Chapter 18: Protector

Chapter 18: Protector

I look at the notification in front of me with groggy surprise. Why do things keep happening right as I am about to fall asleep? You think it could wait till morning... I complain groggily before I conk out into my pillow.

The next morning I wake up to find the same notification sitting in front of me. Luckily, I didn’t get rid of it in a dazed sleep state.

I glance over the three abilities it says that I gained, Danger Sense, Mark of Protection and Perseverance. With a quick utturence the system thankfully pulls up the definitions of all three at once.

■ - ■

Danger Sense: If something seeks to harm you or someone you have marked, you become aware of the danger. (psi/mana required: 0)

Mark of Protection: Someone marked by you is affected by your class abilities (Currently: Danger Sense, Perseverance). You also gain knowledge of their location compared to yours. (psi/mana required to place mark: 20)

Perseverance: You will overcome any harmful state caused by magic within 30 seconds . This time is shortened to 10 seconds if someone you have marked is in danger.

(psi/mana required: 30)

■ - ■

Fascinating. These abilities seem very unique, but I can’t help but wonder how I could have gotten another class. I remember Sheyla mentioning something about being able to choose my class. Why wasn’t I given any options? And I remember Sheyla’s book saying that I should gain my class at level 5. What is so different about me?

Magical systems doing something other than what they are supposed to, doesn’t seem like a good thing.

There were other changes brought on by the class change that I should pay attention to. “[Status]”

That isn’t ominous at all. Not at all~♪... I really need to get more information from Taylor. Which unfortunately costs me money. That brings me back to my decision last night. On top of that I can’t let monsters like the Red Cap roam freely. Money and extermination. If that is not a win-win scenario the gods can take my doctorate!

I get out of my bed, causing the covers to fall to the floor. I walk to the bathroom with a spring in my step, ready to clean myself up.

I feel… strange this morning. Thoughts are coming to me clearer than usual.

I jump up and down in front of the mirror in the bathroom.

I feel strangely energized, almost as if I could run a few miles without breaking a sweat.

The strange feeling persists as I take my shower. Once I am done, I pull out my phone. I create a group chat with Blake, Damien and Rose.Thank you modern applications!

Me: Hey. You guys might want to come to the cafe near the school in an hour? I have some information that you might want to know.

Rose: Sure. I might be a little late tho.

Blake: Damien and I are already nearby. We can meet you there. What is this about?

Me: Magic.

Blake: I can’t wait.

I get a private message from Rose, I open it.

Rose: I thought that we can’t talk to people about… you know.

Me: There are ways around it. As long as I don’t specifically mention the System, or other things. I don’t feel a compulsion on my thoughts.

Rose: Huh.

Leaving Rose to ponder her thoughts, I hit the power on my phone so that I can change into some comfortable clothing. A pair of jeans and a shirt with a picture of a cat in space. Elegance at its finest. I walk downstairs to find Mom sipping on a cup of tea as she watches something on the tablet.

“Hey honey. I was wondering when you would get up.” She says, pausing her show and turning to me with a grin.

“Hi mom. I thought you were going to bookclub. Isn’t it on Fridays?” I ask, checking the time on my phone. Ten o’clock.

“It is. But it was cancelled because of how close the bookstore is to the school shooting.” She says, leaning back in her chair and smiling at me.

“That’s too bad.” I respond, pulling an apple off of the counter. “I might not be home until late tonight. Don’t wait up for me.”

“Make sure to be home by eleven. The streets aren’t as safe as they used to be.” Mom gets up from her chair, giving me a hug.

“I should be back by then.” I take a bite from my apple as I hug her back.

Mom pulls away from me to go back to her show. “I’ll be keeping track of the time.” She motions towards the clock with her hand.

I smile at her, making sure I have everything I need. I put my Beta Tester gloves on -maybe I should start calling them ancient gloves?-, grateful for how comfortable they feel on my skin. Grabbing a pink sweater I leave the house. Today is looking to be a little chilly..

It takes me around twenty minutes to arrive at the Cafe I had asked them to meet me at. Blake is showing Damien a youtube video on his phone.

Damien notices me first. He waves me over, excited about something.

“Look at this.” Damien says, restarting the video.

Blake looks at me briefly, smiling, before looking back down at the video.

The video has a time stamp in the left corner moving down second by second. The video shows a small back alleyway between two stone buildings, the alleyway is fairly clean with barely any trash lining it.

A woman wearing a hoodie and a scarf around her neck walks down the alleyway. She stops suddenly, looking at something outside of the camera’s view. She says something that isn’t picked up by the camera.

Frustrated by whatever she sees, she turns around, only to be brought up short by two men approaching from behind. Two men that she presumably spoke to, walk into the camera’s view.

She stands still, strangely calm as the men approach her. She say something and a thin whipish sword appears in her hand as she pulls it from somewhere.

An inventory.

Then she says something again, the stone wall reaches out grabbing one of the men. She lights up with a familiar glow.

The same glow that the Beta Tester I’d killed used.

She moves so fast that my eyes are barely able to follow her. By the end of it, every man that had surrounded her was bleeding out on the ground. She looks at something outside of the camera’s view. She says something that can’t be heard and walks out of the alleyway.

