Plans and Rewards

After the duel, Liam couldn't help but feel a tinge of jealousy towards the students who displayed such remarkable control over their powers. They were not much older than him, and yet, they already seemed so adept at wielding their abilities. This made Liam even more determined to strengthen his own powers and gain better control over them.

With thoughts of the duel and self-improvement still swirling in his mind, Liam returned to Zelkor's shop to retrieve his repaired armor. The lizard-man had skillfully restored the Steelhide Boar Jacket to its original condition.

Liam concentrated for a moment, channeling energy into his eyes to examine the jacket.

Enhanced Steelhide Boar Jacket

A sturdy jacket made from the skin of a steelhide boar. This jacket will protect weak slashing and crushing attacks. The jacket has been enhanced with material from an Irontusk Boargator. Additionally, a repair spellform has been inscribed.

As Liam tried it on, he could feel the improved fit that Zelkor had promised. The armor seemed to mold itself perfectly to his body, providing maximum protection without hindering his movement.

Zelkor grinned and walked over, gently tapping the Steelhide Boar Jacket that Liam was now wearing. "I did more than just repair it, you see. I've also added a few reinforcements as a reward for your bravery."

"I took the liberty of incorporating some magically treated materials into the jacket. These materials will not only make the armor stronger, but also slowly repair over time if you can provide energy and raw materials. Although it is somewhat inefficient compared to what I can do in person."

Zelkor extends a claw and rakes it across the front of the jacket, leaving a shallow gash. He takes a few pieces of scrap leather and leaves it next to the armor.

Intrigued, Liam listened intently as Zelkor continued. "First, you need to focus your energy, gather it within yourself. Then, imagine a link between your energy and the enchantment in the armor. Picture your energy flowing into the armor and activating the enchantment."

Liam nodded and closed his eyes, concentrating on the energy within him. It took a few attempts before he was able to establish a connection with the enchantment in the Steelhide Boar Jacket. He could feel the energy from within himself flowing into the armor, the sensation strange and slightly tiring.

"Good," Zelkor said approvingly. "Now, maintain that connection and keep channeling your energy. You will begin to see the armor repairing itself as the enchantment takes effect."

Liam followed Zelkor's instructions, maintaining his focus on the connection. To his amazement, he could see the armor gradually repairing the shallow cut Zelkor made. Although he could feel his energy being drained, the sight of the armor repairing itself was thrilling. As the recent damage was repaired, the scraps of leather slowly shrunk before Liam’s eyes.

After a few moments, Zelkor instructed Liam to stop, not wanting to tire him out completely. "That was excellent, Liam. But be cautious; using this enchantment can drain your energy, so use it wisely. Don’t leave yourself tired if you are travelling or in dangerous areas."

Liam thanked Zelkor for the invaluable lesson and left the shop, feeling a sense of accomplishment. Not only had he learned more about his armor, but he had also discovered a new aspect of his abilities that he could explore and develop.

The lizard-man waved a hand dismissively. "No need for thanks, Liam. You showed great courage, and I believe in supporting those who stand up for what's right. Just remember to be cautious, and try not to get yourself into too much trouble."

Liam smiled, grateful for Zelkor's generosity and concern. "I promise I'll be careful, Zelkor. Thank you so much for everything."

With that, Liam left the shop and headed back to The Slumbering Drake, his steps lighter and more confident than ever, knowing that the reinforced jacket would provide him with even greater protection in the days to come.

Back at the Inn Liam is nursing a drink, his mind preoccupied. With a deep breath, Liam mustered up the courage to approach Rolf with his request. "Rolf," Liam began hesitantly, "I've been thinking... I want to become stronger, and I think you could help me. Would you consider training me?"

Rolf looked at Liam thoughtfully for a moment before shaking his head. "Liam, I'm flattered that you think I could help you, but I must decline. I am not a teacher, and more importantly, each person must walk their own path in life. The journey to strength is a personal one, and it's something you must discover for yourself."

