Chapter 2: A New Beginning?
Lost and unsure of what to do, still traumatized by what had just happened, the distant sound of gunfire and alarming screams from the city echoed in Ayana’s mind. Her heart raced. Panic and despair enveloped her as she ran into the forest behind her house. It was the only place that seemed to offer even a minimal sense of safety. The feeling of being hunted accompanied her with every step. The dense vegetation and darkness around her contributed to the sense of oppression.
Each step Ayana took on the ground covered with dry leaves was a conscious effort to avoid making noise. The silence of the forest was only interrupted by the sound of twigs breaking under her feet and the occasional whisper of the wind through the trees. Fear was almost palpable, a constant presence that seemed to intensify with every passing second.
As she moved through the woods, a sudden crack made Ayana freeze. Her heart leaped into her throat as she heard the sound of heavy footsteps approaching. Desperate, she hid behind a tree, her body trembling as she tried to control her ragged breathing. The fear of encountering an enemy soldier, ruthless and deadly, was almost unbearable. The footsteps grew closer, and Ayana’s anxiety reached a peak. Every sound seemed amplified by the growing panic. She pressed her hand against her mouth to stifle a scream that threatened to escape.
The tension was unbearable. Her mind raced, imagining the worst possible scenario.
Then, an armed figure emerged from the shadows. The soldier’s uniform was different from what Ayana had expected, but something about the insignia on his uniform seemed familiar. Relief and tension battled within her as the figure approached. The soldier noticed the movement and took a step towards her, his expression a mix of confusion and concern.
“Who’s there?” the soldier asked, his voice laced with caution and a hint of authority.
Ayana hesitated. Her body was still trembling, but a glimmer of hope began to grow inside her. With a tremendous effort to keep her voice steady, she replied, trying to stay hidden in the shadows.
“It’s me… Ayana.”
The soldier hesitated for a moment, his expression shifting from alertness to relief. He took another step towards her, and Ayana felt tears of relief beginning to form in her eyes. The soldier recognized her, and his stance relaxed.
“Ayana?” the soldier asked, his voice now softened by genuine concern. “Are you safe? What happened?”
Ayana stepped out of the shadows, and the soldier approached carefully, noticing the devastation on her face. The shock and pain were evident. Ayana struggled to control her tears. Her words came out in sobs, each phrase a battle against the pain.
“My mother… my mother is dead. And my father and my brother…” Her voice broke, and tears began to slip down. “I ate their flesh…”
The soldier listened with a look of deep sadness. He moved closer and placed a comforting hand on Ayana’s shoulder.
“Listen, you’ve been through terrible things, things no one should have to face. But you survived. That’s the most important thing.” He spoke with firmness and kindness. “I’m sure your family wanted you to survive. They gave their lives to protect you, and you’re here, fighting, surviving. That’s a testament to your strength.”
Ayana looked at him. His words began to penetrate her dazed mind. The soldier continued with a voice full of determination.
“Don’t let what happened define who you are. Your pain is real, but your courage is even greater. We’re not safe here in the forest. We need to leave. I have a jeep right there. Let’s go to the military base in Nadira. There, you’ll find safety and new friendships. You’re not alone.”
With these words of encouragement, a spark of hope began to ignite within Ayana. She nodded and allowed the soldier to lead her out of the forest. They walked quickly towards the jeep. The sound of their footsteps echoed on the forest floor. The jeep was hidden among the trees, and the soldier helped Ayana climb in. She settled into the seat, her body still trembling, but now with a growing sense of hope.
The jeep moved along the road towards the military base. Ayana allowed herself a moment to take a deep breath, reflecting on what might come next.
As the military base appeared in the distance—a promise of safety and stability—the soldier tried to cheer Ayana up with an encouraging smile.
“Look, young lady! Our military base,” said the soldier, attempting to bring a little hope.
“Finally arrived,” Ayana replied, a relieved smile lighting up her face despite her fatigue and tension.
But hope was quickly replaced by panic. A growing, unsettling sound filled the air: an airplane was approaching, its engines growing increasingly deafening. The soldier cast a quick glance at the sky, his face pale with fear. He made the jeep turn around with a sharp motion.

“What are you doing, soldier?” Ayana shouted, confused and terrified, her heart racing. The sense of safety she had begun to feel was now dissipating.
“We have to run before it’s too late!” the soldier responded, his voice laden with urgency and dread.
Before Ayana could fully grasp the situation, a devastating explosion shook the area. The deafening sound of the bomb exploding at the military base hurled the jeep away. The vehicle spun through the air and landed upside down. The twisted metal and shattered glass created a chaotic and terrifying scene.
With a superhuman effort, Ayana struggled to open her eyes. Every movement was a battle against the searing pain that seemed to invade her body. Trying to find an exit, she searched the interior of the jeep, desperately looking for signs of the soldier.
