It was late October, with the beautiful fall colors coming in, but Siegfried barely noticed any of it. In his twenty three years on this planet, none had been especially rewarding. He was a bit of a gloomy person and didn't get out much, not as if he had much free time to do so. And even when he did get a break from his work he'd rather spend it in doors, blasting Children of Bodom. Subsisting off the dregs of his part time job as a barista, he was living paycheck to paycheck.
Today was Halloween, and Siegfried morosely took in the scampering children, dressed in a variety of costumes, running about. It had been a while since he had been able to enjoy himself like that.
Siegfried shook his head and chuckled to himself as he finished wiping down the counter at the coffee shop. He wasn't excited to head home, as it wasn’t like there was anything waiting for him back at his apartment. Not since his girlfriend had left him for listening to ‘that abysmal music’.
He packed up everything and locked the door behind him as he left. He quickly dodged two children running down the street dressed as a storm trooper and a bedsheet ghost. The downtown of the small city he lived in was bustling with activity, which was to be expected on Halloween. Small children dressed up as all sorts of things being escorted by parents roamed around and visited the various shop fronts, angling for a few pieces of candy.
Siegfried made his way over to his beat up Honda Civic, with a morose grimace on his face. He got in and just sat there, staring at his wheel, thinking about nothing in particular. After a few minutes he snapped out of it, shaking his head and starting the car.

He rummaged through his small CD collection and pulled out a Necrophagist album, putting it in the slot, then he drove off. He made his way towards the more barren and sparsely populated part of the city, where his apartment resided.
As Siegfried pulled up to his normal parking spot, he noticed how few people were out and about, thinking nothing of it since it was Halloween and they probably had places to be.
He got out and made his way to the small apartment complex. It was in a bit of a sketchy area of the city, and looked not too well built but it was cheap and that was all he cared about.
Siegfried pulled out his keys and opened the door into the building. Walking across the foyer, he made his way to the rickety stairwell. It was stuffy and dimly lit, and the steps creaked under his steps as he walked. Suddenly he saw a flash of movement at the next landing. Siegfried found this a little strange since he hadn't seen anyone in the foyer and had assumed there wasn't anyone in the building,
“It's probably just a straggler off to some Halloween party” he thought to himself. But when he reached the landing, there was no one there. He suddenly felt a chill run up his spine and he opened the door to the hallway, checking if anyone was there. All he saw was a shadow slip into a doorway. He felt a bit uneasy but tried shaking it off as nothing.
After making his way up another story and reaching his room at the end of the hallway, Siegfried pulled out his keys and unlocked the door before he swung it open. He looked up into his dark room, and jumped when he saw a figure standing right in front of him. The last thing he remembered was seeing it jump towards him before he flew backward into the wall behind him, smashing his head and blacking out.