Rolf placed a comforting hand on Liam's shoulder, sensing his disappointment. "If you're truly determined to grow stronger, the best place for you might be the academy," Rolf suggested, a thoughtful look in his eyes. "The teachers at the Arcanum Institute of Spiritual arts are skilled in various disciplines and can guide you in honing your abilities. I've seen many young people like yourself go through the academy and emerge stronger and more confident."

Liam's eyes widened at the mention of the academy, his interest piqued. He had witnessed the duel earlier and couldn't deny the allure of learning alongside such talented individuals.

Rolf continued, his tone growing more serious. "However, there is something you should know before you get your hopes up. The academy is very expensive, and attending it may be out of reach for someone in your current financial situation. Most people who go there are from very well off families. You would need to save up for years, and even then, it might not be enough."

Liam's heart sank at the mention of the costs involved, but Rolf wasn't finished. "Besides the financial aspect, you'd also need to pass a rigorous entrance exam to gain admission. They test for magical aptitude, physical prowess, and mental acuity. It won't be easy, but if you're truly determined, you can work towards it."

Rolf leaned in, lowering his voice as he shared his advice with Liam. "Look, lad, if you truly want to make enough money and gain valuable experience to attend the academy, I'd suggest joining the city's adventure guild. It's called the 'Vanguard Coalition.'"

Liam listened attentively, curious about this new opportunity. "They're a well-respected organization. Members take on various missions and assignments, which will help you hone your skills and grow stronger. Plus, the pay is considerably better than most jobs in the city for somebody with your skills.”

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

Rolf continued, "There's a small catch, though. The guild only accepts new members for a week after each new moon. That means you'll have to wait a few weeks before you can apply to join."

Liam, eager to start his journey toward the academy, nodded in understanding. "That's fine. I can wait."

Seeing Liam's determination, Rolf offered him a solution to make use of the waiting time. "In the meantime, I could use some extra help here at the tavern during the night shift. It won't pay as much as the guild, but it'll give you a little extra cash and help you stay occupied while you wait for the recruitment window."

Grateful for the opportunity, Liam accepted Rolf's offer.

Liam's first night working at The Slumbering Drake was a whirlwind of activity. As the evening set in, the tavern filled with patrons of all kinds. Adventurers, travelers, merchants, and locals gathered to exchange stories and unwind after long days of work and exploration.

Nervous but determined, Liam donned a simple apron provided by Rolf and started by helping with some basic tasks. He cleared tables, collected empty glasses, and occasionally wiped down the wooden counter. As the night wore on, he found himself becoming more comfortable in his new role, even managing to strike up conversations with some of the patrons.

The lively atmosphere of the tavern was infectious. Laughter filled the air, punctuated by the occasional argument or boastful tale. The room was lit by the warm glow of lanterns, and the smell of roasted meat, freshly baked bread, and spiced ale drifted through the air. Magical effects occasionally burst forth, casting colorful glimmers of light across the room, as patrons showed off their abilities or entertained their companions.

The night wore on, and Liam's legs began to ache from being on his feet for so long, but he pushed through the exhaustion. Rolf offered him a few words of encouragement, praising his hard work and resilience. Liam felt a sense of pride swelling within him, as well as a sense of belonging that he hadn't experienced in a long time.

As the last patrons left the tavern and the first light of dawn crept into the sky, Liam's first night at The Slumbering Drake drew to a close. Exhausted but satisfied, he collapsed into his bed. Before drifting off to sleep he summons his status.

On Liam's second shift at the tavern, a familiar face entered through the door. It was Elara, with her vibrant red hair and freckled face, looking grateful and radiant as she made her way over to Liam. She approached him with a warm smile, making sure not to draw too much attention to their conversation.

"Liam," she said softly, "I wanted to thank you for the potion. My mother's health has improved significantly, and I can't express how grateful I am." She paused, choosing her words carefully, "I won't pry into how you acquired it, but just know that you've made a huge difference in our lives."

