue box appeared in front of his face.

Chris looked down at the biggest unknown on the profile. The titles. After thinking about them for a second, he got more information.

Progenitor

A being integrated during expansion LL762-938. To assist your transition, you will learn and level skills faster, as well as upgrade abilities more easily while you remain in the lower tiers. Your mind has been slightly altered to be more adaptable.

Slayer

You managed to kill a being 10 levels above you. +5 to all stats

First Giant slayer

You were the First enlightened being on your great world to kill a being 30 levels higher than yourself. +10 to all stats +10% to all stats

First to Ten

You were the first enlightened being to reach level 10 on your world. +10 to all stats +5% to all stats

Ah, that would explain it. I get 25 points in every stat and 15% boost for letting my best friend die and running away. Neat.

He assumed that the First Giant Slayer Title was a variant for being the first, meaning he wasn’t the first to kill something ten levels above him. Chris decided not to think too much about what that meant for the rest of the world.

Chris spent some time debating on where to put his free points, before deciding to save them. In his mind it likely wouldn’t matter if he had them if he ran into another Gila, and he didn’t know enough about what the stats did to spend them effectively. He considered hunting some of the Gila but realized he would probably die.

The first time it was completely focused on eating his friend, and just wanted him out of the way. If it focused on him, he would probably find out why the thing was over level 30. Instead, he took out a protein bar from his bag that was somehow still with him, and some water.

Chris sat against the wall for a moment, eating and thinking about what to do. He put off thinking about his profile too much, focusing on his current situation.

I guess I’m stuck just wandering around this stupid cave, trying to find an exit before I starve…

Looking at his remaining food, which would likely happen within a day or two, unless his new stats made him need to eat less. After resting for a few minutes, he decided to continue down the tunnel he had been running down.

He walked for about half an hour when he noticed a dead end. Well at least it looked like ne at first. AS Chris walked up to the perfectly flat wall at the end of the tunnel, he noticed a thin crack going down the center of it. On top of the unnaturalness of the ending, it just felt strange to Chris. He had no idea why but as he got closer the air almost felt like it got heavier. It was a strange feeling.

About 10 meters away from the wall, he got a notification.

*Ding

You have entered a mana dense area. Mana Regenerates faster, but beware to much of anything can be bad

Well, that’s slightly foreboding.

Chris continued walking forward while watching his health bar, which he had willed to be visible at all times. Eventually he reached the wall and did the only thing that could possibly make sense. He touched it.

*Ding

Chris stared at the new screen in front of him. He thought for only a few seconds before smiling.

I guess 6 luck must be pretty high.

“YES!” Chris almost shouted the answer.

The wall shook for a moment. The small crack in the middle expanding to show a black nothingness, that expanded, consuming the young man standing in front of it. It quickly returned to being just a wall, at the end of a mile long tunnel, a few miles underground.
