Chapter Four

The confrontation turned into a tense standoff, the abandoned hospital echoed with the scraping claws of the lesser Nocturnales rapidly surrounding the room where Marcus and Victor stood across from their newest enemy. Sandra now freed from her bindings stood behind Marcus and Victor.

“Let’s just get out of here-” Sandra tried whispering to the two who freed her while creeping toward the door only to back into the chest of the new being. In the blink of an eye it had crossed the room now standing between the trio and the exit.

The being that could only be another ancient Vampire spoke jovially seemingly giddy at the situation, “We can’t have that now can we? Best to keep this just between us, after all the little beasties outside just don’t have the history we do.”

As Marcus and Victor moved forward to confront the ancient Vampire in the dimly lit chamber, there was a sudden shift in the atmosphere. The vampire's eyes, previously happy, narrowed with a coldness that sent a shiver down Marcus's spine.

"Victor, my old friend," the ancient Vampire hissed, revealing a twisted smirk. "I've been waiting for this reunion."

“I must have underestimated your brutality Felix.” Viktor announced to the room leaving Marcus in confusion at the change in the situation.

The newly revealed Felix chuckled to himself before asking, “You remembered my name?”

“I never forget.” Victor responded as plainly as if he were commenting about the color of the sky.

“Well I had to resort to some unseemly methods since you removed my head but, like my anger at Gaugn I’ve put it behind me, to move forward and achieve your greatest dream.” Felix said with a mad glee shining in his eyes.

Before Marcus could react, the room erupted into chaos. Unseen mechanisms activated, and the ground beneath them gave way to a concealed pit. Marcus desperately reached out, but he and Victor tumbled into the trap together.

As they fell, the ancient Vampire cackled, orchestrating a trap specifically designed for Victor. The pit led to an underground chamber, dimly lit by an eerie glow. Marcus quickly scrambled to his feet, his eyes searching for any sign of his wife.

The realization struck him like a dagger to the heart as he saw her and instantly knew she was gone.

The ancient Vampire, reveling in the success of its trap, emerged from the shadows. Marcus's wife lay lifeless on a pile of rubble having fallen in on the edge of the pit, an unintentional victim to the Vampire's sinister plans. Grief and fury welled up within Marcus, his voice a seething growl, "What have you done?"

Victor, his cheek now bearing a deep scratch, rose to his feet. The vampire had successfully drawn blood, and a sinister satisfaction glinted in its eyes.

"Victor," the ancient Vampire purred, "you were always the thorn in my side. Now, with your blood, my ascension is inevitable."

Marcus, fueled by a potent mix of grief and rage, screamed at the Vampire, but Victor restrained him. "Marcus, we need a plan. We have to get out of here."

The ancient Vampire, basking in its apparent victory, slowly walked away from where he stood at the top of the pit.

"I can’t leave her, not again," Marcus whispered, a determination hardening in his eyes.

Silently Victor nodded before punching a hole large enough in the wall nearest allowing Marcus to carry his the body of his lost love to the outside. Although the long hallways and corridors that led to the exit were filled to the brim with lesser Nocturnales not a single one was able to get even close to passing Victor.
