Prologue: The Premonition

Prologue: The Premonition

The silent breeze blew past me as I stood up on the top of the withered building. I looked around and saw the destroyed landscape and how the twilight illuminated it with a crimson colour, as was the cloud which complete covered the sky.

There was not a single person in sight. It was as if, I was the only one left on earth. The silence was deafening and only one thought came reeling through my head.

'What happened here?'

Was the only thing I could think about at that very moment. The ruined city I was staring at, it's my hometown. I was on top of the tallest building in the town square, usually bustling with people and shops, the life of the city vibrant and colourful, was now reduced to a silent heap of abandoned weathered down buildings and broken streets and cars.

I looked down from where I was standing and could see the bottom. It was a long way down, but as I did so, I pondered on what I was doing up here in the first place, and how did I get up here.

Why does the city look like the aftermath of fallout? Where is everyone? I breathed heavily and I could feel the tension in my chest build up. This was too much for me to take in. The more I tried to process what was going on, the more nauseous I got. It was all so overwhelming that I felt like I was going to pass out.

And I think I did. After another moment I realized that there was a faint buzzing noise I could hear, until it came to a full blast and found myself falling down from where I was standing. The air was rushing against me and looked up to see the warm light shine on the shattered building.

But as I was falling I felt something else, I felt free, like I was about to reach something that I long awaited for. Even though I just fell from a hundred storeys and was now falling to my doom, I didn't fear death at all.

I just waited for it, my clothes were rustling against the wind and my body had fully relaxed, it wasn't long now until I would get what I wanted, but there was still so much questions to be answered, so many things that I haven't found out about yet. And yet, it didn't matter, because it felt like I already knew everything. But before the ending, I found myself asking one more question.

"What did I do?"

And after that, nothing.

...

"Ivan!" I heard a familiar voice yell out my name.

"Huh?!"

Started I jumped up from my seat and found myself sitting in my classroom at school, all of my classmates were laughing and staring at me, and my teacher Duncan was staring at me with an irritated look.

"Ivan, if you could pay more attention to my class instead of taking naps, maybe you wouldn't have such a hard time understanding the lesson." He turned back facing the chalkboard and started writing with the chalk in his hand.

"Sorry Duncan."

"That's Mr. Mishkin, to you, Ivan."

I smirked as he continued writing words on the chalkboard. The class was just giggling silently to themselves. I looked outside the window and saw the white cottony clouds line the sky. It was bright and sunny outside, the trees were blowing in the wind as the leaves flowed along the breeze.

Then I remembered something, a dream? Was I dreaming awhile ago? It all seemed so real, but I don't remember what the dream was about anymore.

I just remember, falling. Then my train of thought was interrupted by a loud voice that broke the quiet ambience of the classroom.

"Hey Ivan! What'cha thinking about?"

I winced at the loud noise coming from my right. I looked over and glared at the boy who was sitting on the desk of my classmate who was seemingly oblivious to the rowdy distraction swinging around on it.

"Hehe, you should have seen the look on your face when you woke up." He laughed to himself.

"Shut up." I said aloud out of an impulse.

"Excuse me, Ivan. Do you have something to say to the class?"

Duncan stared back at me and so did everyone else in the room. I could feel them staring right through me. I got flustered and apologized to the man in the tie.

"Sorry, it's nothing."

I glared back at the source of my disturbance; he was really starting to tick me off. I should probably explain who he is anyway.

The boy with white hair and red eyes dancing around on my classmate's desk was Ryder. He is a seemingly invisible boy to everyone but me. I've known him for my entire life, and for all I know, he probably isn't even real. I always imagined him to be my imaginary friend or something.

But there is one thing wrong with that, he isn't imaginary. I'm sure he isn't because of the way he can move things around. He usually likes playing pranks on me or anyone else if I'm not paying attention. A nuisance is what he is if anything.

And my name is Ivan Theor, and I'm a high school student right now. And as much as I would like to say that that is all there is to say about me, it isn't, because as far as I know, I'm not normal, and all I really want to know is 'why'.

After about thirty more minutes of boring class and Ryder cutting the power and throwing paper airplanes around, the school bell rang and all the students packed their bags and got up from their desks as they prepared to leave for home.

"Okay class. Don't forget your assignment on the chapter about the 19th century. I expect a 500 word essay by tomorrow."

I also did the same as I started making my way for the door, and right as I reached the frame, I felt a hand grab onto my shoulder and gently pulled me back inside.

"Oh no, hold on a minute Ivan."

I sighed as I was pulled back into the room. I turned around and looked at the person standing in front of me. He stood about a few inches taller than I did, and he was dressed in a white dress shirt with a black tie, and he wore some black glasses too.

"Ivan, look. I know that history isn't that interesting at all. But if you don't do something about your grades you'll drop. And I can't let that happen." He crossed his arms as he sighed.

"Yeah, sure whatever you say, Duncan." I said as I poked my tongue out.

"And about that. I told you to call me by my last name when you're in class." He said in a grumpy voice. Obviously I can't really get used to that, after all, it isn't like it really bothered him before.

Oh, I should probably say now, Duncan is my guardian, best friend, and roommate. I never really met my parents, but I'm going to assume they're dead or something, because I've never met them at all. Duncan said that he took me in because he was friends with my father, but I don't really believe him.

He never tells me anything else, and I know for a fact that he is hiding some things from me. But there isn't much I can do to make him talk. I guess for now, I can only wait and live life like normal. Then I felt something hop onto my back.

"Give me a piggyback ride Ivan! Let's ride out into the world! Haha hahaha!"

Or as normal as I can pretend anyways. Right now, Duncan and Ryder are the only family I have right now, and even though they aren't perfect, I guess I can live with it for now.

Duncan patted me on the head as I grumbled and walked outside for my next period, he gave me some homework for extra credit as I left.

And I managed to throw Ryder off of my back and out a window, not like it bothers him. After all he can practically phase through everything and fly around, so I don't care much for him.

I walked through the tiled floors of the hallway, all the people walking around, speaking and laughing to each other, I've come to realize, and I'm okay with all of this.

The silly thing that is my life.