Blake stops the video. “I have been looking all over the internet for people like you, ever since the night we went after Rose. There are a couple other videos that might be real, but she was the only one that used the same glow as… Well, you know.” He puts his phone in his pocket as he speaks.

“It looked real.” I say, a little shocked at the gore involved. I never liked gory movies.

“It did.” Damien confirms, looking a little sick.

“So, what did you call us here for?” Blake asks, folding his hands together with a professional air.

“Let’s wait for Rose before I answer that.” I say, pulling out my phone to get an ETA.

Me: how much longer are you going to be?

Rose: idk. 30 mins?

Me: We are waiting on you.

“She said that she will be here in thirty minutes. So you guys can do whatever you want while you wait. I am going to grab some grub.” I stand up and walk to the counter, rubbing my shoulders for warmth as I walk.

That woman in the video moved with a speed that I could barely match with my supposedly “unmatchable speed” ability. Whatever power she was glowing with, it obviously gave her a physical advantage.

I order a sandwich without really thinking about it, then I hand over a small amount of cash, before walking back to the table.

I need to up my game. The two body enhancing abilities I have are Enhance Body lvl 2 and Unmatchable Speed lvl 3. I haven’t even used Enhance Body since the tutorial, which is a serious oversight on my part.

One of these abilities requires mana, while the other is psi based. I should focus on leveling up the one that requires less energy and has a more passive effect, either that, or learn to use the energy that I suspect the other Beta Testers are using. Leveling my mana spell seems like the smartest course of action.

So that is what I do as I wait. I eat my sandwich while leaving my Enhance Body spell active. After twelve minutes, I run out of mana, but I am greeted by a message that I was hoping to see.

■ - ■

Enhance Body has leveled up to lvl 3!

■ - ■

I smile at the message, throwing a quick glance at the two boys, who are busy watching videos on Blake’s phone.

Now I really get to see how long it takes for my mana to regenerate.

It turns out, it takes a while longer than my psi. By the time Rose arrives, I only have fifty man regenerated.

“Hey guys. Sorry for holding you up, my dad was busy giving me a lecture.” Rose says, sitting down at our table.

“It’s fine. Now Elena can tell us why she called us here.” Blake says, looking pointedly at me.

“So you guys believe that there is magic in this world, right?” I start, trying to lead up to what I have to say.

“You proved that to us.” Blake says. Damien bites his cheek, obviously unsure of the answer to my question

There is nothing I can do about Damien’s disbelief, so I continue, “What if I told you that there are monsters out there? Things that really do go bump in the night.”

Damien speaks up, “Really? You can’t be serious. I mean, I saw what you did in there, it was unbelievable. But monsters don’t exist, if they did, humanity would be extinct a thousand times over.”

Blake and Rose look like they want to argue with him, but look unsure how they might do that.

Irritated with Damien, I take off one of my gloves, showing everyone my clear white skin, then, I grab a butter knife and stab my hand. I take out the knife and stare at the blood flowing down my palm dispassionately.

I show him my palm as my single glove starts to glow, healing the wound caused by the knife. Interestingly enough, one glove on its own shows its lack of power as it slowly heals my hand. I cast “[YOU BETTER HEAL RIGHT NOW].” The wound closes in the next second.

Everyone stares at me in shock, except for Rose, who looks at me with more worry than anything else.

“I believe that these monsters are staying invisible from the public somehow. But I am planning to hunt some of them, I thought I would warn you before I went hunting.” I say, slipping my glove back on.

“You can’t really expect us to let you go hunting these… monsters. At least not by yourself.” To my surprise, Damien speaks up, trying to stop me from going on my own.

“What other choice, do I have? For some reason, most people can’t see them.” I respond, running my hand through my hair as I think.

“Maybe there is some way for you to help us see them?” Blake asks, his finger tapping against his other hand.

I think about his words, before a thought comes to me. “You’re right, maybe I can help you see them.”

Mr. Tanaka said that both him and sensei could sense the energy in the world. Maybe that means that other people can use it to. I enter a meditative state, remembering one of the first abilities that I created.

I reach out and touch Blake’s forehead, through my finger, I send a small amount of psi into him. Then I find it. Blake has psi inside of him. I use my psi to stimulate the chakra of his third eye. Going through the same process I went through, I make Blake open his third eye.

■ - ■

Congratulations! You have used your psi to control another’s. You have gained the ability: Psi Manipulation: Lvl 1

■ - ■

I move my hand away from Blake’s forehead, surprisingly exhausted from my use of psi.

“What did you do?” Blake asks. I look to my side, only to realize that I didn’t bring a purse.

“Rose? Do you have a mirror that Blake can borrow?” I ask her.

Rose nods, pulling one out of her purse and handing it to Blake.

“What do you see on your forehead?” I lean in closer, hoping for the right answer.

“A… An eye.” Blake says, confusion evident in his voice.

“Good.” I say, remembering the description of the ability. “Eye Of Truth. It allows you to see all that is being hidden from you.”

I reach towards Damien’s forehead and use the same ability on him. I do the same with Rose and myself.

“I’m not sure whether this will work or not. But it should.” I stand up, scooting my chair back. “Let’s go hunting.”
