First Night of the Game - 1

First Night of the Game - 1

The church door creaked open. Rein stood up. “Father Marcus, where were you?”

“I’m sorry Rein, i have something to take care first. Come to the altar please, i have something to give to you.” father Marcus closed the door and locked it.

“What is it?” Rein asked. They both moved next to the altar.

Father Marcus took out a cross like sword. “This is the sword that your father gave to me before he moved here 15 years ago.” He wiped the sword. “It’s an excellent blade, made from a high quality material, and enchanted with a high miracle.”

Blood was dripping from Rein mouth. The bloodied cross came out from his back, but his shock and confusion at who did that to him eclipsed the pain he felt. With a trembling mouth he asked. "W-W-Why?"

"I’m sorry Rein, this is a task the god gave to me." Father Marcus replied with a satisfied smile. Contrary to what he said he showed no sign of remorse or sorry in his face. He pulled the cross and wipe it with a fabric before raising it above his head. "This is a mission the god gave me, and i intend to finish it."

Rein dodged it. He tried to run away to the front door, but the door won't budge no matter how hard he pushed or kicked it. He looked around, the window was too high for him to climb, and going for the side door mean that he have to pass Father Marcus, who was walking slowly to him a mad grin on his face and a sword in hand.

"Don't think you can get away, the hammer of judgement will fall on you tonight."

"MOVE! Or i’ll hit you with this." Rein shouted. He picked up a wooden chair. Father Marcus wasn't deterred by his threat. Rein gritted his teeth, he doesn't want to hurt him, but he won't let father Marcus just kill him like that. He bashed father Marcus with the chair.

Before it could touch father Marcus, he raised one hand to stop it.

The chair was stopped by just one hand, and with another small movement, broken into small pieces. Rein eyes widen in shock.

"Oh my! Attacking an executor is a grave sin you know, one punishable by death!"

Rein body was blown back by a kick. His body flew 5 meter until it hit the wall and fell to the ground.

'How can a human move like that?' He thought. It felt like his ribs were broken, and no matter how hard he tried to get up, his arm won't move.

"I used to wonder why Constantine would ever be bothered to take a child like you.....but now i know, he seen it before, he knew that you will become a keybearer."

Rein clenched his fist and slammed it on the ground. "My father is not like you!" He screamed.

"Of course, if he were in my place right now, he would have killed you on the first attack. I couldn't help it, god has made me like this, torturing sinner in his name make me really happy." Father Marcus raised his sword again.

Father marcus body was blown to the altar, destroying it. Smoke filled the room as the church trembled from a loud explosion. The wooden front door turned into a barrage of shrapnel, skewering any caught in its path. The shattered window showered the interior of the church like a snow, sparkling in the moonlight.

"Oh dear,Oh dear! Marcus, Marcus! you should have waited a bit longer."

An old man in a wheelchair strolled through the blasted doorway, behind him, a doll like woman pushed his wheelchair.

Marcus stood up, with only a few scratches on his now serious face .He took out three dagger that look like a small cross and threw them at the old man.

Calvin took out a rifle and shoot the all the daggers midair. Sweat began to form on Marcus head, and his chest heaving rapidly.

The woman behind Calvin walked forward, but he stopped her."You take care of the boy." The woman nodded and walked to treat Rein wound.

Calvin took something big that was covered with black shroud beside his wheelchair and placed it on his laps. He opened the black covering, It's a minigun.

He pulled the trigger. With a thunderous roar, the minigun shot hundreds of round at Marcus, demolishing any cover he took. Chair, table, pillar, anything he hides behind became full of hole. He escaped to the side door.

Like a rabbit that escaped lion clutches and ran to a wolves den, Marcus found himself escaping the hail of bullet only to face Elis outside. She had escaped his binding.

Numerous magic circle appeared in the air.

“Instant Cast?!” Marcus asked in disbelief.

Each magic circle shot a destructive magic bolt that could blow the ground. Marcus took one of his cross and planted it on the ground, creating a magical barrier.

It shook and it cracked, but it was able to withstood Elis attack.

Elis growled. She raised one of her hand and started chanting something with an ancient language.

A  giant fireball appeared in the sky and hovered 20 meter above the ground, like a mini sun. The light from it illuminate the surrounding house, making it look like it was daytime.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

The Fireball shot down like a meteor. Father Marcus raised his cross and moved the magic barrier above his head.

He held the cross tightly, pouring all of his mana to maintain the barrier, but even with all his might, it shattered in matter of second.

The barrier didn’t stop the fireball, but it gave him enough time to get away, but even then his feet was caught by Elis hair, sending his body to the ground. He swung his sword trying to cut the hair, but the hair was tough as steel. The hair coiled around his leg like a snake.

*Crack* His leg broken, but he didn’t scream nor does he look to be in pain. The hair slowly worked its way to all of his body.

"CRUSH!" With a simple command, Marcus body bursted into blood. When she retracted her hair, what left was nothing but a lump of flesh, organ, and a pool of blood.

"Elis?" She turned to the source of the sound. Rein was carried by a woman.

"Let him go!" Elis yelled. Magic circle formed in the air again. From it, a small fireball shot out, but the fireball dissipated mid air.

