Chapter 1 - Academy

Luci Pladark lay on his bed, drooling on his pillow. Just when he formed a creepy smile, his alarm went off, awaking him. He jumped up, moving his hands right to his hips in a criss-crossed gesture. Then, he remembered there was nothing there. He rubbed his eyes, yawning, then searched for some clean clothes as his current ones were almost rags. He held a smile as he found a clean shirt, replacing his current one. He did nothing about his pants as he knew it was his best.

He walked to the kitchen, looking in the cuboards in the early morning darkness. All he found was a large lemon. When life gives you lemons, he thought, biting into it with a disgusted look. He finished it, quickly drinking a little bit of water, drowning out the taste. He zoned out for a minute, looking at the mold in the corners of the white walls. He didn't stay long in that state, and ran to the door, grabbing his coat hanging off a nearby coatholder. Then, he left.

He ran through the crowded streets, bumping into lizardmen, kobalts, demi-humans, humans, ect. until he reached a gate. The gate to the world's largest academy of Dungeoneers. It would be a lot more impressive of a title, if it weren't the only one. But still, it was a rather prestigious place that birthed a number of A-rank Dungeoneers. And he walked in, a huge smile plastered on his androgynous face.

He fit in with the crowd, as they all looked excited to be here, though not many were of the same race as him. Right now, he could only see five other demons. They all looked better off than Luci, but they weren't nearly as happy looking. That's besides the point, though.

Entering the building, after crossing the wide, thin courtyard, every being found themselves in a huge building that easily fitted the large amount of people. Easily. Luci recognised this as spatial magic, although he didn't know how it worked. They all stood, guided into lines by the staff standing on the sides into rows based on their races. Luci moved to the back, where the demons stood. One staff asked him why he was there, since he looked so similar to a human. However, after he explained himself, she let him off.

The orientation started, although it didn't explain anything new to Luci. Just the ranks of F-SSS, the simple fundamentals of magic, the history of the school, and the taboo magic. Luci knew all of these things, so he didn't really pay attention to anything stated. He mainly focused on a fly in the air, resisting his urges to eat it. He looked at his fellow demons, seeing them doing the same thing. Even if there wasn't a fly to distract him, the person speaking was too distant for him to hear anything.

The orientation ended much quicker than he expected it to, which was a good thing, as he and his fellow demons would have gone for the fly in moments. Or, in the likely case, would've killed others to eat it. Again, they were led somewhere according to races; the demons not even moving. Luci wasn't the only one nervous about this, as the principal walked to them, followed by a mismatch of races.

He coughed when he reached them, glaring at the group. "Because of the lack of certain races, multiple races will be mixed into a single class," Principal Leonidas Unities said. Both groups mumbled a greeting, not really acknowledging each other. Leonidas looked satisfied, then spoke, "My daughter, an angel, will also be in the class." His pleased voice turned into something sinister as he said, "So don't any of you demons even think about talking with her." He turned and left, allowing another teacher to take us to a different building.

We moved into an empty classroom, not a word being said between each student. The instructor talked about the history of this school, mostly about architecture. Quietly, Luci listened to every word he said. He suspected the other demons were doing the same. They also seperated to different areas, allowing one space between them and other races. Luci did the same.

As the instructor was lecturing, he was actually watching all the students, instantly seeing their cliques. Internally, he sighed, and began to talk about some important stuff.

"This school was once built in order to bring together the differences between the races," he said, moving through the room. "Sadly, that idea has long been thrown out the window, wouldn't you all agree?" A quick look through the room would show that everyone felt awkward. "Instead, it has been changed to creating Dungeoneers, the people who go into dungeons." He placed his hands on the podium. "By the way, my name is Pete. Just call me Pete."

The door to the classroom was slammed open, a girl with pure white wings standing there, panting. Everyone in the room knew it was the Principal's daughter. Luci noticed Pete's eyes dancing across the room, a smile appearing when they landed on Luci. "Sorry I'm late, teacher," she said, her face brightening. A little more, and she would have rivalled the Sun. "I was helping people on the way."

"No worries, Miss Unities," Pete responded, holding a mischevious smile. "Now, take a seat there," he said, pointing at the seat next to Luci.

She greeted Luci with a smile, "Hello there."

Luci responded with a muffled, "Hi," and turned his head to Pete, who continued talking.

"Now, call me old-fashioned, but we are not going to talk about dungeons until everyone," his eyes darted through the classroom, "At least talks to each other. Until then, free time." He leaned back, a hot cup of coffee appearing in his hand. Then he just stood.

There was silence for five minutes, until someone spoke, "Do we really have to do this?" When Luci looked over, it was an elf. Not just a normal elf. She seemed more noble than all the other elves he's seen, so he guessed she was a High-elf. Pete ignored her, sipping on a new cup of something.

The angel next to Luci looked at him and decided to ask quietly, "So, if you don't mind me asking, what race- did you move further?" The only thing Luci thought was 'Damn, she realised'. After all, with the threat of Principal Leonidas, why would he speak to her? He looked at her for a second, instantly turning his head. His hair blew upwards, showing one of his horns. It was enough for an angel like her, though, and she felt awkward.

"My father told me to stay from demons like you," she said, getting up to move. She was disgusted with him.

But before she could actually move, Pete, who was sipping something new, spoke up, "Sit down, Christine." She tried to sit somewhere else, getting stopped by Pete again. "Christine, sit back where you were sitting, and there will be no issues." Once again, she took another step. A casual line from Pete made her backtrack, though. "Here I thought angels would listen to rules."

Stubbornly, she sat down, crossing her arms as she did so. "I'm not talking to you," Christine mumbled for Luci to hear. Luci didn't respond. She spoke again, slightly louder, still no more than a whisper, "Father warned me you demons would be bad news." Once again, he didn't speak back. Curiously, she peeked out of the corner of her eyes, seeing Luci already asleep. He had his head on the desk, his arms hanging loosely to his sides. When she looked around, she noticed all of the demons like that.

Luci was awoken by taps on his side. He looked over, then remembered an angel was sitting there, so he looked the other way. "It's not good to be sleeping during school," she whispered, sounding angry. He hadn't even noticed that he fell asleep.

"It's not my fault," he muttered, not intending to say that aloud. She humphed, turning to look at her other side. On that side was a High-dwarf, looking at Luci and Christine with the most stupid face in the world. Suddenly, Luci felt his skin cool down, any form of emotion disappearing from his appearance.

Let's go back a little to when before Christine walked in through the door. Kevin, a High-dwarf, was watching the human-like devil, Luci, and stroked his beard in thought. He thought about machines specific to him, wwhat he might be able to do, help with, or even what he can't. He kept thinking about this until Christine sat next to him. Then, he thought about what an angel and devil could do together. It was a hell of a lot more than what one could do. But when Luci kept slinking away, quietly, Kevin's brain started to malfunction. It was like the wheels in his head had started to rust, breaking off piece after piece.

Then she tried walking away, after saying some rude things about Luci's race, which was uncalled for. But she was forced to sit down. His beard had felt the pressure emanating just out of reach. And then the devil had fallen asleep, just like 1, 2, 3. The devil just barely in sight also fell asleep, in almost the exact same timing. Needless to say, he felt like he had breathed in some hallucinogenic, because of how similar this was.

Then Christine woke him up, barraging him with a few insults. He retaliated, Kevin guessed, because she turned around to face him. At this point, his brain stood at a standstill, trying to understand what just happened. And that was where we left off.
