Ch.6

Derek stared at the glowing words in the air blankly for a second before shaking his head and focusing. From what the thing said this was important and he needed to focus.

Available Classes:

Noble

Linguist

Soldier

Bard

Grifter

He obviously had to take Soldier, but what should he take along with it? The system talked about fusion classes, and he could imagine fusions such as warrior king, spy, jester, etc, the only class that really appealed to him was Noble. Because come on, who didn’t want to live like a king?

New Skill Choice available!

Baron of War; Chain of Command: Gain limited telepathic communication with Soldiers under your command within the range of 1 mile. Skill may be upgraded.

Baron of Trade; Wagons on Wagons: Gain the ability to enlarge the interiors of vehicles by 5 percent. Skill can be upgraded.

Baron of Intrigue; Ears Everywhere: Gain the ability to enchant an object as a personal listening device.

Suddenly Derek was very happy he took Noble. Telepathy and extra-dimensional spaces was some crazy magic right from the get go. The choices seemed more like skill trees from games he had played than a singular skill. While it was fun just imagining what each would do, it was clear which one would synergize best and continue to provide benefits.

Partial experience in drills verified.

His hopes went up when he saw the partial experience, but the only thing that followed was the list of his enhancements, which were all zero so far. He wondered briefly how those could be raised. No way to know for now. Once the words stopped appearing, he took his hand off the slate.

Samuel and Derek both looked at each other and grinned.

“Something cool huh?” Samuel asked

“Let’s just say that I am officially of highah stahnding than a peasant such as yourself.” Derek replied, putting on a foppish accent.

“Well I-” he was cut off as their instructor, entirely unamused by their unintelligible babble, ordered them to follow again and walked out of the room. They were taken back to the room with the cages, but apparently their obedience so far had paid some dividends as she simply left them there after teaching them the word for no with the chalkboard, then ordered them to “No follow.”

Pretty soon after they were brought some water in wooden cups and a small round loaf each of rather hard bread. They told each other about their experiences with the magical slate and their subsequent decisions. It was obvious that there were some slight differences in the ways their only classes with levels functioned, but what those meant or why they had no idea. Both were extremely excited to find out however.

“How did you meet the requirements for a Noble anyway?” Samuel asked.

“If I had to guess its probably because whatever AI or whatever is behind the classes considers even our rather poor-middle class lives in America as high class compared to whatever the norm is here. It makes sense, considering that technology is clearly medieval, and there is some sort of upheaval going on. You didn’t get it though because reading books is not participating in society.”

“I’ll have you know I talked to plenty of people about those books.”

“One, you mean one person.”

Finally they tried piecing together the meaning of some of the words they had heard. Samuel had an excellent memory, and Derek was pretty good at reading body language for guesses. They made little progress, but with some base vocabulary provided by the instructor lady they managed some extrapolation. Samuel was rather daunted by the prospect of learning whatever grammar governed this language.
