Arc #4: The Sultan of Darshuun, Chapter Twenty—Announcement

CHAPTER TWENTY—ANNOUNCEMENT

Shai’na was deep in conversation with satrap Junra’s wife when a loud gong was sounded, causing her to lift her gaze from the woman’s face toward where the sound came from.

Loud at first, the sound shimmered through the air as a woman in black robes that billowed down to her heels stepped up to the throne, and without sitting in it, turned.

“Greetings, esteemed guests!”

Narrowing her eyes to see the woman clearly, Shai’na listened with intent as the other guests turned and regarded her. Shai’na felt this announcement would presage the arrival of Darius himself.

“I am Kalina, head mistress of the palace.” She glanced about the room, but keeping her eyes mostly to the area directly below the dais. “You have all been invited here by our glorious sultan so that he might have your apt attention for an important announcement. He will arrive soon, and with him”—her face lit up, though in a strange way—“he will reveal a secret, one which has been rumored about for decades! Until then, enjoy yourselves and the festivities.”

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Gongs from about the room, hidden from sight, were sung and the music resumed, heightening to a more aggressive tempo as dancing girls and other performers with snakes coiled about their bodies wielded daggers and fire. They spread out into the room, causing the guests to shrink back with sudden fright before laughing in exultation.

Servants appeared, carrying more wine and everyone cheered.

“Gods,” Shai’na said. “I must say, I am quite intrigued!”

“Indeed,” Salina said. Junra’s wife, after watching for a moment, added, “Whatever could this secret be, I wonder?”

“Oh…” Shai’na said distractedly, “I have an idea about that.”

Salina laughed. “You must tell, Shai’na. I command you.”

Laughing, Shai’na wagged a finger at the princess. “You may be a princess, my dear, but your husband the satrap does not rule over this city!”

“You smug little vizier!” Salina accused with a smile.

“Come, let’s have more wine and await the sultan’s arrival!”