Liam felt a mix of relief and happiness at hearing Elara's words. He knew he had done the right thing, regardless of the means he used to obtain the medicine.

Liam's eyes glimmered with determination as he shared his aspirations with Elara. "I've been thinking a lot lately, and I've decided that I want to join the academy. I want to become stronger so I can protect myself and others. I've seen so many people suffering, and I want to be able to help them," he said, his voice filled with resolve.

Elara's eyes widened with surprise, but then softened with understanding. "That's a noble goal, Liam," she replied, nodding in approval.

Liam smiled gratefully at Elara, feeling reassured and motivated by her words of encouragement.

Liam and Elara chatted easily as the night went on, sharing stories and laughter while he worked. They talked about their childhood memories, their hopes and dreams, and even their fears. Their conversation was light and genuine, bringing them closer as friends.

After a while, Elara glanced at the rune inscribed clock hanging on the wall, realizing that time had flown by. "I should probably get going, Liam. I need to check on my mother and make sure she's doing alright," she said, a hint of concern in her voice.

Liam nodded understandingly, a warm smile on his face. "Of course, Elara. I hope your mother continues to improve. Take care, and I'll see you soon."

Elara returned the smile, her eyes filled with gratitude. "Thank you, Liam. I'm sure she will, thanks to your help. Have a good night, and good luck with your work here."

With that, Elara waved goodbye and left the tavern, her presence lingering in Liam's mind as he returned to his duties. He felt grateful for her friendship and support.

One evening, after closing the tavern, Rolf sat down with Liam to discuss his goals of becoming stronger. Rolf understood that physical strength was a crucial part of self-improvement, especially for someone who wanted to attend the academy and join the adventure guild.

"Listen, Liam," Rolf began, his eyes serious but kind. "If you truly want to become stronger, you must not only train your magical abilities but also your body. A strong body will serve as the foundation for your skills and help you endure the challenges ahead."

Rolf demonstrated a few exercises that Liam could do daily to improve his strength and stamina. These included push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and basic stretches that would increase his flexibility. "Make sure you practice these exercises consistently, and you'll see progress in no time," Rolf advised.

He also emphasized the importance of proper nutrition. "A well-balanced diet is key to supporting your training. Starting tomorrow, I'll provide you with healthier meals here at the tavern. We'll focus on protein-rich foods, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to fuel your growth. You are still very thin, and we need to get some more meat on your bones."

“I suggest you also use some of your pay to buy better meat from awakened monsters. The spiritually infused meat will do wonders for your core.”

Liam listened attentively to Rolf's advice, grateful for his guidance and support. He was determined to follow the training regimen and improve his diet.

Over the next week, Liam settled into a new routine. During the day, he continued his work as a courier, delivering packages and letters throughout the city. He honed his skills, learning the fastest routes and navigating the bustling streets with growing confidence. The income from his courier job, combined with the additional earnings from working at The Slumbering Drake, began to accumulate, though it was still a long way from being enough for the academy fees.

In the evenings, Liam worked at the tavern under Rolf's guidance. He learned to serve drinks and food with a steady hand, even when the tavern was at its busiest. He became more adept at striking up conversations with the patrons, asking them about their adventures and soaking up their wisdom. He listened intently to tales of daring quests and epic battles, all the while mentally noting techniques and strategies that he could one day use himself.

Occasionally, Liam managed to steal a few moments to visit Elara and her family, growing closer to them as they shared meals and stories. Seeing the gratitude in their eyes whenever he arrived, he felt a renewed sense of purpose. He was determined to help them in any way he could, and this newfound goal only fueled his desire to become stronger.

In his limited spare time, Liam practiced training his body, using basic exercises and stretches to improve his strength and stamina. After a week his skinny frame had bulked up slightly with lean muscle. He was now able to keep up with most of the other couriers, except for a similar aged boy called Ander who awakened an air spirit.

Liam promised to himself that he would beat Ander in raw speed by the time he could join the Vanguard Coalition in a few weeks.
