Prologue

Sitting on top of a hundred feet high wall and watching the sunset with others is a pretty good idea, but not today.

Today the wall that would have been a great spot for enjoyment is full of panic and prayers.

The blessed and the abandoned are standing together becoming the last line of defense to protect humanity from it’s extinction .

Gazing at the distant dust cloud I could see the monster generals slowly appearing out of it.

The preparations and prayers continued, And within all this commotion a familiar voice caught my attention.

I turned my attention away from the appending doom and diverted my attention to the owner of the voice.

I turned around to see my brother Eldon pointing his unsheathed sword at me.

I too summoned a weapon ,and leaped forward as I swung my sword as I spoke “ Welcome to the Graveyard ,Brother.”

Our swords clashed a few times and I leaped back.

I used my magic to slow down my time perception and now I could see everything hapeing around me within split seconds.

I could see everything from the soldiers getting the cannons ready, sorcerers preparing their spells, mercenaries preparing themselves for their deaths, to the monster army marching closer and closer, and at last I could see.

My brother swinging his sword with intent to kill me.

I dodged and leaped back.

He began gathering mana and his sword lit up with purple flames all around it.

I put my hand on my face and he began laughing.

He jumped and swung his flaming sword as he spoke “Oh! Poor Azlan you still can’t get over that day.”

He swung his sword relentlessly and with time I was gaining distance but that only helped him gain the upperhand.

The swing of his sword were now turning into projectiles each slash was flying towards me I dodged them to the best of my capacity.

But I couldn’t block all as some of them managed to hit me.

I was injured and fell to the ground, There I was laying I could hear everything going around me very clearly.

I could hear the rolling wheels of the cannon, the prayers of desperation, the sound of the marching footsteps and blaring sound of the monster warhorns.

The last caused me to get back up on my feet.

I shouldn’t have done this but I turned my back to my opponent to look at how far the monsters have reached.

They were dangerously close so much so that I could make out the individual troops out of the army of thousands of monsters.

I understood that it was time to put this duel to an end and to focus on the more pressing issue at hand.

I turned back to my brother who was charging towards me.

He swung his sword and I stepped to the side and dodged.

“This duel is pointless brother just help me defeat these monsters.”I pleaded him.

He again swung his sword our swords clashed, the flame of his sword was damaging mine.

Eldon started speaking “This battlefield is going to be our last as none of us are going to make it out alive.” He continued “So die by hands rather than at hands of the monsters, think Azlan think.”

I very well knew that the only way I would exit this battlefield would be in a casket, but that didn’t mean I would just give up my life.

I leaped back and used mana and strengthened my body and started charging towards him.

I swung my damaged sword relentlessly pushing him back slowly and gathering mana at same time.

We were reaching the monster end of the wall.

He finally started stopping my attack and maintained his stance at single place, but it was too late.

I casted my chain magic, Blue colored chains began rising from the ground and slowly wrapping around his body.

He tried to run away but couldn’t, so I turned my attention from him to the approaching monsters.

I could hear the sounds of struggle coming from behind but I didn’t turn back because I knew that he won’t be able to break free, from the chains that froze the flow of time.

I ignored every single movement made by him and addressed everyone gathered there.

“ The battle that we have gathered here for is about to begin, All of us have our reasons to be here, The mercenaries have sold their lives to put food on the tables, The soldiers are standing here to protect the continent and The sorcerers and the mages might be here for a more noble cause.” I continued “But none of that matters because our combined goal is protect humanity till our very last breath”

I turned around towards the approaching monsters cloud and spoke “You see that dust cloud slowly approaching us, That is full of monsters who have only one goal that is to slaughter as many humans as they can.” Then I turned around and pointed towards the other end of the wall and spoke “And there lies everything that we are fighting for.”

I continued “So today we all fight with our lives on the line to protect the ones we love and ones who we hate”

I began issuing orders “All ranged units take positions and fire at will kill as many monsters as you can.”

With our first cannon fire accompanied the war declaration by monster generals and the war had begun from both sides.

The monsters started rushing towards the walls while the shamans and the ranged attackers were shooting projectiles trying to take attention of the ranged units towards them.

After the speech I walked over to my brother who was still bound by chains.

He struggled but to no avail.

I handed him a runestone as I slowly whispered in his “Don’t die on me my Knight.”

The chains around him turned to dust and disappeared and I pushed him off the edge of the wall.

I could see him falling to his doom at the hands of the monsters that were gathering over there, but I didn’t feel any remorse yet I spoke a few words of encouragement for him,

“May your God be with you.”
