Book 1 Ch 11: Indoor Oasis

CHAPTER 11: INDOOR OASIS

Duke was feeling partially confused with the entire situation. Confused and a little annoyed but never angry. No, never show anger against a human being. It was one of the key rules that his mother had taught him over the decades to follow, if he did so then he would be targeted and locked away.

‘Banana, with wood and water becomes a tree.’

Not in anything so mundane as a normal prison but possibly back where he had been found by her more than seven decades ago. He shuddered at the thought, it had been so boring, no magic, nothing new.

He was inside the interrogation room with the door now fully closed and the monitoring devices now fully shut down.

His annoyance had come from the fact that a female police officer had first shown a complete lack of reaction against him, although it was his fault for trying to be petty in the first place and secondly because she had promised to bring him back another bar of chocolate.

No. That’s not right. She was kind. Wasn’t she?

Duke knew that the use of his magic tricks should have been slightly more regulated, the more that he applied them the less he cared about human interaction and behaviour.

The rules were established for him by the Professor for a strict reason. The inside of the room was slowly being altered to resemble a desert setting, closer to an oasis. Moisture within the air and walls was used along with a small hole extended into the concrete floor.

Being arrested and bought into a police station under armed guard without being read his rights or any other explanation was one thing but removing him from a convenience store before he had purchased enough chocolate? Unforgivable.

The threats made to his friends although attempted to be more personal and cause him to lose his temper and react were little more than distractions. In the eyes of Duke, if you attacked a friend then it would be the same as attacking him. The small loss of a hand or in the case of the woman who could perform magic another eye would be a fitting form of retribution.

He didn’t quite understand how she could do magic without enhancement, he remembered at the time a small voice had been calling out to him but he had paid it no heed.

He considered working a magic trick to cause some further distraction in the police station interrogation holding room. The table he had caused to break along with a chair had been out of sheer anxiety rather than anger. All that he wanted at this time was to return to the museum basement to translate and work with his friends who were also his colleagues Marcus and Zarisa.

He stretched out his arm in front of him and decided that if he was not under arrest and no other conflict was in place then he would be leaving in peace and harmony.

His mother would be concerned about him he knew if he showed further signs of distress and out of respect for her, he would try his best to stick to the framework and rules that she had worked so hard for.

I respect my mum and wish her no harm.
