Cornered

Damn, she probably thinks I am super creepy now. I was just happy my powers were coming back! I need to explain myself. Will that make me look pathetic? No, I am just clearing things up. I don’t want her to think something wrong of me. Well, I don’t really care, what she thinks of me anyways, but still! Bhalt’s mind was left wandering, ashamed by the situation that just happened. She thinks I’m useless, she didn’t even want my help to beat that crazy spear-guy! Whatever, where is this old punk anyways? Is he slacking off?

Bhalt who was trying to return to the staircase looked all around him to spot his companion Favian. He saw debris everywhere, flames raging to the roof, blood splattered across the ground, lots of other people fighting and many corpses, whether these people burned to death, got crushed by junk falling from the roof or died fighting each other, it did not matter anymore. All that was left is their remains on this unusual battlefield. The stank of smoke and burning flesh crept up on Bhalt with the diminution of his adrenaline level. Soon he was able to spot Favian, standing battle-scared with blood flowing from his face amidst the unconscious and dead bodies of the guards that attacked them earlier.

Bhalt hurried towards Favian, when he was close enough, he stated: “Naamala is fighting the spear-guy.”

“Doesn’t matter. She said she can handle him on her own. I don’t know if that’s true, but I’m not gonna try and fight her.”

“She told me to get you and create a way to safety. She’ll probably just follow us once she is done.”

“Can you handle that? Look at yourself! You look like you’ll collapse any minute! You fought all of these fools on your own after all…”

Favian boasted through Bhalt’s mind.

This old punk, Bhalt thought. Let’s hope he really is. I am bad at hand-to-hand combat against trained opponents. I need to find a weapon somewhere, otherwise my training with him was pointless. I still haven’t paid back my debt!

Favian and Bhalt were hastily ascending the staircase, with all the smoke escaping the station to the surface, soon they would follow. They were not able to see much because of all the smoke, when they finally stepped out of the smoke however, they were surrounded by the police. Men and women dressed with their usual police gear were watching the exit of the station, pistols in hand, ready to shoot at any moment.

“Stop right there!” one of the policemen shouted at them.

“We are unarmed” Bhalt responded, taking one step forwards while showing the palms of his hands. Suddenly a shot was fired, from the pistol of the policemen who just talked. The bullet hit the ground right in front of Bhalt’s foot that he placed in front of him.

Stolen story; please report.

“I told you to stop there! Don’t move!”

Bhalt quickly retracted his foot to where he originally stood.

Favian questioned Bhalt’s mind.

“You are prisoners, you shaits! You probably caused all of this trouble! You will stay right where you are and will be constrained!” the policemen shouted once more. Right after that, he mumbled something to himself, only noticeable to Bhalt and Favian thanks to the half-helmet the police are required to wear. A few tense heartbeats later a person emerged from the horizon behind the line of policemen. A woman in police attire carrying two taqids walked slowly towards Favian and Bhalt. Once she stood in front of them both, she spoke with a faint smile on her lips: “Please put your Hands over your head and cross both your wrists above your forehead.”

A chill ran down Bhalt’s spine and he thought: Why does she seem so calm? Is she not at all scared of us? Nonetheless, he obliged. Favian did the same. Only a moment later, and the woman quickly pointed one toqid at each of them and shot a metal nail through their wrists which anchored itself into their forehead. However, neither Favian nor Bhalt felt any pain, as the nails were coated in yri. Even though the nails technically penetrated both their wrists and tied them to their foreheads, the nails did not inflict any wounds upon them. “Please follow me now”, the woman said softly as she turned around and started strutting away. In that moment, footsteps echoed through the staircase right towards Bhalt and Favian. The footsteps grew louder as they climbed up the stairs.

Favian spoke into Bhalt’s mind once more.

A moment later, Naamala emerged from the smoke rising through the station’s exit to the air, a long metal spear in her hand, she questioned with a sarcastic tone: “Were you waiting for me?” On the cue, both Bhalt and Favian turned towards her.

“You are right on time!” Bhalt exclaimed with a grin on his face. Suddenly, the yri coated metal nail penetrating Bhalt’s wrists and tying them to his forehead melted, liquid metal dropping to the floor and the yri coating fleeting into the air. A puzzled look crept up on Naamala’s face, as Bhalt lowered his arms again. “My power”, Bhalt explained with a wink.

“Well, I’m glad I didn’t have to pull it out of you. Can you free Favian as well?” Naamala asked, with Favian nodding right next to Bhalt.

“Oh of course, of course!” Bhalt spoke hastily, while putting his right hand on the nail impaling Favian, melting the nail into hot liquid metal as well. Favian screeched in pain.

“Sorry.” Favian mumbled.

While the group was focused on freeing themselves, they did not register the reactions of the policemen, when suddenly the sound of another bullet being fired echoed through the city. Quickly Naamala coated all three of them in pure yri again, making the bullet drop dead in motion when it would’ve hit Bhalt from behind.

“Anyways, here I got a present for you.” Naamala stated, followed by her throwing the spear she had collected from her defeated opponent towards Bhalt who catched the spear. Bhalt nodded happily and only uttered a small: “Thanks”, before turning around towards the policemen again. Suddenly the tip of the metal spear liquidated into hot burning metal. More and more of the metal started melting and dropping to the ground like a dead rope. The melting stopped on the part of the metal Bhalt held firmly in his grasp. Even though the rest of the metal had liquidated it still stayed connected to the part in Bhalt’s hand.

“Who wants to be first?” Bhalt asked mockingly while whipping the hot liquid metal against the floor.

Everyone stood in silence with their gaze locked on Bhalt in awe and shock.
