The Last Shot

At the entrance of an alleyway, two men are sitting in a car.

“Does it look clear”

“Yep”

He presses the gas pedal.

“What if she lied to you?”

“She wouldn’t lie to this face.” He smiles showing off his crooked teeth.

“I Guess you're right. Got everything?”

“Yeah, remember shoot me if you need to”

“I know, I know, one sec”

“What is it?”

“A kid just walked into the alley”

“A shame.” the man unconcerned exits into the road.

—outside the alleyway—

A man peeks in

“When did the old man get here?”

“Who”

Cris points out an old man lying in front of the cafe. The body looks like it’s folded upon itself. Then cautiously he moves towards the body.

“Cris, we need to set up the barrier”

“This won’t take long,” tramping over a dandelion, he moves to inspect the old man.

“It doesn’t look like he’s breathing.”

“Cris, do it after”

“Ok, ok, let me move the guy out of the way first

Inside the cafe, Keven hears a scream of pain and immediately covers his ears, this doesn't even dampen the sound. With it comes a headache one worse than when the coffee beans were grounded. Annoyed but curious he follows the sound, It seems to be coming from outside, *ding* He throws the door open, and the scream changes into a plea. Outside stands two men both covered in black, the legs of an old man partly obscure the one closest to the doorway, and there seems to be a small trail of blood leading from the front step to him. Keven stumbles back as the door closes.

”Drop the dead guy, we’ve been figured out.” *slam*

“Plan B?”

“Plan B.”

The masked figures, armed and ready for action step inside the cafe. Inside there is seemingly no one. “Anyone home!” walking over to the only booth he grabs the half-eaten cookie. “I’ve found you!” he says, looking under the tablecloth. There is the same kid that opened the door.

“Stop man, if you don’t come out. This Kid is going to GET IT!” he said tauntingly

“Don’t you think we are going too far?” whispers Cris.

“no. I’m going to count to 3, ONE, TWO!”

Something going on with this kid Albert thought. Watching, he grabs the sprinkles off the counter. *ding* with the door open, a scene reveals itself. Two masked men and a body. Reacting Albert climbs over the bar counter. Surprising the barista. “What are you doing?”

“Get down,” he says before whispering, ” There are some armed men outside the door, call the cops.” *ring* *ring*

“Hello this is the police, how can I help.” “Two armed men are standing right outside of the building–.”

“Where are you located”

“I’m at the Stop Man cafe on Baker Street” *ding*

“ok, we are sending over officers, they should arrive in a few minutes. Please stay on the line.”

“Anyone home!”

“They’re here” The suited man crouching puts a finger up to his lips. They sit waiting in silence.

“I’ve found you” echoes out from the other side of the room.

“Stop man, if you don’t come out. This Kid is going to GET IT!; I’m going to count to 3,” The suited man frantically points at her.

“ONE”

“tell them he’s not here”

“TWO!”

“You do it”

“You’re in uniform”

“Threeee”

“Wait, wait, He isn’t here, Stop Man isn’t here.”

“Who was that?”

“He isn’t here, don’t shoot the kid” A woman wearing an apron stands up from behind the counter.

“Step out from behind the counter!” She compels. Leaving the suited man behind.

“You look like stop man’s daughter.”

“Um, no you are mistaken”.

The armed man walks over to her to look at her name tag, “Your name is also, Natalie”

“It’s a common name”

*thud* *thud* heavy knocks rain down on the front door. “Cris, whatever happens in the next minute, do not shoot your partner in crime, It will go poorly”.

“Do you know who it is”

“I don’t believe I do”

Distracted, the two men fail to notice the man in camo, projecting the cafe behind him. From Cris's perspective, his co-conspirator was blasted by an invisible force. Should I shoot him? *ding* The door opens.

“Cris, shoot me!”

Two police officers burst into the cafe. Seeing the male police officer running straight for him. Cris moves to shoot the man on the floor *bang* the shot goes off and hits its target, but Cris doesn’t get a second shoot-off as the police officer crashes into him, the gun flings out of his hand during the fall and the man on top suddenly transforms into an unrecognizable mess of burns and bruises. Cris getting out from under the man surveys the scene: his gun has been picked up by Natalie, and his partner seems to be unharmed and cuffed.

Drive shouts across the room, “Get on the ground.”

“I didn’t do anything, don't shoot me,” Cris replied as he slowly moved to the floor.

“Keep your hands where I can see them.”

The already handcuffed man starts to laugh and he doesn’t stop even when backup finally arrives.
