Shift 1

I was sinking. An infinite abyss was slowly dragging me into the darkness below. The cold made my skin feel numb and my limbs heavy.

The faint, shimmering rays of light above me were turning smaller by the second, as I sank further and further, and soon, they will be completely out of reach.

I tried lurching towards the surface, but my limbs were weak and my body refused to cooperate regardless of how much I begged.

I guess this is as far as I'll go.

I closed my eyes and solemnly accepted my fate, the little fight I had in me now gone.

.......?

Death, however, didn't seem to come.

My back hit a soft surface. The comforting heat it emanated embraced my weary body.

Opening my eyes once again, I was expecting to have reached a seabed or something similar. Instead, I was greeted with a painfully bright light that hurt my retinas as I instinctively tried to cover them once more. Taking a moment to adjust, I hesitantly opened my eyes once more to survey my surroundings. Everything looked a little blurry, but it seemed I was in a hospital room of sorts, laying on the bed.

Did I get into an accident? I don't remember being in one though.

Looking around me, I couldn't make out much else from my surroundings. I tried calling for help, but my throat felt so dry that the sound was having trouble coming out. I sluggishly moved my hand towards my face.

I don't have my glasses on right now.

I tried reaching around the bed in hopes of finding where they were, but that alone was very taxing on my body. Whatever kind of accident I must have gotten myself into, it seemed to have taken quite a toll.

As my hand wandered, it managed to brush against a little plastic box hanging somewhere next to the bed frame. Bringing it closer to get a better look, it appeared to be a remote used to call the nurses.

Letting out a sigh of relief, I quickly pressed the button. It didn't take long for someone to enter the room and approach me.

I attempted to speak to them, but yet again, I was only able to produce faint groans.

Please! help!

Not being able to say or do anything made me want to cry, but even the tears wouldn't cooperate.

The person’s cloudy visage made a noise as if speaking to me but not really saying words- or maybe I was the one unable to understand what was being said. The person got close enough to touch my forehead in a gentle manner, maybe worried I wasn't replying to whatever they were saying. The figure turned around to grab something and gently placed the object on my face.

My glasses!

The world became clear again, and I could finally see the person beside the bed. She was a kind looking nurse wearing pink scrubs, and had her long golden hair tied neatly in a bun. Her presence definitely gave me some comfort, it was like a small beacon of light in this desolate room, guiding me to safety.

The woman began speaking again.

".............................name?"

My eyes opened in surprise as I was able to comprehend some of it, but only the last part.

The nurse seemed to catch up on that and repeated herself.

"Can you tell me your name?" It took a bit of effort, but my hearing seemed to be working fine once again. That was one less thing I needed to be worried about, at least.

Encouraged by the return of my hearing, I tried putting some effort into making my voice come out. After a couple of failed attempts, some noises managed to escape and eventually form words.

".....C.......Chr....Christine."

"Miss. Christine? That's a beautiful name." Said the nurse in a cheerful tone.

Slowly but surely, even if I still felt very weak, my senses were returning to me. My throat felt very dry still.

"..w..water..." I probably wouldn't be able to hold a glass of water in my current state. Even if it felt embarrassing to have the nurse help me drink it, but it seemed that I had no other choice.

"No problem, I'll get you a glass right away!" She promptly exited the room, leaving me to my thoughts.

What exactly happened to me? I dove into my memories, but I had no recollection of at least the past week- not counting however long I was unconscious for. What about my sister, was she okay? My job? Have they noticed my absence? Anxiety was starting to build up inside me.

"I should question the nurse about these things as soon as she's back." I think to myself while adjusting my glasses.

Taking this time to properly ascertain my surroundings. It was a quite small, windowless hospital room, fitted with a single bed in the middle, and illuminated by a bright blue light. The quiet humming of the air conditioner made itself known, along with the rhythmic beeps of a heart monitor letting me know that I’m still alive.

Putting my thoughts on hold, the door opened once again. The same nurse as before came in holding a pitcher of water and a paper cup.

"Here you go love, you can have as much as you wa-" she stops once she looks in my direction. Her once warm and cheerful face now serious as she lets go of the pitcher, letting it crash into the floor, and scattering the water inside. She began turning away out of the door into the corridor.

"I-is something wrong?" I asked, shocked by the loud noise.

She stops in her tracks. Her panicked expression turning stern.

"Christine? ...Are you there?"

"...What do you mean? I haven't gone anywhere!" I said, now perplexed by her reaction.

The nurse stepped over the broken glass, moving towards the bed. She fished something from her pocket, a small mirror, and put it in front of me without saying anything. Confused, I looked into it expecting to see myself as usual.

But that's not what I saw.

In the mirror, there was nothing, or more specifically: I saw the pillow my head should have been resting against, as well as the indent caused by my weight. My head, however, was nowhere in sight. Moving my hand in front of my face gave me the same result: nothing.

I could still touch my face, feeling it’s natural warmth, it was undeniably still there, but I could see nothing of it in the reflection. Light was passing right through me as if I had never been there in the first place.

My body had turned invisible.
