Midnight Chapter

??:??

----------------------------------------

Punch after gruesome punch, Julia taints her black gloves in putrid blood; the single man that has caused her such headaches tonight stays chained down on a metal chair in front of her. His wounds barely being able to heal before newer ones are inflicted, and the process loops.

"I'll ask you one last time, Doctor: What were the expectations you had settled on when you began experimenting with your victims? Why go after Olivia Rivers?" Mercilessly, she grabs the hurt man by the neck and defers yet another punch to his sides, expertly making mashed potatoes of his kidneys to the point it is clear this isn't her first rodeo. "I want to know what you were planning to make."

"At this point, it is pointless to ask such questions, so don't waste your breath. Your people have been very insistent on stopping my experiments, and congratulations! An innocent's death now lies in your hands. She had all the potential to be more." The man utters these words in hopes of inflicting some pain on his torturer, but her indifferent reaction ends up piquing his interest. "Unless, of course, that isn't the case. The experiment was a success, wasn't it, Miss Torturer? Olivia Rivers lives, and she has become exactly what I've made her."

A ghoulish grin takes over his face, big enough to distort his face into one of a monster. "Oh, you don't understand how special you are for being able to witness the birth of a new creature. I'll tell you this: She's the next step in our evolution—both human and not-human."

"Tell me how to revert what you did to that poor girl before I'm forced to remove your other arm—slowly."

"That's the beauty of it, Torturer; there isn't a way to revert nature when it sets its course. What's done is done unless she dies—an option you aren't very fond of, I can see." Doctor Verso rests his back further on the metal chair, relaxing despite the many wounds he carries that still have a hard time to heal. "With my experiment being a success, I'm a made man. Complete and ultimately satisfied. Do your worst if you may—any pain you cause me is but a detail now that I know I did humanity a favor."

Not satisfied, Julia punches him yet again, this time with enough strength to make him fall on his side, still strapped to the chair.

"You'll talk, Doctor, sooner or later. From this moment on, you are admitted into the cage; I'll make sure to put on a good word for you and arrange a cozy cell with a nice inmate. You'll love the new faces you'll find there, and they'll love you."

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

The woman tries to hide her anger, to keep her composure, yet all of the stress brought by this situation reaches a boiling point as she storms out of the interrogation room, signaling for some of the security to get him far, far away for the moment being.

In the observation room, Julia starts to take off her bloody gloves while watching the man being tranquilized by the guards and being packed for transportation through the one-way mirror. A click of her tongue seems to summon the active presence of Taruah, who seemingly waited for the opportunity to speak.

"Shitty day, huh? I don't envy you." She steps close to the quiet figure of Julia, joining her in watching the scene unfold. "There's already been some talk about what happened to your girl; good thing that what I just heard hasn't reached them."

It takes a moment of silence for Taruah to ask the one-million-dollar question, and when she does, she's unable to hide how absurd it sounds. "So, is it true? Your girl transformed into something not even the almighty upstairs knows about."

"Yavia just began working on it; I can't say anything for certain until she has something." An uneasy face rises from within, just a droplet of the many troubled thoughts brewing in her mind. "She was bitten by Colette, and even so, her blood hasn't shown any of the usual signs of lycanthropy; her body will take some time to heal completely because of that, so we won't know anything about it for a long while."

"That sounds complicated to deal with. I'm sure they won't be happy with what happened since she's a product of an illegal experiment; they'll surely bring their rulebook to the table. They might even consider killing her." Taruah says these harsh words without holding back, knowing them to be true; she then crosses her arms and looks curious to Julia. "What's your game plan?"

"I'm working on it, but I won't abandon my puppy just because she's a little different now." Showing her true strength, Julia throws her troubles away and focuses on what she can do instead of what she can't, concentrating on smiling and keeping a positive mindset. "You know me; I can be very stubborn when I get attached."

"Very well said; remember that you have a sister-in-arms in case you need backup." Taruah lazily rests an arm around the woman's shoulder, feeling the woman lean into the contact more; that's enough to get an eager smile on her lips. "Come on, let's bounce. I so happen to have a bottle of fine whisky waiting for us under my desk, a gift from an ex-cadet of mine. Not that I have much free time on my hands, but I can accompany you for a few shots."

"If you're being this nice, it can only mean you want something out of this." Julia takes a good moment looking at the woman before feeling a wandering hand sending shivers up her spine, crossing the middle of her back slowly and intimately. "If we are doing the same as last time, I won't settle for less than a comfortable bed and a massage beforehand."

"Sure, whatever you need to get handsy tonight, princess."

As Taruah nods her head and moves away, wearing a small, successful smile, Julia starts to trail right behind, instantly. Both of them ready to drown their headaches in whiskey and find comfort in each other's embrace.
