Chapter 2: A Small Program

"Congratulations, Host! You have mastered all the code in MS-DOS version 3.3!"

"Congratulations, Host! You have acquired basic C programming skills. With continued practice, your skills will rapidly improve!"

A system notification flashed before Zhang Zhipeng's eyes.

He felt something magical happen in his brain.

Although he had never studied programming before, he now had extensive experience in programming with the C language.

This feeling was truly incredible.

Zhang Zhipeng felt a surge of excitement.

So, after all this time, reverse-engineering MS-DOS actually helped him master programming skills?

After a brief moment of thought, he began writing a small piece of software directly in C language, with just a few dozen lines of code. This software was linked to two small games, Super Mario and Contra.

Whenever a student using the computer opened one of these games, the small software would be triggered.

The software would then automatically pop up a warning message: "Playing games during class is prohibited. Please close this immediately!"

It would likely startle any student who saw it.

The computers in the computer lab were connected by a local area network. Zhang Zhipeng set up the software to automatically replicate itself onto all the other computers in the lab once they were turned on.

Well, wasn’t this just a simple virus?

Of course, this virus wouldn't cause any damage to the computer systems.

Zhang Zhipeng carefully reviewed the small program he had written, made a few simple modifications, and tested it several times, ensuring it popped up smoothly.

The biggest change he made was this: whenever a student opened one of the games during a computer class, the teacher's computer screen would also receive a notification, specifying exactly which computer was involved.

This could be considered a way of helping the teacher maintain classroom discipline.

He just wondered if the students who slacked off in class would hold a grudge against him because of it.

"Congratulations, Host! You have acquired intermediate C programming skills!"

The system rewarded him once again.

Zhang Zhipeng felt he had gained a deeper understanding of C programming.

This sense of achievement made his mind even more excited.

Just as he was preparing to delve further into his studies, the preparatory bell rang outside.

It was almost time for class.

The computer lab Zhang Zhipeng managed was the busiest in the Aeronautical Engineering Department.

Students from various grades and majors used it in rotation, leaving almost no idle time.

He quickly shut down the computer he was using and began preparing for the incoming students.

As the computer lab administrator, Zhang Zhipeng didn’t have much to do while the teacher supervised the students during class.

However, he couldn’t stray too far and could only stay in the small office nearby.

Zhao Min was a teacher in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Her teaching and research office was responsible for basic computer education throughout the university.

This involved supervising students during their computer classes, explaining basic computer knowledge and theories, and teaching students how to use computers proficiently.

She had graduated from Xidian University, which was diagonally across the street.

After graduation, she came to teach at Northwestern Polytechnical University, where she had been for two years now.

She was 1.65 meters tall, with a slender figure and attractive features, making her one of the most beautiful teachers at the university.

Ten minutes before class, Zhao Min arrived at the computer lab.

As she entered, Zhang Zhipeng happened to be standing at the classroom door.

As the computer lab administrator, Zhang Zhipeng naturally saw Zhao Min quite often.

But it was usually just polite greetings, without much deeper interaction.

In fact, Zhao Min felt a bit uncomfortable around Zhang Zhipeng.

She had heard about his past: he used to be a small-time troublemaker and had once been detained for fighting.

A man like that was better kept at a distance.

"Good afternoon, Ms. Zhao!" Zhang Zhipeng smiled and nodded, greeting her.

Zhao Min nodded and replied, "Good afternoon, Mr. Zhang!"

She walked into the classroom and went to the desk where the teacher usually sat. Zhang Zhipeng shrugged; he could sense that Zhao Min was somewhat wary of him.

It seemed that the previous owner of this body really had a bit of a bad reputation.

He then returned to the small office nearby, planning to sit down and read for a while.

He had borrowed two introductory books on aviation knowledge from the school library, intending to catch up on his studies.

Meanwhile, Zhao Min turned on the teacher's computer and began preparing for today's lesson.

Today, she was going to teach a few key DOS commands.

Students began to trickle into the classroom.

Zhao Min was teaching second-year students.

In fact, these students had only completed their first year of college.

However, they were no longer as compliant as freshmen, and some of them were already getting a bit unruly.

The class began.

Zhao Min was at the front, operating the computer while explaining the lesson to the students.

Just about six or seven minutes into the lesson, a small dialog box suddenly popped up on her computer screen.

"Friendly reminder! The student at station 25 has opened Super Mario!"

Zhao Min was taken aback.

What is this?

How did this message suddenly pop up?

Clearly, someone had created a small program on the computer.

This program was linked to the computer’s games, and whenever a student opened a game, it would immediately issue a warning.

Even though Zhao Min was a graduate of Xidian University, she couldn't create such a program.

So, who had tampered with the computer?

Could it be a prank by one of the students?

Over the past couple of years, Zhao Min had been the target of quite a few student jokes.

She glanced at the student sitting at station 25.

Station 25 was at the back of the computer lab.

It was occupied by a buzz-cut boy, but Zhao Min couldn't see his face due to the computer monitor.

Still, Zhao Min lightly cleared her throat and said, "A warning to the student at station 25. Please pay attention during class! No playing mini-games on the side!"

The boy at station 25 was named Fang Qingping, a student majoring in flight control engineering design.

Fang Qingping was quite smart and liked to figure things out on his own. He was proficient in both software and hardware.

He already knew everything Zhao Min was teaching, so he felt there was no harm in not listening.

He decided to open Super Mario and play for a bit.

However, just as he opened the game, it suddenly closed on its own, and a dialog box popped up: "No mini-games allowed during class. Please close immediately!"

Fang Qingping was stunned.

Wow! This is way too advanced!

Whoever designed this program must be incredibly skilled. It even prevented him from playing the game!

Fang Qingping was momentarily flustered.

Then, Zhao Min's warning came through.

Fang Qingping rubbed his nose and thought, it seems he had underestimated this pretty teacher. She must be quite impressive to design such a complex program to monitor the students.

Fang Qingping had no choice but to stand up and say, "Sorry, teacher! I was just a bit curious..."

"But you're really amazing. The software you designed is unbelievably good!"
