The last voyage

You look into the eyes of your first mate, he always looked so composed. Often you wondered if he could be a better captain than you ever were. Now he too looks scared, his eyes are watery, his expression that of pure denial. You honestly can't blame him, you also can't blame your crew.

You would be a madman to scream to them tales of discipline and mutiny. It also would be hypocritical. Just like everyone else, you look at the various screens plastered with warnings. The red light and alarm on the bridge and the whole ship. You too, look to your various neighbors, searching for an answer, only finding the same scared faces everywhere. You still don’t know how everything came to be what it is now, although you and your crew knew the risks.

Everyone at the ship lost loved ones to the Germans; you yourself lost your daughter and her mother. Fighting the Germans in a submarine was always a suicide mission, you knew that, but it was always worth it. But that it actually happened. That it would really happen always felt so distant, like a nightmare never actually happening. And you are sure that you aren't alone with this.

You look down to your right, your service handgun lies there. It’s a tempting thought. From what you heard it already happened, it wouldn’t be shameful. Everyone dies anyway, only to your daughter you are sorry.

You see your old house before you, it’s collapsed, burning, a direct bomb hit. You see your daughter at the window, you see her tears. Her burned hair.

“I don’t want to die! Please da-”

“Sir! Sir! Transmission!” You look to the radar officer. Did he go crazy? Surely this is a joke. You run to him. Staring at the radio. Nothing, just like you expected. You chuckle internally that you thought for a second otherwise. This deep underwater, nothing from the surface travels this far down; there is nothing below.

You are tempted to scold him harshly, but you stop yourself. That someone would go crazy was to be expected, but you didn’t expect it to be so fast. “Officer, there is no-”

You stop. You now hear, something. It comes from the radio, an angel voice. The mighty high voice makes your breathing hard.

“The enemies are here.” The angel says.

You look around. Germans! Germans everywhere! You take out your service gun.

“I-I can’t breathe.” You hear one of them say.

You don’t wonder why. These Germans were always crazy. You shoot; the German didn’t even have time to scream. Your bullet hit his head, killing him instantly. The other Germans scream after their Captain. You wonder a bit why. This is your ship, not the Germans. But if it was one of these German assholes, you’re proud.

You don’t feel any sympathy to the German. They killed you and your crew, your Comrades, and your daughter. The civilian ship wasn't nearly enough to compensate for your daughter. You would have destroyed more if this civilian ship didn’t have an escort! The hundred ships weren't enough! You want that all Germans die! And now they board your ship! Your ship! You-

You hear the angels voice once again as you shoot another German. This time it stops your breath entirely. “I’m proud father. I’m really am.” You stop. A tear falls on the ground. You look to the radio. Out of the radio steps a beautiful young woman. It's your daughter. She has grown big. But her big smile is the same. You feel incredibly tired as you reach after. Everything goes black as you hug her.
