Not Quite A Fit

April 1998
People were strange and silly, Dawn thought to herself as she ate her lunch - a pear and two sandwiches. They always tried to fit in where they didn’t want to be, with their fake and awkward smiles.
Maybe, in a different world, that would have been her. But it wasn’t.
A shriek was heard from across the playground, causing the young girl to wince at its sheer loudness.

A gaggle of girls flounced past her, giggling, and talking amongst themselves. They barely spared Dawn a glance. She was invisible, as far as they were concerned, and Dawn was perfectly content with letting it stay that way. Before her parents had gotten divorced and Mom had decided to move them to Sunnydale, the boys at her old school had always picked on her. Followed her around in the playground, calling her names, pulling on her braids, or shoving her aside as they sped down the hallways after class.
Things in Sunnydale were different. If you weren’t cool, you were nothing. Simple as that.
She just had the luxury of being ignored.
As she watched the other children – shrieking and laughing uproariously – play in the park, she choked on the sudden feeling of despair and aloneness that threatened to overwhelm her. Her throat tightened, and, not for the first time in her life, she choked back her tears.
She bit into the sandwich.
