Chapter 1: The Lost Girl

Chapter 1: The Lost Girl

Amid the darkness that cloaked the village, I leaned over the edge of the rooftop, eyes focused for any sign of our target. "Remy, do you see something?" The night air hung thick with anticipation.

"It's very dark tonight; I can't see anything," Remy replied, his voice carrying the weight of the nocturnal obscurity.

As I continued scanning the surroundings, my focus shifted abruptly to the village square, where a lone figure emerged. "Hey, Remy, do you see that?!" I exclaimed, pointing towards the mysterious silhouette. Remy followed my gaze, nodding in acknowledgment. Upon closer inspection, we discerned a little girl, her attire stained and clutching an apple. "What is she doing here this late?" I mused aloud, a foreboding feeling settling in.

"Isn't our target supposed to be around here?" Remy whispered, his words a reminder of the imminent danger lurking in the shadows. Realization struck, and urgency compelled me. "We need to find him ASAP," I whispered back, a shared determination flashing between us.

The girl continued her solitary journey, nearing the square's edge. "Should we check it out?" Remy suggested with unwavering resolve. I nodded in agreement; the need to intervene palpable.

Seconds later, she halted before a foreboding alley. Time seemed to stand still as the atmosphere grew tense. The apple slipped from her grasp, echoing through the silence, and she turned, on the precipice of flight. A sinister hand emerged from the darkness, dragging her back into the shadows.

"HHAAAAAA....." The scream echoed briefly before vanishing. Remy and I exchanged looks, a shared understanding fueling our instincts.

In an instant, we traversed the rooftops, leaping with purpose. "Are we going in?" I questioned, a surge of adrenaline pulsing through me.

"Really, Meo? Of course, he just took that little girl! Let's go!" Remy's urgency spurred us into action.

I slapped myself, a jolt of focus coursing through me. "Let's go!"

Together, we dove into the alley. Remy charging forward on foot, and me climbing the side of a house, eyes peeled for any trace of the abductor and his captive.

A swift look to my right revealed the abductor, sprinting with the girl slung over his shoulder. "Remy!! He's over there!" I bellowed, pointing urgently in the direction of the fleeing figure. In an instant, Remy locked onto my signal, sprinting toward the first corner with unrivaled speed.

As he reached the corner, he effortlessly jumped over a fence blocking his path. The chase intensified as Remy spotted the abductor and the kidnapped child ahead. I continued my rooftop pursuit, leaping from building to building to maintain pace. However, mid-air, a revelation struck me, and I stopped immediately.

In that fleeting moment, I notice a quicker route to intercept the abductor. Without hesitation, I executed a sharp turn to the right. In response to my change of direction, my brother's voice rang out, "Where are you going!?" I shot back, "Trust me!"

Jumping across one final rooftop, I descended with haste, sliding down the sloping surface, hoping my plan works. My descent was met by a free fall, landing with a resounding clash atop the abductor and the child. The impact reverberated through us as we collided with the ground below.

The abductor groaned, "ugghh," swiftly rising to a kneeling position. In response, I scrambled to my feet, the child caught in the middle of our clash. Above the child, my gaze locked onto the abductor, revealing a woman clad in sleek, obsidian attire. She quickly pulled up her hood, concealing her face, though I already seen her beautiful, pale face, framed by blonde locks and piercing blue eyes.

Snatching the child protectively, I assured her, "Don't worry, you're safe." I positioned myself between her and the mysterious woman. The woman, now on her feet, cast a wary glance around her, her fear palpable. As she turned to flee, a voice cut through the tension, "Where do you think you're going?" It was Remy, emerging from the shadows of dark alley.

"You came!" I exclaimed, a surge of relief coursing through me as I shielded the child from harm. The woman, caught between us, muttered a resigned "shit." Remy advanced slowly, his voice resonating with a stern determination, "We can do this easy or hard. It's your choice."

After a contemplative pause, the woman made her choice, hurtling towards Remy, ready for a confrontation. In a blur of motion, she swung at him, but Remy, sidestepped the attack. His hand met her neck in a swift, expertly executed slap, rendering her unconscious in an instant.

"Phew, you got her," I sighed in relief, the fear of her escaping and losing the bounty almost killed me.

"Of course, I got her, Meo. Don't underestimate me," Remy asserted confidently. I rolled my eyes in response, saying, "Yeah... yeah... Let's just get her and head back to Nyhar before anyone else sees us."

Turning around while still kneeling, I faced the little girl and assured her, "Hey, you're safe now. You can go back home." As I stood up, she swiftly ran back to the square, heading home.

I turned towards my brother as he called out, "Come help me pick her up so we can put her on the horse." Closing the distance, Remy and I carefully lifted the unconscious woman, cradling her form, and gently placed her over the back of the horse. We then mounted the horse, ready to go back to Nyhar.

While guiding the horse through the darkened landscape, Remy interjected with a hint of concern, "You do know the way back, right? It's very dark, and it's a day's worth of travel." I met his gaze confidently, replying, "Don't underestimate me." A shared understanding passed between us, and we both burst into laughter.
