The Lady Goblin

Our everyday lives are full of constant decisions, mistakes and regrets.

This is not really new or all that profound, but it is still true.

Vera now has to make a life changing decision.

A tall, lanky man in an old school double breasted gray suit sits across a small café table. On the table is a contract, a way to start again, start fresh. His disturbingly wide smile and gleeful eyes peer down on Vera from his heightened position. Her 5 foot 6 inches seeming miniscule to his giant 6 foot 4 inches.

"What are you willing to give me and for what?" Vera asked apprehensively. She knew this man or maybe demon may try to take advantage of her desperation to escape her current life, but she was was willing to risk it.

"I will allow you to enter a new world, full of magic, legendary warriors and mystical beast. You will be able to grow, explore, to live." he explained, "That is what you want, yes?

"Like something out of a storybook huh. So, what do you want in return."

"All you need to do is find a little girl named Aria. It's a good deal, no?” he says as his grin grows wider. He pushes the piece of paper forward towards Vera motioning for her to sign already.

Vera knew that this may be a mistake. It could not be that easy otherwise he would have done it himself. There was more to this than she was aware of, but Vera had already let go of leftover hesitation. She took up the pen from the table and signed the contract.

"I hope I don't regret this."

That was the last thing Vera remembered about their meeting.

Waking up in a cave, and laying on a stone bed is probably not pleasant for most people. It is especially unpleasant for Vera, a girl who grew up in the comfy city. Even the sight of the stone walls around her confused her.

'Where am I?' Vera asked herself.

The soft light from the sun poking in the cave and the sound of birds and other wildlife chirping and rummaging through the forest outside the cave. The sounds and sights gave the scene a sense of serenity which was pushed away by the most horrible scent that Vera had ever smelt. The scent seemed to be a mix of shit, piss, and something else that Vera could not identify.

"What the hell is that?" Vera screeched as she looked around the cave to find the source of the repulsive odor.

It was at that moment, she noticed the unspeakable collection lying right next to her makeshift stone bed.

Vera dashed out of the cave in disgust only for the scent of the "collection" to stick with her. What a fabulous debut in her new world.

"Gaa'rap puti noepiel" yelled an ugly green-skinned humanoid creature next to her.

"That's a goblin right? Why am I seeing a goblin?"

Vera started looking around at her surrounding and many more goblins moving about. Vera's brain started working through her confusion to figure out what exactly was happening.

'I signed the contract, then I woke up in a shit-filled cave in the middle of some forest and now I'm looking at a fantasy goblin.'

Vera then looked down at her hands. Two deep green hands sat at her sides. It didn't take a genius to realize what had occurred.

'I'm a goblin now?

'Was this in the contra-?'

"Work. Farm. Now!" shouted the goblin as he whacked me on my head with a wooden stick.

He then pointed to a small farm where other goblins where other goblins were working. It was pretty obvious what he wanted her to do and despite the rebellious emotions stirring from within her, she felt compelled to listen to his instruction. So, she headed to the farm completely forgetting about her previous line of thought and the contract.

The little farm was poorly kept at best. There were more weeds than produce inside and the other goblins working were pulling out the unripe crops rather than the weeds.

'Well, I don't care about how they decide to manage their garden.'

'Status'

The classic word to say when you wake up in what seems to be another world. Saying it is a is a requirement for survival.

Despite being from the city, Vera did have experience with a bit of farm work. Her uncle lived in the countryside and led a very successful dairy farm. he also dabbled in crops but most of his focus was on taking care of his animals. So, pulling out weeds from a small farm or rather garden was a very simple task for her.

While plucking out the weeds, Vera took the opportunity to observe the small community of goblins. There were three different types of goblins.

The farmers were the first type of villager and at the moment Vera fell in this category. They carried around rusted farm tools that were probaly the spoils of some human village raid. Their job was to plant, maintain, and harvest. Though they did not do their jobs very well.

Secondly were the enforcers. The enforcers ensured that the goblins completed their daily tasks. They carried around thick wooden clubs and were responsible for waking up the farmers and also preparing food while they worked. The enforcers kept the peace and order in the village like the police did on Earth. The guy who whacked Vera was part of this group.

Lastly were the hunters who were responsible for bringing wild game to the village. They were bigger and stronger than the other villagers because they killed monsters and wildlife for food. Hunters carried around daggers and wooden spears.

Taking in consideration that this world uses a system, leveling up is the only thing one should focus on. The stronger you get, the more freedon you get to do as you please.

'I won't be able to level up if I'm stuck farming all day and if I don't level up when or if the village comes under attack.'

'I'll die.'

Vera could not let herself be killed. She had come to a fantasy world. She escaped into her escape.

Novels, games, and movies were all that kept Vera going in a world that just seemed to loop infinitely and sucked away at her soul. Wake up, eat breakfast, work, eat lunch, work more, go home, eat dinner, go to sleep, and repeat.

It did not matter how she got here or why was she a goblin. This was a chance for something more, something new. A world completely foreign to her.

'I'm not dying in some rundown goblin village. I am going to explore this world and finally experience what it means to live!' Vera shouted from the depths of her soul.

Vera made becoming a hunter her new goal.
