Nogh didn't know what time it was or what had happened, but he was awoken by the chime of the fire bell. As soon as he heard it, he shot out of bed and could not only smell but see the black smoke in his house.
He quickly realized that he needed to get out as fast as possible, but not before making sure his sister was safe. He quickly ran to her room, slamming into the door to open it. Unfortunately for them, his sister was still sound asleep in her bed.
The fire was spreading fast in the wooden thatch roofed house, the flames had already spread to Nogh's former room. As soon as Nogh noticed that, he just stood there stunned for a few precious seconds before he gathered all of his courage, picked up his sister and planned to run out as fast as possible.
He knew that if he jumped out of his sister's window he would be able to slide down the shed roof and run to safety faster, and so he planned to use that route to escape. But as he got close to the window and ripped the curtains off, he realized that he can't escape this way.
The shed had already been fully engulfed in flames and parts of it had even collapsed. His escape route now lost, he knew that the only way out of this mess was the main staircase in the middle of the house, past his burning room.
He also knew that he didn’t have a choice, and that his chances to get out reduced every second he hesitated. Nogh was prepared to do whatever he had to, to save his sister. That was the job that his parents had entrusted to him, and he was adamant on fulfilling his role.
Nogh took a look at his sister's sleeping face and held her closer to his chest than ever, mind made up, he ran towards the staircase. He ran as fast as he possibly could, dodging the flames and the falling debris of his house.

As he ran past his parent's room, he noticed that the door had been left open by someone. But he didn't have the freedom to ponder on this, since he needed to get out. Before long, he managed to get to the stairs, but he noticed that the wood had become quite charred, and it was partly covered in flames. The flooring on the ground floor was also covered in flames, but it wasn't nearly as bad as upstairs just yet.
As he was debating between using the stairs or just jumping down, one of the 3 main roof beams snapped in half and crashed behind him, leaving a deep cut on his back which effectively pushed him down the stairs.
As he rolled down the staircase, he made sure to hold his sister as close as possible and did his best to shield her from harm, eventually hitting the floor, snout first into the burning hot flooring.
He shook off his nausea as quickly as he could, but he found that his body was quite battered by this point and wouldn't allow him to run anymore. He was, however, determined to get out and save his sister, so he got up. One step at a time, he started walking towards the front door.
Each step he felt the floor searing his feet, each step he could feel his blood flowing out of his back and snout, some droplets even fell on his baby sister's own snout.
Each step he took, his body reminded him how badly it was injured and caused him an immense amount of pain. His mind had gotten so used to the amount of smoke by now that he didn't even notice his own coughing.
He just kept pushing, filled with the hope of escaping this cruel fate. His once bright red scales were now closer to charcoal black than its previous red sheen. His burgundy coloured blood coating his clothes, creating dark brown rivers and clumps on his back as the ash stuck together with the blood on his body.
Upon reaching the front door, he realized that it was locked, and he wouldn’t be able to open it a normal way. So, using his remaining strength, he headbutted the door as hard as he could. Once, twice, a third and a fourth time before the door gave way and fell off its weak hinges.
Nogh's vision was very blurry now, both from the unknown amount of smoke he had breathed in and all the blows to his head, but he knew. He knew that he had succeeded and that his sister would be safe.
That was until he heard a terribly loud crack from above him. His eyes went wide, and he instinctively threw his sister as far as he could in his weakened state in an attempt to save her before all went black.
