Chapter 1: Maybe a Dream

Chapter 1: Maybe a Dream

I open my eyes I notice only darkness as I felt a warmth an all-encompassing, golden warmth that wrapped around me, cradled me. I was confused am I dreaming I questioned as I try to blink but it felt it did nothing.

I reach out to touch only to be met by something hard slowly I began to push feeling something thin and brittle then I punch and kick a loud crack was heard. With one final push, I tumbled out, landing in a heap on the cold, stone floor.

I broke through as stumble out of what it was as I was greeted by the bright light my heart pounding as I began to look around to see myself inside of what appears to be a cave. The cave around me was dimly lit with only the light in front of me as shadows flickering along the walls. I tried to stand, my legs shaky and unsteady. When I looked down, I saw something strange—claws where my feet used to be, covered in soft downy golden feathers.

Not only that but my hands are replaced three individual golden razor sharp talons and my arms partially merge with wings as I watch with strange mix of fascination and fear I had wings—feathers of a brilliant gold.

I my mind reeled as I trip back as my heart race wasn't I in the hospital what is this place is this a dream questions form in my head as fast and heavy breaths escape my mouth as I began to think what is happening. Wait my family what about my family I thought as I try to speak only meet a high-pitched chirp as I tried to piece together how I got here, but nothing made sense. All I knew was that I was in the hospital with my family then I'm suddenly in a cave alone.

I try to think if this was a dream I remember dad and mom said if I was dreaming I should pinch myself to see if I felt any pain and try thinking of something like a plate of food if it appears then I'm dreaming so I pinch myself, it felt real I try to think about the plate of food... Nothing I panic my breathing heavy as I try to calm myself down.

I turn around to be meet of what appears to be a golden shell with a crack on it as the light shine the egg. Was I in that egg? I questioned as I touch the egg for a moment before looking at my hands.

Then a loud sound came hunger gnawed at my belly, an instinctual urge that drove me to explore my surroundings, I needed food.

As I walk I tired to take in my surroundings the cave was cool and damp, the air thick with the scent of earth and stone. I stumbled forward, my new body awkward and unfamiliar. Each step was a challenge.

Step by step, I explored the cave. Stalactites hung from the ceiling like ancient teeth, and the air was cool and damp.

I found a small pool of water near the cave's entrance. A kid's face with fair skin, golden hair and with large hawk like eyes and golden irises. I try to remember what I am as I look on my reflection in awe, there was many fantasy creatures I learn when I read books or play DnD with my siblings maybe I'm one of them I pondered for a moments before coming to a conclusion I think I was a harpy which explains the wings I got on my back, my legs replaced with feathers and feet with talons as tried to think some more only to be interrupted as my throat became dry I then look at the small pool of water.

In a book I read it said that some water was drinkable while stuff like sea water was not thinking for a moment I dipped my head to drink, the water cool and refreshing. As I drank, I felt a sense of purpose slowly filling the void left by my confusion. I might not know why I was here or what had happened, but I was alive. And that meant I had to survive.

I took a deep breath, my new lungs expanding with the fresh air. The world outside the cave called to me, filled with unknown dangers and possibilities. I didn't know what lay ahead, but I was determined to find out. With one last look at the remnants of my golden egg, I stepped forward into the light, ready to face whatever came next.

The entrance loomed ahead, the outside world a mystery. Summoning my courage, I took a step outside. The sunlight was blinding at first, but as my eyes adjusted, the sight took my breath away.

I look as I was in some kind of mountain with a dense forest underneath, the trees were lush and green, their leaves rustling gently in the breeze.

I turned to my right, my gaze following the rocky ledge of the mountain. Another peak loomed in the distance, majestic and imposing. It became clear that I was in some kind of mountain range, nestled high above the world below. The view was breathtaking, the landscape stretching out endlessly, a sea of green and brown and blue.

The realization hit me that I was not just a newborn harpy—I was alone in an unfamiliar world. The vastness of the forest below was both intimidating and intriguing. I felt a mix of fear and excitement, my heart beating rapidly in my chest.

With the sun warming my feathers, I took a moment to survey my surroundings. The cave I had emerged from was one of many scattered along the mountainside, some partially hidden by foliage. The terrain was rugged, with jagged rocks and steep cliffs, but the forest below promised shelter and food.

Driven by an instinct I didn’t fully understand, I spread my wings experimentally. Despite being the same length as my arms they were larger and more powerful than I had imagined, and with a few awkward flaps, I managed to lift off the ground, it felt natural as if it was a just as simple as moving a finger. The sensation was exhilarating, the wind rushing past me as I hovered unsteadily. Flying was going to take practice, but for now, I was content to glide down to the forest floor.

I landed clumsily, stumbling as my claws touched the soft earth. The forest smelled alive, a blend of pine, moss, and earth. I felt a connection to it, a sense of belonging that eased the loneliness gnawing at my heart.

Exploring the forest, I noticed signs of other creatures—footprints in the soil, nests in the trees, and the distant rustle of unseen animals. I wasn’t alone here; this world was teeming with life. For the first time since my rebirth, I felt a spark of hope. Maybe I could find others like me, or at least survive long enough to understand my new existence I though as a growl escaped my stomach, I need food now but that would mean killing something I shutter on the though but I pressed on maybe I could find some berries but I read somewhere some of them are poisonous to eat, I sigh why didn't I ask or read a book on tips on how to check which plants or berries are poisonous.

With determination and fear, I set off deeper into the forest, ready to face whatever challenges awaited.
