CH.50 - A test of fortitude

“Die!”

Thrusting his hand out towards the side, Mican grabbed out towards the corpse-eater closest to him, latching onto his leg with an iron grip. Clenching the muscles in his arm, he braced himself onto the ground with his free hand as he swung his arm with all of his strength.

Crack!

Along with the swing came a slow, shocking snap. The young man’s eyes slowly widened in shock as he stared at the appendage completely tear off of the monster’s body, from the sheer force inserted.

In Mican’s mind, his plan was to swing the creature like a weapon to blow away the rest that were surrounding him, but before his plan could come to fruition, its limb had torn off in a spray of blood that painted his face red.

He had both underestimated his overwhelming strength and overestimated the durability of the corpse’s body. While the humanoid creature looked quite tough, its body and flesh had completely rotted through the body’s decomposition phase after death, throwing the young man off balance. It was especially so for the skinless ones, who had lost all semblance of their former selves, save for their humanoid figures.

“GRRRAH!”

Multiple screaming moans sounded into the air as the twelve creatures leapt upon Mican in the center of them, tearing with their hands and biting with their teeth, smearing him with blood in the process.

Their bites wouldn’t affect him much, unless he were to lose some flesh, but the nail marks pained him greatly and sapped him of his strength.

“Get off of me!” Roaring out, Mican forcefully stood up, flinging several creatures off of him.

The young man had no need to scream, but alone, it gave him courage.

He pounded out madly with his fists, caving in several of their heads while ferociously swinging his arms through his surroundings. Grabbing onto the freak on his back, Mican hurled him into the others, knocking a few over, yet still the onslaught continued.

Limbs flew over the clearing as Mican rammed through several of the corpse-eaters laying into him, yet more latched onto his back, clambering over him mindlessly in their attempt to kill him.

“AAAHHH!” A loud, unnatural scream pierced the air amidst the roars of the young man, and the groans of the corpse-eaters.

A large and boney white fist shot out from between the creatures, as Mican was tussling with them. It was almost like a stone pillar, hurtling forward with an unstoppable momentum.

Along with the scream came an incredible tearing sound as the fist blasted straight through one of the corpse-eaters in its path – with a shower of blood – continuing onward through its chest before meeting Mican’s face directly, with a loud thud.

The young man had thought it impossible to become even further bloodied, but reality proved him wrong as the blood of the creature sprayed all over his clothes, painting him almost entirely red.

The fist slammed straight into Mican’s face, flattening his nose and continuing deeper with astonishing force. Bodies flew across the clearing as the corpse-eaters surrounding Mican were blown away, either dead or heavily crippled from the force of the demon’s barrelling body.

The young man was sent flying back once again, two shiny white teeth shooting out from his mouth, along with a red spurt of blood, as he sailed through the air. His flight met its end at the edge of the clearing, where his body thudded helplessly against an old, hard tree.

Slumping to the ground, he lay there stunned from the impact.

While the blow had been softened by the body of the corpse-eater, the overwhelming physical strength behind it had still nearly knocked him unconscious. If it was Mican’s old self before arriving in Yaribol, his skull would likely have been completely shattered by the strike.

“DIEEEEE!” As Mican landed, the demon shrieked into the air, rushing at him on all fours.

It would not let him get away so easily, or even allow him the slightest amount of time to rest or catch his breath. It was the most sensible choice of action, ending him before any further complications rose.

“…” Blood trickled down Mican’s head, seeping into one of his eyes as he forced his head up to stare at the charging demon.

“RAH!”

Lifting its hands up above its head, Rose clasped the two into a large fist before swinging it down towards Mican at breakneck speed. A loud whoosh blew past the clearing from the immense weight of the strike, blowing the grass in the surrounding area back and shaking several branches in the nearby trees.

Crrrack!

Anticipating the blow, Mican jumped to the side at the last second, narrowly avoiding the strike as an ear-shattering series of cracks resounded throughout the clearing. Small pieces of wood sprayed Mican’s back as he dodged, reducing his cloak to tatters.

Whipping his head back in shock, Mican stared at the scene before him, beads of cold sweat forming on his forehead.

The tree had been almost split into two halves from the strike, in sheer brute strength. The ‘cut’ wasn’t clean though, looking more as if a god had sent a bold of lightning down to smite the tree.

“Die!”

Jumping to his feet himself, the young man’s eyes narrowed as he screamed out, clasping his hands into a large fist of its own, taking a step forward and bracing his leg against the ground before swinging upwards with all of his strength.

“AGHH!”

A shrill scream sounded out from the cambion along with a loud crack akin to glass breaking as a large chunk of the creature’s chin came clean off, flying through the air before shattering against the ground.

“Agah! GAH!” Unintelligible groans whimpered out from the bone demon as it stared at Mican, waving its hand towards him weakly.

Black liquid gushed out of its chin like a stream, staining the ground where it fell. Small pieces of Rose’s chin continued falling off, like porcelain, soundlessly dropping into the grass.

“Urah!”

Gathering all of his strength into his lower body, Mican braced his all of his weight behind one foot, shooting the other out with immense force that slammed straight into the cambion’s torse.

A thud sounded out as the demon was sent into the air this time, its heavy body slamming into the ground several meters away from the young man, sending up large chunks of dirt and grass.

Heaving in mouthfuls of air, Mican leaned onto the split tree as he stared at the body coldly.

“…”

A silence descended upon the clearing as Mican coldly stared at the bone demon lying beneath the massive head in the sky.