"Stop! They're friendly." Rein shouted. Elis stopped her magic. "Put me down please, i can stand on my own."

Elis ran to him and checked his body. "Master! Are you alright?"

"I'm fine Elis, i got a few wound, but she already healed it."

Elis was relieved. turned to the woman and the old man in wheelchair beside them. Elis was still on guard, and her eyes showed hostility. "Who are you?"

"I'm Calvin, an old man, and a neighbour." Calvin took his hat off and bowed. "And this is doll." The woman beside him also bowed.

"It's fine Elis, they are the one who helped me." Rein calmed her down.

She sighed."If you say so master." She kneeled. "I'm terribly sorry master! I let something like this happen, i will accept any punishment."

Rein face felt hot looking at Elis like that. He raised her head up. "I-It's fine Elis, what happened here is also partially my fault."

A wide grin formed in Elis face. She jumped and hugged Rein, pressing her chest at his face. "GUH! Your embarrassed face is sooo cute master! I just want to cuddle you like this!."

"H-hey s-stop it Elis!"

Rein turned his head and saw Calvin and Doll was looking at something at the ground. "What is that?" He asked. Elis face turned solemn.

"It would be better if you don’t know Master.." Despite Elis warning, Rein walked near it. He fell on his back when he realized what that blob was, his mouth wide open. His chest weaving rapidly. Elis look away in shame."I-I'm sorry master. I shouldn't have done that. I could just incapacitated him, but i'm so angry"

“Don’t be too shocked Rein.” Calvin said. Rein looked at him. “If you want to stay in the game then something like this would happen eventually. You should thanks your spirit for not letting him get away.”

He took a deep breath. After watching Aldwin fight he knew that something like this would happen, but seeing it first hand still shocked him. "It's fine Elis." His breathing slowly returned to normal. "You did it to protect me right? It's okay Elis."Hearing his answer returned smile to her face."but please don't do it again, a bullet to the head is much better."

"Prepare the grave Doll!" Calvin turned to face Rein. "Let me handle this. I know you have a lot of question, but get a rest for tonight, i explained it to you in the morning."

He try to stand up, his body still shaking. Elis hold his body, helping him stood up. “Let’s go back Elis!” He walked back to his house with Elis following.

Inside the house Elis asked Rein to take off his jacket and shirt to check his wound. She checked the wound on his back.

“Master, can you tell me who they are?”

“You mean Calvin and Doll?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t know much either. When i moved here they are already lived across the street. For Calvin, I know that he’s my father acquaintance, they have known each other for a long time. Father always told me to stay away from Calvin, even though he’s nice to everyone. For Doll.. i don’t know. I think no one know but Calvin. She always follows him anywhere, obey his every order, and never speak to anyone but him.” Rein looked over his shoulder. “How about my wound?”

“Is it still hurt?”

“Not really, it hurt a little as long as i don’t move to much or touch it.”

“It’s healing well, far too well.”

“What do you mean?”

“The wound is closed almost perfectly, not to mention she fixed a few of your bones.”

“Isn’t that normal? I once saw a spirit who got a big hole in his stomach and it healed in a few minute.”

“Healing yourself and other is a different matter Master. Healing yourself is easy, you know your own body, your own body is compatible with your mana. That can’t be said for healing other, that’s why it’s strange that your wound heal so well. I can completely heal myself even when i get a severe injury, but healing other to this extent.....”

“That mean we have to thank them even more then.” He answered quick.

Hearing his answer made her smile. “You should get some rest master.”

“Yeah we should. you can use the room next to mine Elis” He put on his shirt again and stood up.

“Master, after what happened earlier, i think we should sleep together.”

He was surprised by her suggestion. “W-What? N-No way!”

“What if someone attack you during your sleep. I’m a mage, not a warrior, if someone attack you, i’m not fast enough to run to your side and help you.”

“We think of a way, but sleeping together is NOT an option, now way! Out of question!” He insisted. It was not like he don’t want to sleep with Elis, he bet any straight man would want to sleep with her, but if she was sleeping next to him, there is now way he would be able to get any sleep. He thought a way to convince Elis. “I know, what if you make some kind of sensor so that if anyone get close to this house you will know about it, you can make that right?”

“I can make that, but like i said before, even if i know someone is coming, i might not be able to act in time if the enemy is too fast.”

“Uhhh.... What if you make some kind of shield around my room so that no one can get in?”

“That will eat a lot of my mana to maintain for a night, it just not feasible.”

“Damn It!... Wait, i just use father bedroom, it have no large window so if enemy attack, they have to get inside first. How about that?”

“That.. might... just.. work.. But-”

“No but! Let just go with that plan for tonight, okay?”

He showed Elis her room first before he went to his father bedroom. He laid on the bed and exhaustion slowly catching up to him. Lot of thing happened that day. Elis, his spirit showed up that morning, The front door was destroyed and repaired, The Game of Spirit, cooperating with the Heroic faction, watching two legendary spirit fight, attacked by Father Marcus and almost get killed, helped by Calvin, and now he's sleeping in his father bedroom.

He smiled. He was surprised by himself, to think that even after what happened today he could still smile.
