Chapter III

A/N :  I will be taking some time to organize my story so I don't write myself into a roadblock. This will ensure I continuously write at least a chapter per week instead of hiatusing because I don't know where to go next or where to end. This should be done by tuesday(Its sunday night now). This will lead to slight changes in previous/current chapter that will be small enough for me to note in the next chapter so you won't have to reread for small details.  If there are any problems, please note in the comments.

*** is to note slight changes in perspective or focus

Chapter III

From what I heard from Sarena, the king looked like a middle-aged man, but he was actually over 400 years old. He was a grandmaster in combat, while only average with magic. He was also my grandpa.

Unlike the other kingdoms, Kaltar was ruled by a king who had transcended and gained an extended life. This was mostly due to the fact that most princes and princesses sit on their asses and relied on servants and guards to protect them. In other words, they never worked hard enough to transcend. The king of Kaltar was an exception in the last millennium. This resulted in him ruling over Kaltar for over 300 years.

Also, thanks to this structure, it had been uncertain on how the king would transfer power or if he would transfer power at all. It was only ten years ago that the king announced his intentions of transferring power. However, it was not one of his sons that he would transfer power to, but one of his sons' sons. No one knew why, but that was the old king's decision.

The nurse was sweating profusely as she walked down the long hall. She looked down into my face every few seconds.

I wonder what she's thinking.

I think she's worried about what this visit means for you Princess. [Meleru]

Don't call me that. Brings up bad memories.

How long did you know I was here? You don't seem surprised.[Meleru]

Since the beginning. Your presence in my soul is unsettling. It always made me uncomfortable. It feels..wrong.

Then why'd you cry like a baby if you knew you weren't alone. [Meleru]

bad memories? You need to get over it in this life. What's done is done. [Meleru]

I'm sorry.

It's okay. [Meleru]

I was truly sorry about Meleru. Not just because of my moping around, but also for wasting her life.

It was my decision to stay with your brother. If he got any worse, I would have left myself. Now, master! Do you know you're a boy?! [Meleru]

I could feel her creepy grin. It made me shiver. She was smiling for a childish reason though. Before she was a sword, she was many other things, but most of all, a woman. In those times, she held great reverence for me and also a burning competitiveness. She would boast her beauty in front of me. I would, in turn, overshadow or match her. It was a game.

I know I'm a boy Meleru. It's no different from when I was a shapeshifter. I turned into a male multiple times.

But you were still a woman underneath. [Meleru]

doesn't matter.

You're no fun! Whatever. At least make me a female. [Meleru]

A treacherous thought crossed my mind.

Don't even think about it. [Meleru]

I wondered what the fastest way would be to get Meleru a human body. I really wanted her out of my body. I can't deal with her this way. At least, in physical form, I could tie her down and run away.

I could make her a body, but I'm not sure if this world would make it possible. I also wasn't exactly sure about the “possibilities” Lucis spoke of. If I could make a body here, it wouldn't be human.

Meleru, is it important that you're human?

No. You should know that. I've been many things. The only one I didn't like being was an orc. I really thought the gods hated me then. [Meleru]

I was actually wondering what kind of lifespan you would want. Humans die earlier than most races. Other live for thousands of years. I'll make you a viserati if it's possible. Viserati live as long a elves do.

What's a viserati? [Meleru]

Oh yeah, I never told you guys about it. After a while, I got tired of doing the whole process of reincarnation. My solution was a viserati. Its a body made using a beast core, the hair of a human or elf, and the blood of a human or elf(both male and female). Only certain environments allow the creation of a viserati. I made mines between the ages of 4 and 7. It made it easier than dealing with family and it needed less material. Whenever I reincarnated into a world with a viserati I created, I would gravitate my soul towards it. However most of the bodies were already in use by the time I came back. Those damn gods began using them as vessels for souls they took interest in. Soon enough, all my hard work amounted to nothing.

Calm down. Is that why you didn't tell us? [Meleru]

Yes partially. I tested it out for a few rounds, but then the gods started stealing them left and right. I really hate those gods. If I could just—

“What a menacing little thing” a deep voice boomed out.

***

The nurse was in front of the king bowing with the baby in her hands. As the king spoke, she looked down at the baby's face. His face was scrunched up in anger with tears gleaming at the side of his eyes. As the king finished speaking, the baby's face changed rapidly to that of surprise then one of curiosity as it tried to push its head up to see the owner of the voice.

“Hand him to me” the king said.

“Yes, your majesty” the nurse fumbled as she conjured the courage to ascend the stairs leading to the king on his throne. However, when she stepped froward, a guard in fully black clothing and a mask stepped forward and motioned for her to give him/her the baby. The nurse reluctantly handed the baby to the guard. The guard then handed the baby to the king.

The king was a tall man. He was over 6ft tall. He looked like he was in his late 40s. He had dirty blonde hair and red eyes. He looked imposing from the neck up. His commoner's attire did not make him look any less imposing, but at the sight of it, the baby laughed. This caused the king to smile. As quickly as the laugh came out, silence followed. It had been a while since he last held a baby.

“Nurse, tell me, is what Sarena told me correct? I do not think she lies, but I know she can jump to conclusions sometimes. Did my son not give you what was needed to care for this child?”

The nurse was sweating. She knew she would end up face down under water or stabbed in the night. There was no way she could confirm what Sarena had said.

The king looked at her conflicted facial expression and made his own conclusion.

“So it is true. You may leave.”

The king grimaced as he looked down on the sleeping child. He couldn't help but think that his son truly was the trash he had long since despised.

The king cared for his son, but over the years he had come to realize something. He was corrupted. He had three sons and two daughters. Both daughters were married off to someone of their own choice. The sons chose their own brides as well, but remained in the kingdom. Over the years, the king noticed Prince Calir was getting highly competitive. He showed sides uglier than a demon. Despite him telling Prince Calir that his choice of crown prince would not be influenced by politics, Calir got it in their heads that those with the most reach would be chosen. It led to the situation at hand; Prince Calir and Princess Adrianna neglecting a child because of their endless struggle to one-up the kings' other sons.

The king had trouble understanding the depth of his son's stupidity. What would one more son hurt?

What hurt the king the most was that his son let the matter taint his children as well. Most of Calir's children no longer viewed him as grandpa. They saw him as someone they had to suck up to to win a game or gain power. It resulted in the king no longer asking to see Calir's male children. His granddaughters were fine, though some of them constantly talked about how great their male siblings were in his presence.

A pang of guilt clouded his conscience as he looked down at the sleeping child. He was the reason it wasn't wanted. Along with guilt, he felt anger towards his son Calir.

“Bring me Calir and Adrianna now. Then tell the three royal families to meet here in the next hour.”
