Chapter 21: Cooking Catastrophe

The kitchen was bustling with the usual activity—pots clanging, spoons stirring, and the aroma of freshly baked bread wafting through the air. Amidst this controlled chaos, there was one spot of particular concern to the head cook and his staff: Lilian's cooking station. The head cook, a burly man named Gustav, eyed it warily, a bead of sweat forming on his brow.

Lilian stood at her station, a determined look on her face as she attempted to make cookies. Beside her, Celeste, her dragon in cat form, batted at a rolling pin with mild interest. The other cooks stole nervous glances her way, whispering amongst themselves. They had grown accustomed to her frequent visits, but the results of her culinary endeavors were always... unpredictable.

"Alright, Celeste, we can do this!" Lilian declared, her ruby-red eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. She scooped a spoonful of dough onto the baking sheet, which already bore the evidence of several previous, failed attempts.

Celeste meowed in agreement, though his focus was clearly on the doughy mess that had just plopped onto the counter. He pawed at it, managing to get some dough stuck to his fur.

Gustav approached cautiously. "Miss Lilian, might I suggest adding a bit more flour? The consistency seems a tad off."

Lilian smiled brightly at him. "Thank you, Gustav! I'll give it a try."

She dumped a generous handful of flour into the bowl, creating a small cloud of white powder that enveloped her and Celeste. The dragon-cat sneezed, sending a puff of flour into the air, and Lilian giggled.

As they continued their haphazard cookie-making, Lilian hummed a cheerful tune. Despite the impending disaster, she was having the time of her life. Flour dusted her cheeks, and bits of dough clung to her hair, but she was undeterred.

"These cookies are going to be amazing, Celeste! Just wait and see," she said, though the burnt batches on the counter told a different story.

Celeste meowed again, this time more insistently, as if trying to convey that perhaps cookies weren't their strong suit. He pawed at the next batch that Lilian placed in the oven, a burnt scent already emanating from within.

"Maybe we need a new recipe," Lilian mused, flipping through a cookbook with flour-coated fingers. "Or maybe more sugar?"

The head cook sighed but couldn't help but smile at Lilian's infectious enthusiasm. "Miss Lilian, why don't we try something simpler? Perhaps some fresh fruit slices or a salad?"

Lilian pouted playfully. "But I really want to make cookies, Gustav. It's a matter of pride now!"

Gustav chuckled. "Very well, Miss Lilian. But if you need any assistance, please don't hesitate to ask."

As the afternoon wore on, the kitchen filled with laughter and the occasional yelp as Lilian pulled another tray of burnt cookies from the oven. The cooks, though wary, found themselves chuckling along with her. Even Gustav couldn't suppress a grin as he watched her determinedly try to salvage each batch.

Unbeknownst to Lilian, her father and brothers were busily preparing for her upcoming birthday. They had sworn the kitchen staff to secrecy, ensuring that the preparations remained a surprise. The entire capital seemed to be in on it, with plans for grand festivities already underway.

Sebastian, Nathaniel, and Dorian had each taken on different tasks. Sebastian was overseeing the decorations, Nathaniel was in charge of the entertainment, and Dorian had taken it upon himself to ensure that Lilian received the most beautiful dress imaginable. Their father was orchestrating the entire event, determined to make it a birthday she would never forget.

But for now, Lilian remained blissfully unaware, focused solely on her cookie catastrophe.

"I think these ones might actually be good!" she exclaimed, pulling out yet another tray. Unfortunately, the cookies were once again charred around the edges, but she didn't seem to mind. "We just need to perfect the baking time, right, Celeste?"

Celeste gave a half-hearted meow, clearly skeptical.

As the sun began to set, Lilian finally decided to call it a day. The kitchen was a mess, with flour and dough splattered everywhere. She looked around, a satisfied smile on her face. Despite the less-than-stellar results, she had enjoyed herself immensely.

"Thank you for letting me use the kitchen, Gustav," she said, wiping her flour-coated hands on her apron. "I'll clean up, I promise!"

Gustav waved her off. "No need, Miss Lilian. We can handle it. You go and rest. You've worked hard today."

Lilian beamed at him. "You're the best, Gustav!"

With that, she skipped out of the kitchen, Celeste trotting along behind her, leaving a trail of floury paw prints in his wake.

Back in her room, Lilian collapsed onto her bed with a groan. "Cooking is hard work, Celeste," she said, her voice muffled by the pillow.

Celeste leaped onto the bed, curling up on her back with a contented purr. Lilian chuckled, reaching back to scratch him behind the ears.

As she drifted off to sleep, the entire household buzzed with the secret preparations for her birthday. Plans were made, decorations were finalized, and a sense of excitement filled the air. Little did Lilian know the burnt cookies were just the beginning of the surprises in store for her.
