Make hay while the sun shines
He noticed that the people didn't even look at the tree as they passed by and it's not that he expected them to but it was till strange, it was like it was invisible. Odion was in front the tree now and he noticed a wooden placard that looked like it had been nailed into the soft earth. It read: This tree was generously donated by our sponsors, Hues Inc. Odion looked at the tree and wondered how it had even survived this long and how the "generous sponsors" could even leave the tree to die.
Something happened then and it was like Odion's eyes adjusted more. There was a long chain that seemed to be made of pure light and it strung from the highest branch and went all the way down to its roots where it was tied around a turtle that seemed to be trying to climb the tree but each time it kept falling.
Odion felt something now that he was so close and he knew deep in himself without a doubt that that beam of light was the golden chain of creation. He bent down to pick untie the chain from the turtle when he heard muttering. "I have to get back up...stupid god...must get back...danger."

Odion whipped is head around to see who had spoken but no one was even around him, let alone paying attention to him. He turned to the turtle and out two and two together. "Well, here we go." He said, thinking to himself if maybe a talking turtle was the strangest thing he had seen so far on his journey. He bent lower and to try and listen more to what the turtle what saying but no luck, just more gibberish.
The turtle was big, Odion thought, its skin green and scaly but the shell was brightly coloured with warm greens and cold blues with dashes of red. Odion found it beautiful in a strange way. The same way you could look at abstract art and marvel at the absurdity, admiring the beauty within the chaos. Odion looked closely at the turtle and he noticed that something was wrong with its features. He brought his head just near the turtle's as it made its Sisyphean journey back on the tree trunk and he looked at the face.
It was the eyes, they seemed more sentient than a normal turtle's, not that he was an expert. They seemed almost... human.
He whispered to himself. "What are you?" as he brought his right-hand close to the animal's body where the chain was wrapped around before realising why that was a bad idea.
As soon as his fingers touched the turtle's shell, his mind seemed to shift a bit, welcoming the mind of another, a lifetime's worth. His whole body went numb as he was taken to another time, another experience, another life.
