Prologue
“Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another.” - Albert Einstein.
This principle, the law of conservation, is a cornerstone of physics. Yet a deeper, lesser-known truth lies beyond this law: it applies not only to energy but also to a second, elusive force that embodies life itself. This force, known as pneuma—the breath of life—transforms matter into living beings. Like energy, pneuma can neither be created nor destroyed; it shifts and evolves from one form to another.
Just as energy manifests as light or matter, pneuma spans a spectrum from pure and radiant to dark and complex. Following a kind of supersymmetry, where there is life, there is anti-life. The simplest anti-life forms are viruses—strange entities that consume life yet bear none of its qualities, existing solely to replicate at the expense of their hosts. But more powerful creatures also exist, devouring life itself, haunting the world in both subtle and monstrous forms. These rare but potent beings are born of corrupted or tainted pneuma, from near-invisible threats to vast monstrosities, driven by an insatiable hunger for life.
All living things possess pneuma, the essence that makes them alive. This force has been called many names over time—spirit, soul, consciousness—yet all refer to the same presence, animating and sustaining life. The origins of pneuma, like energy, are mysterious. It spreads evenly across the cosmos, yet certain beings naturally possess or accumulate far more than others. For some species, this abundance brings long life or immense size; in humans, it grants superhuman abilities.

Those with extraordinary pneuma may possess unmatched strength, intellect, or agility. The most gifted can perform miraculous feats: heal the sick, transcend gravity, or command elements. Some are born with this power, while others cultivate it through will and discipline. Throughout history, such individuals—whether acting openly or in secret—have altered the world, their pneuma casting long shadows over fate.
Yet pneuma is as volatile as it is powerful. Those who wield it face risks as great as the abilities it grants. To manipulate pneuma requires discipline and intent, for without control, it can consume or corrupt its user. Like a flame, pneuma must be mastered, or it will burn. Many who have tried to bend pneuma to their will have instead been broken by it, lost to madness or the allure of unchecked power.
Despite the risks, humanity’s hunger for power remains insatiable. Those with abundant pneuma are revered—or feared. In ancient times, they were worshiped as gods or wizards or condemned as demons or warlocks. Legends formed around them, woven into the mythos of kingdoms and empires. Some established secret schools or orders where pneumatic techniques were studied, practiced, and harnessed, and where techniques were passed down through oaths and rituals, hidden from outsiders.
But over time, the balance has begun to shift. In recent years, pneuma has become both less elusive and more coveted. Advances in knowledge, information sharing, and the development of new pneumatic techniques, have unlocked possibilities once thought to be legend. This emergence has drawn the attention of governments, scientists, and rulers alike, who seek to use those proficient in these abilities for good, for conquest, or out of fear. And as this unseen force stirs in the hearts of those aware of it, shadow wars are waged, alliances form and dissolve, and secrets are guarded or stolen.
The only problem is, no one even suspects pneuma exists. Life is just a fact of the universe and some people just so happen to be able to shoot fireballs from their hands.