The distinct sounds of shouting and moaning could be heard in the distance, echoing through from Melinda’s campsite to the clearing he was standing in.

“…” A crack sounded out in the clearing as the cambion’s limbs snapped to attention, slightly startling the young man.

Planting both hands on the ground, Rose pushed himself upwards from the back, slowly sitting up while staring at Mican silently. While the demon’s eyes were only darkened pits, the young man could swear that he felt a hint of emotion flowing through them.

Strangely enough, there was neither anger nor pain in the demon’s gaze. The negative feelings one would feel after having their chin blown off were completely absent, and there was only intense, fierce greed in the demon’s eyes. It was the same sort of greed one would feel when looking at a priceless treasure, and the feeling unnerved him.

“…Is this why you’re called the messenger?” The young man broke the silence first, his words slightly slurring from the two missing teeth in his mouth. “You have nothing but strength and speed.”

A realization had dawned upon Mican in his brief respite, as he contemplated his next course of action. He had come into the battle expecting some horrible demonic ability, but there was none as far as he could tell.

He could not deny the possibility that it was all an act to get him to let his guard down, but allowing Mican to blow his entire chin off? If it did have such mystical abilities, the prime time to use them had long passed.

“Urgh…” The demon groaned silently as it staggered to its feet, stumbling slightly as black blood gushed out from its chin.

The black liquid that Mican could only assume to be blood seemed to have no end, having reached and long surpassed the amount of a human of the same size.

Raising his chin, Mican stared down at the white figure condescendingly. It was abundantly clear that it was beaten as it struggled to its feet, giving out a pathetic display.

“…” The demon kept silent, merely staring at him.

Even as it was stumbling to its feet its gaze never once wavered in staring at the young man.

In response to his words, the demon’s upper lips rose into a cruel smile.

“I may… only have strength and speed… but it is more than enough… to deal with a maggot like you…”

Its sentences were slow and warbled, but abundantly clear, sourcing out from the inside of its throat as opposed to its mouth and tongue. Staring at the scene, it seemed apparent to Mican that its speech had only been obstructed due to the black blood flowing from its mouth. It was as if it had no need for its teeth or tongue, as if its body was a mockery of the human form.

Thick and meaty veins could be seen pulsating through the cambion’s arms, even despite it having a body seemingly made of porcelain. The veins were green and blue, in stark contrast against its bone-white ‘skin’. He couldn’t make heads or tails of the sight, and it greatly repulsed him.

“…I am going to kill you now.” Mican couldn’t hold back the words, having instinctively come out from the sight he was presented with.

The intense surge of disgust flowed through him, and it was almost uncontrollable. It was as if the demon knew what it was doing, knowing exactly how to provoke him.

The small talk was cut short as Mican broke out into a quick dash towards the demon, taking long strides as he sped towards the latter.

“Aaahaaahaaahaa!” Breaking out into a repulsive warbled laughter – full of glee – Rose’s eyes widened as far as it possibly could as it watched the man approach.

The distance between the two wasn’t significant at all, being merely a few meters long. In an instant, the distance between the two was immediately closed.

Raising his foot high into the air, Mican stomped down with a tremendous force towards the demon’s right leg.

A loud crack reverberated throughout the clearing as the cambion’s leg completely shattered under the blow, the young man’s foot going straight through the demon’s leg in a spray of black blood.

Raising his head, the young man shot out his shoulder directly afterwards, bashing the demon’s chest back.

“Ragh!” Grabbing the demon’s right arm, Mican leveraged his shoulder against the demon, giving a hoarse shout.

Every muscle in his arm clenched as he pulled with all of his might, ripping the demon’s right arm clean off.

A new surge of black painted his clothes, covering the red that had stained him from the corpse-eaters. The arm completely shattered in the young man’s grip, crumbling through his fingers as if clay.

Veins bulged in his forehead as he swiveled his head to stare at the demon, his momentum gone.

“AARHA!” A strangled cry sounded out from Rose’s mouth as he fell backwards due to the sheer strength of the blow, but his gaze still never once left Mican.

As it fell, it shot out its left hand, Grabbing Mican by the forearm. Falling onto its ass, the creature shrieked out as it turned its body, swinging the young man high into the air.

The wind whistled by him and time seemed to freeze for a split second as he hung in the air, parallel to the earth.

“Urgh!” A loud groan was forced out of him as he slammed into the ground.

Thud!

Thud!!

Thud!!!

“AAHAAAHAAAHAA!” The demon’s shrieking turned into cries of joyous laughter as it slammed Mican into the ground by his arm, from the left to the right.

“GAH!” A spray of blood shot out of the young man’s mouth as he repeatedly crashed into the ground.

His eyes were shut tight, and his body flew in the air helplessly. The demon had abandoned any semblance of defense as it allowed Mican to attack, and he wasn’t fast enough to completely finish it off.

Continuous thumps echoed through the clearing as his body smashed into the ground. Five, six, and seven, the young man quickly lost count as all of the thoughts were violently shoved out of his head. An excruciating pain screamed in his ribs as his broken bone was put through the intense abuse.

After the tenth consecutive collision, the sound of tearing ripped through the air as Mican was sent flying, the sleeve of his shirt having torn straight off.

“Ugh!” Another groan sounded out along with a loud thump, as Mican crashed into the grass in the middle of the clearing.

“Huh?” Holding onto the sleeve curiously, Rose looked back between it and the figure lying prone in the middle of the clearing.