“Did he abandon me?” Ayana thought, despair tinting her thoughts. But looking at the wreckage of the vehicle, she dismissed the idea. The soldier seemed to be an honorable person. What truly terrified her was the feeling of being completely alone amidst the chaos.
Determined not to succumb to despair, Ayana forced herself to free the seatbelt, her body protesting with every move. She crawled out of the jeep, her aching muscles and foggy mind making each movement feel like a monumental effort.
The deserted road before her seemed endless and relentless—a wasteland of debris and disturbing silence. The silence was abruptly broken by the sound of heavy, rhythmic footsteps. Ayana lifted her head, her heart racing with fear. On the horizon, the silhouette of an enemy patrol was forming, approaching with a threatening march. The tension in the air was palpable, every sound amplified by the rising sense of panic.
The group of soldiers approached rapidly, and Ayana’s heart pounded frantically in her chest. She tried to get up, her legs trembling under the weight of exhaustion and pain. The fear of being captured was overwhelming, and each step felt like a struggle against an inevitable fate.
“We’ve got another one here!” shouted one of the soldiers, his voice cutting through the air with a tone of triumph. The soldiers approached, their heavy, coordinated footsteps creating a terrifying symphony of imminent conquest.
Ayana tried to resist, but her weakness was crushing. The effort to fight against the soldiers proved futile. Soon she was surrounded and subdued. Ropes were quickly tied around her hands, and the soldiers placed her in the back of a military truck.
The sense of despair grew as she was placed in the truck bed. The sight of her victorious captors made her feel utterly powerless.
As the truck moved on, Ayana struggled against the feeling of defeat. The roar of the truck’s engine and the constant jostling only increased her discomfort. Then, looking around, her eyes fell upon an unexpected sight.
In the back of the truck, she found three girls, all young and seeming to be about her age. They were all bound, but their faces revealed a strange mixture of hope and sympathy.
Ayana adjusted herself in the truck bed, trying to settle among the three girls who, despite the desperate situation, offered a sense of unexpected company. Lina, with her warm smile, introduced herself with a confidence that immediately made Ayana feel a bit more at ease.
“Hi, you’re new here. I’m Lina,” said the girl, directing a beautiful and friendly smile at Ayana. Her maturity and way of speaking were like that of an older sister, even though she was only 19.
“This is Amira; she doesn’t like to talk much. It looks like she’s suffered quite a bit.” Amira, a girl with dark eyes and a reserved expression, nodded in greeting. Her gaze conveyed a silent understanding.
“And I’m Yasmin!” exclaimed the third girl with a contagious energy. “Oh my God, you’re so beautiful and hot! Look at those boobs, they’re huge!” Yasmin laughed, her effervescent and somewhat outrageous personality contrasting with the grim situation. Ayana blushed but couldn’t help smiling a little at Yasmin’s irreverent nature.
“My name is Ayana, nice to meet you all,” she said, somewhat embarrassed, trying to adjust to the light tone of the conversation. “With your body, you’ll distract much more than I can,” Yasmin said, laughing. Her loud and cheerful laugh provided a moment of relief amidst the despair. Her playful words helped break the ice and made Ayana feel a bit more at ease.
However, the light-hearted conversation among the girls was interrupted by a disturbing conversation among the soldiers up front.
“Do you think the boss will take any of the four girls? If not, we’re screwed and we’ll have to kill them. I don’t know what the boss likes, but all four are pretty attractive,” said one of the soldiers, named Ivan, with a tone of discouragement.
“I think it’s better to kill them now before some miracle saves any of them,” replied the other soldier coldly.
“You’re always worried about what might happen with the enemies, but let’s just drop them off at the nearest territory we control, which is about 2 kilometers from here,” Ivan said, trying to calm the situation.
The soldiers’ words hit Ayana like a cold bucket of water. The weight of despair enveloped her once again, and she felt an overwhelming heaviness in her chest. The sacrifice of her parents and brother seemed to be in vain, and tears began to slip down her face. But she quickly wiped them away, determined to keep hope alive.
“Hey, calm down, Ayana,” said Lina, leaning over her shoulder in a comforting manner. “We’ll find a way out of this, I promise. We’re not alone; we have a chance.” Yasmin lay down on her lap, trying to cheer Ayana up. “Look, girl, I know it seems like a total mess right now, but at least we have a chance to laugh about this in the future. If life gives you lemons, make lemonade, right?” She winked and made a funny face, trying to make Ayana smile. Amira, who had remained silent until then, offered a small smile. Her look of understanding and solidarity made Ayana feel a bit more supported. “We’ll figure it out,” said Amira, affectionately ruffling Ayana’s hair. Her voice was timid but full of determination.
The truck continued on its way, and as the four girls shared light conversation and some hope, the sense of camaraderie began to replace the fear. Despite the chaos and uncertainties ahead, Ayana felt a small spark of hope ignite in her heart. Maybe, just maybe, they could find a way to overcome this crisis together. The future was still uncertain, but the presence of these new friends provided a glimpse of strength and support that Ayana needed to keep fighting.
