The Everyday of the Everyday Eyeball

Omniscience is hard work. Grildo would know, being an Observer after all. For the uninitiated, an Observer is someone whose only job is to watch and keep track of a group of people and make reports on their activities, inclinations, interests and all the other mundanities of the day to day. The reason why he - and others like him - have to do this mind numbing task every day is so that the people they watch can become better at whatever it is they want to do. How that works however, is a mystery to Grildo. What he does know however, is that the only civilization that the gods told the Observers not to watch died out within 50 years. That story is told to every new Observer to hammer home the importance of their job and prevent any dereliction of duty - lest the lives of those they neglect meet an early end. Grildo would never do anything like that of course, One side effect of watching someone’s every waking moment is you become pretty attached to them. Grildo would never say that though, he knew what happened to those who got too attached and did things they weren’t supposed to. Every Observer knew not to give any inclination of that lest they get the attention of the higher ups, though Grildo assumed it was a bit more common to get invested in the lives of the civilians than the supervisors seemed to think. Grildo wouldn’t say that either.

‘Speaking of,’ Grildo thought, hearing the bell that announced it was time for his shift in the cube. He pushed himself away from the table he was eating breakfast and stood up from the chair. He picked the coat off the backside of said chair as his beautiful wife almost danced into the room. Flashing her a grin, he wandered over and gave her a kiss.

“If you keep that up you’re gonna be late for work one day,” She said.

“I’m sure the boy’s would understand,” He replied, giving her a wink.

“Oh hush you! Get going already you tease,”

He laughed but acquiesced, going for the bowler hat hung next to the door.

“I’ll see you in about… 5 days? Yeah that's right,” Her response was a roll of the eyes.

“Dinner will be ready at 6:30 and you will be there,” He flashed her another grin.

“Yes Ma’am” He opened the door and walked out to a muttering of “... one of these days Grildo Zeldath…”

He walked the few blocks between his appointed housing and the office building he worked at with a large grin, so he only barely noticed the people clutching their purses as they walked by a goblin. ‘Today’s gonna be a good day’ he thought.

“Hey Zeldath, you ready for the new assignments?” Grildo looked over to his boss and gave a nod.

“Yes sir, excited to see some new faces,” His boss laughed a little at that.

“Good, I learned who your assignments are just now, and it looks like an Orc, a Naga, an Elf, and two Human’s. None from the same world so you won’t have to watch the same thing twice,” His boss gave a wink. Grildo laughed but internally was concerned. ‘So many people and none of them are even close to the types of cultures I was watching before, are they testing me?’

Grildo opened the door to his cube and stepped inside. It was much cozier than his last one was, with a leather couch instead of an office chair to watch the film on. It seems getting a promotion - especially to a new department - came with more benefits than just new assignments. Taking a moment to familiarize himself with the room before turning on the time dilation, turning one dial to 5 and the other to 8 respectfully. He wasn’t familiar with this model so he was glad he grabbed the manual pamphlet so he could understand that the left dial was how many people he was watching and the right one for how long his shift was, at least to people on the outside. A screen above both dials loaded briefly before showing the number 80 and an option for yes and no. He tapped yes and stepped away from the console when he couldn’t hear outside the room any longer, which indicated that the magic had worked. Walking over to the file on a table in front of the couch and opening it he saw a picture and description of the people he was going to be watching for the foreseeable future. After seating himself on the couch he saw there was an Orc, a Naga, an Elf, and two Humans just like his boss said. None of their pictures stood out to him all that much so he picked one at random and started casting the spell to monitor them with the help of a bracelet on his left arm. He settled into the comfortable leather and prepared to see what the male human Daril Hadwyn was all about.
