Prologue

In the beginning, there was the Abyss. An endless void filled with potential. As the eons passed, a being emerged; his resurgence generated a tremendous explosion that formed the cosmos. Glittering stars and planets gleamed against the infinite blackness of the Abyss.

The being grew lonely; gathering stardust and light he shaped one to be his equal, to be his brother. The need arose for names, the created being was named Lucifer, the morning star, and the being that emerged would be El Shaddai, the Lord.

The brothers, El Shaddai and Lucifer lived among the stars in peace and contentment for millennia. They spoke to each other about crafting a masterpiece. A work of art to be known until the end of time and beyond, and so they created networks of planets, galaxies, universes and so much more. Such glorious creations were meant to be populated and monitored. The brothers created the sentient races and the angels to guide them.

Imperfections built into the sentients; traits originally thought to be endearing led to chaos, destruction, and planet ending wars. The brothers would have to start over, and over, each time thinking “This time, will be right, this time will be perfect.” This caused a great rift between Lucifer and El Shaddai. Lucifer believed that mankind should be left to its devices, allowed to flourish, or damn themselves, while the Lord believed that mankind when they died, would reside in a paradise prison of his own making, not allowed to reincarnate so that when man died out, the next sentient race could prevail. The prison was called Heaven. Mortal souls, once freed from their bodies would be pulled back and manifest as the soul’s final incarnation, free to wander and consort with their deceased family and ancestors.

Lucifer was furious. He assembled twelve of his most trusted and powerful angels and stormed El Shaddai’s palace in Heaven. Their battle rent stars from the sky, wiping out entire galaxies at once. Lucifer, having been created by El Shaddai, was unable to best his brother, he and his surviving angels were cast down in a cataclysm of flame and spite.

Lucifer’s love for his brother had been broken, the love for their creations, however, was not. Lucifer, with one final flourish of divine power, created a realm of his own. Here, souls would be called as well. The souls of the wicked and the damned would answer the call and be held until their evil could be burned away, freed to reincarnate, and free to spite El Shaddai.

The Lord’s angels swiftly reclaimed the first waves of souls set free from the realm made by Lucifer, they still carried hints of divinity. Evolution was required. The divinity that once granted Lucifer such strength only made his efforts that much easier to undo. The Abyss had to have what Lucifer needed, something to give him the edge on his brother. The Abyss required payment, and so the created brother surrendered his name. From the Abyss sprang knowledge of the infernal and unholy, and so too came the brother’s new title.

Satan, the Crimson Dragon, emerged from the Abyss wielding power unknown and returned to his realm. Flame poured over and through the realm, the fallen angels were twisted and became demons of the highest class, Archdukes. The sins of mankind, once purged from their twisted souls became low-born demons, each taking the form of their chief sin. The abdiel were forged out of the sin of envy; the low-born or garzok; from gluttony; the okan from sloth; the succubus and incubus from lust; tigok from pride; the ustraad from wrath; all of them terrible in their own right. Satan’s realm became known as Hell, hordes of demons were made from the sins of the damned in the process of redeeming them, they would make up the body of the horde that Satan would use to crush his brother.

The war between the two has waged since what some perceive to be the beginning of time. El Shaddai has attempted to purge mankind from the world several times, Satan has been made the Devil, a figure to be feared in the Lord’s monotheistic religion. Mankind is in their third Dark Age, a time of swords, steel, war, and inexplicable supernatural phenomena. The war between Satan and El Shaddai has broken through into the land of mortals. As the kingdoms of man fall, the veil between Heaven, Hell, and Earth thins. Strife begets strife, and one angel believes that he has finally figured out how to bring the bloody conflict to an end, once and for all.
