Chapter 23: The Sacrificial Offerings

Chapter 23: The Sacrificial Offerings

The dark, narrow tunnel was silent. A faint sound of running water, perhaps from underground streams or sewers, could be heard. The two “Lust” conduits walked ahead, chatting and laughing, discussing various things about “sacrifice” and the “Scholar of Sin.” “Shadow Walker” followed behind them. As Selene had said, the difference between superhumans and conduits wasn’t that much smaller than the difference between superhumans and ordinary people. He could clearly feel that if he wanted to, the dagger in his hand could pierce their necks before they even noticed him.

When they died, they wouldn’t even know who killed them… This restored a little of the confidence he had lost after being tracked, ambushed, and forced to sign the Binding Contract by Selene.

He calmly moved closer. The natural talent of his profession allowed him to completely conceal his breathing and footsteps from within five meters. Drops of water fell from the ceiling of the tunnel, making a clear sound as they struck the bare ground. The conversation between the two heretics also reached her ears.

“…. Why are there two sacrifices today?”

“You only joined a few weeks ago, so you wouldn’t know.” The heretic on the right lowered his voice, seeming to be extremely wary of something. Even in their own lair, he felt fear. “Our sect had a sacrifice that wasn’t performed on time because we were being hunted by the ‘Madwoman.’ Though the Lord didn’t blame us, we still had to make up for it…”

“Madwoman…?”

“The president of the Lanstier Magic Society. Lilith.”

“Why is she called that?” The heretic on the left was startled for a moment, then hesitated before answering. “There’s someone even crazier than us… I mean, what’s special about her?”

“…. You’ll know the moment you see her.” The heretic on the right didn’t seem to want to answer that question.

“I heard the president is a superhuman mage. How did our sect manage to survive being hunted by her?” The new recruit changed the subject.

They were only “conduits,” who hadn’t even entered the lowest level. She was a superhuman at the highest level, a difference of about seven levels… To put it bluntly, this kind of difference, for these heretics, was no different than facing a god. It meant certain death.

But how could their sect still exist after being hunted by someone like that?

“It’s because the Lord bestowed his blessing.” The heretic on the right’s expression became more serious. “We were hiding around Nymph Fu at the time. There was the Mittal fog fortress in the sky, and on the ground, the madwoman, along with the station, were searching high and low for us. Just when we were about to be discovered, the Lord bestowed a miracle—

“The madwoman was struck by the Lord’s punishment and fell to the ground, badly wounded. The police dogs hunting us were also affected. Most of them were killed or severely injured. As for that lofty fortress in the sky, ah, it almost fell from the sky! The Lord’s divine power is beyond the reach of ordinary people. And those who serve the Lord will never be abandoned!”

The two exchanged glances and said in unison,

“We only pray that the ‘Scholar of Sin’ will be reborn from the mists of history! We will all live forever in his light!”

They talked and talked, and it all came back to the Evil god… So, did your god tell you that two people had infiltrated, and one of them is right here with you?

“Shadow Walker,” who was following behind them, remained silent. After praising the “Scholar of Sin,” the two heretics didn’t say another word, but quickened their pace. Within a minute, they reached the sacrificial grounds.

It was a cave. The walls were covered with the marks of hacked stone, clearly dug out by hand. Weak air currents flowed through some imperceptible cracks in the walls. Torches and lamps were hung on the walls. On the ground were more than a dozen headless corpses. A foul stench emanated from them… “Shadow Walker” surveyed the cave and saw six living people at the edge.

Two small children were huddled together, one comforting the other. An old man sat with his eyes closed, leaning against the wall, his hands clenched tightly, indicating that he wasn’t calm. Two women, about twenty years old, were huddled around the old man, their eyes filled with fear as they looked at the heretics who had entered the cave. The last person was a “Lost One” wearing a white mask. His eyes, visible beneath the mask, seemed to look towards them.

“Shadow Walker’s” eyes narrowed. He made his decision, silently drawing his dagger and approaching the two heretics.

“Let’s see who’s arrived.” The Lost One, whose voice was odd, said. “Two conduits who can’t be classified as either men or women! Feeling impatient? Missing my toy? Too bad. I haven’t eaten for three days. I’m not up for it!”

The heretic on the right stepped over the sacrificed bodies, not angry, but smiling,

“Wait until you embrace the Lord’s embrace, offer the light within your skull, and then I’ll gladly take your toy and make it a daily item.”

The Lost One immediately fell silent.

The heretic on the left then grabbed the two young women, tore their already ragged clothes, and roughly examined their bodies. Then he slapped the old man, knocking him to the ground. The old man’s forehead hit the rock, causing him to cry out in pain.

After confirming that the three were still alive, he went to the two children who were huddled together, tearing the arm of the child who was trying to protect the other. Then, by the light of the torch, he looked at the trembling child and saw a festering wound on his face. Yellow pus was oozing from the wound. And the child’s body temperature was abnormally high…

This sacrifice had attempted suicide, but failed, and the untreated wound had caused a high fever.

The heretic thought for a moment and decided to tell his senior about this situation. He would use this child as the next sacrifice. After all, the Scholar of Sin didn’t want the light from a dead person’s skull.

But when he turned around, he didn’t see his senior, but a short figure shrouded in a chaotic jumble of colors and fog, holding a blood-stained dagger… His senior was lying on the ground, eyes wide open, his hands tightly clutching at his neck, but he couldn’t stop the blood from gushing out. A gurgling sound came from his mouth, and then silence.

Fear and the unknown instantly filled the heretic’s mind, and he tried to beg for mercy. But “Shadow Walker” covered his mouth. He couldn’t make a sound.

Unable to see the desperate look in his eyes, feeling only the blunt sensation of the dagger cutting through flesh and the warmth in his left hand gradually fading, “Shadow Walker” silently ended the heretic’s life.

The Lost One hadn’t reacted until after the attack. Then he cried out joyfully,

“Kid! I knew you’d come and save me!”
