Chapter 6 - The Red Notebook

Chapter 6 - The Red Notebook

Hunger woke Toni up from his nap. He slowly got up from his bed as his stomach was rumbling. He went to the kitchen, made some tea, and drank it with bread. His belly was temporarily satisfied. Happy to be finally able to concentrate on other things besides food, Toni went back to his room.

He thought about his attempt at the Traveler’s Formula and the unexpected result he had. He was convinced the mysterious space held more secrets. Part of him wanted to give in to his impatience and recite the incantation again to be transported there. However, he decided against it for the moment. Doing things in the space consumed his stamina. He needed to be careful. He had no idea what would happen if his stamina got depleted while there.

Toni put the thought aside and began pondering on his next move. The unplanned meeting in his Domain resulted in him gaining valuable information. The King and the Bishop provided some insight into the secrets of this world. He had already realized it would take something extraordinary if he were to go back to his world. Therefore, the knowledge of Genomers offered a path for him. He wanted to become a Genomer. The idea of possessing special abilities and powers excited him. However, his true motivation was the hope to find a way to go back home.

According to the Bishop, one needed to add specific codons to the DNA to become a Genomer. Moreover, those codons can only be acquired by creating precise vials. Toni needed to know the ingredients and the process to make that happen.

I hope to learn more in our next meeting.

The other matter on his mind was the mystery around Ansel’s demise. He still could not understand the reason for him committing suicide. He had searched his memories multiple times but there were no hints of the man being depressed or tired of living. Toni knew the answers to his question were probably in the recent memories he was missing. The notebook was somewhat helpful. Thinking about it, something came to his mind.

“Of course! Why didn’t I think of it sooner?” He said, hitting his forehead.

Ansel has another notebook. The red one he used to keep records of his daily activity.

Toni walked towards the bookshelf. He grabbed an old book in poor condition. He opened it and found the red notebook inside as expected. He sat down behind his desk and opened it. He skipped the pages he had memories of and was looking for those containing events that didn’t make it during the memory transfer. He finally found an entry he was not familiar with.

8th day of Zerwiec.

I met with Ms. Laurier. We went over some texts in Ancient Language. I shouldn’t call it Ancient Language anymore. According to what we translated, it was known as Dendi back then. Ms. Laurier is positive about it. She found proof in other texts and manuscripts such as ‘Haidara Tome’, ‘The Scarlet Ibis Testimony of the Exploding Sun’, ‘The Words Odd of the Parrot’ and ‘The Phantasmal Lord Fulsome Eulogy.” I have to say that I believe her.

Toni had to take a moment to remember that the names of the months were different from what he was used to. Even though they also have 12 months in a year, they used other names. From the first month to the last, Styzen, Luty, Marzec, Iecien, Maia, Zerwiec, Lipiec, Sierpien, Zesien, Padzernik, Litopad, Grudzien.

He continued his reading.

10th day of Zerwiec.

With my colleague Dr.Smith and Ms.Laurier, we talked about Wilem Von Shroeder for several hours. There is so much to the man we couldn’t even discuss everything we wanted. Ms.Laurier has an interesting theory on the man. According to her, what we know about Wilem’s origin may not be accurate. I tried to get more details from her, but it seemed like she didn’t know much herself. It was more of a hypothesis.

15th day of Zerwiec.

Nelson wants my help in his research. I had no idea the old man was sitting on such an interesting founding. But he needed my expertise in translating a manuscript from the Third Era. He showed me part of it to wet my appetite. He knew I could not resist, and I did not. I had no idea how he got his hands on something so old. I can only assume he must have spent a ridiculous amount of money to obtain it.

8th day of Lipiec

My work with Nelson's research is going well. The translation is going smoothly. But, we’ve found nothing worth getting excited about so far.

9th day of Lipiec.

We’re finally getting somewhere. The manuscript is actually a journal! But a lot of the things we’ve translated so far don’t make sense to us. One thing we are certain of is that it belonged to someone named Clovis.

11th day of Lipiec.

The manuscript scares me. The deeper we go into its content, the worse it gets. I told Nelson we should forget about the whole thing and stop now. He shares my opinion, but we’ve gone too far. Our appetites have been wet. We are hungry for more. Our curiosity is too strong. Our thirst for knowledge cannot be quenched. We are unable to stop!

12th day of Lipiec.

I feel like I’ve learned things I shouldn’t have. Some secrets aren’t meant for all to discover. Clovis’s journal, I wish I hadn’t known of its existence. Nelson and I think that we are in danger. I cannot make sense of everything we’ve translated. But one thing is sure, the world we live in is much more than what most of us think. Unfortunately for me, I have the feeling the end is near…

13th day of Lipiec.

Nelson is dead. I read about it in the papers. They say it was a suicide. I do not believe it. Does his death mean that my own end is imminent? Since the dice have been cast, I will try the Traveler’s Formula tomorrow. I had been reluctant to test it ever since I found the Formula. However, things are different now. I have no idea what it does, but I’m willing to take the risk hoping to save my life.

It was the last entry in the journal. Ansel had written them the day before his death. Toni was now able to fill in some gaps regarding the recent past of Beausejour. The man’s death was even more mysterious now. He didn’t know how Clovis’s journal played a part in his death and Nelson’s. What secrets did they discover that put their lives in danger? Ansel even planned to use the Traveler’s Formula, hoping to save his life.

Did I come to this world because he used the Formula before his death? Toni pondered.

He had no answers. But he wanted to get his hands on the journal they were working on. He was certain there were clues in it. He was also very curious about the secrets it holds. Toni thought of his next course of action. He realized he needed more information. Nelson was the other person who knew about the contents of Clovis’s journal. Toni believed he should explore that lead. But with the man dead, he did not have many options left.

“This is probably a bad idea, but I should go to the police station. I need to know what information they have on Nelson’s death.” Toni said to himself.
