And So it Begins.

Chapter 1

My name is Ayane Christine Sasaki. There were only three people, my parents (Rachel Ryder and Shin Sasaki) and cousin (Luna Violet), who are allowed to call me Ayane, or Aya for short. The others know me by my English name Skye Katherine Ryder or just Skye. I am half-American and half-Japanese.

When Luna and I were much younger, our parents discovered our different powers. While Luna was found to be a great strategist, I displayed healing abilities. She showed a great affinity with Pure Power while I was linked with Water. Our parents were thrilled. Quietly, they taught us how to control our powers and we became skilled at not only using them but also hiding and suppressing them.

The day one of my friends found out about their ability, it was the last day before mid-winter break. But to me, it was just a normal day of high school. However, I never knew how wrong I was.

“Good morning, darling,” a soft voice greeted me as I started to stir and returned to the world of consciousness. I moaned into the pillow, not wanting to open my eyes. “Aya…” the beautiful voice continued. “School starts in an hour, time to get ready. I’ll go prepare breakfast.”

I smiled sleepily as the other person pressed a gentle kiss on my cheek before the door clicked shut. I blinked tiredly and struggled to open my hazel eyes. Shuffling to the closet, I blindly felt around for a change of clothes and used my sense of touch to lead me to the bathroom for a shower.

I emerged from the shower 15 minutes later dressed in a light blue t-shirt with abstract designs, a black pair of skinny jeans and a dark blue jacket. My brown hair was tied into a high ponytail with my silver streak just tucked behind my right ear. Smiling at my appearance, I walked out of the room and into the living room only to be lured by the aroma of breakfast to the kitchen.

With soft and light footsteps, I made my way to the female figure standing at the counter and wrapped my arms around her waist. She giggled a little, unfazed by the hug. My heart thumped. Her laughter sounded like ringing bells.

“Good morning, sweetheart,” I responded, tucking my head where her shoulders met her neck, nuzzling her.

“Good morning! So nicknames today?” She asked, turning to face me, her silver eyes twinkling in laughter. She turned up to meet my lips before pulling away.

“Whatever you want.”

“Then no. Aya, could you set the table?”

“Luna, you still use the short form of my name which still counts,” I pouted at her but got the plates and utensils out regardless.

“Aya, you know I don’t play fair.”

To which I laughed, stalking away to the dinning room to set the table.

Luna entered the dining room with two trays. I couldn’t help but pout again. Just how does she make it look so effortless? One of the trays contained two plates while the other contained our drinks. She placed one plate in front of me and a cup of coffee before sitting opposite me. I bit into one of the two slices of butter toasts and moaned. It was perfectly crunchy and buttery. In addition to the toast, there were two sassages, a few strips of bacon and scrambled eggs.

“Luna, marry me already.”

Luna giggled. “Is my cooking that good?”

“Better than mom’s for sure,” I said as I took a slip of coffee. Luna giggled more and nodded.

“We’re already living together and our parents already approve of us. All that is left to do is get a ring and set a wedding date.”

“Let’s go get rings this weekend,” I told her and she giggled again. We passed breakfast with pleasant conversation, light teasing and laughter.

Luna and I have been together as long as either of us can remember. Since our parents were childhood friends, we grew very close. In addition, both of us were the same age. Soon after her eighteenth birthday (which was a few weeks ago), Luna’s parents gifted her a house somewhat near our high school and a car. Asking my parents for permission, I soon started living with her. Both of us work part-time so we have a good and steady income to live comfortably. Since I was still a minor, my parents helped with living expenses as well. I usually just take that money they gave me and stick half of the cash into my bank account. After all, the money they gave me is more than enough for living expenses.

It was February and therefore, winter. Luna and I wrapped up warmly before climbing into her car.

The day at school went on as usual until the middle of the day when we were changing classrooms. We ran into Dylan. He didn’t say much and only had asked to meet me at the school lobby after school. I shrugged and readily agreed. After all, we were very close friends. As he headed back to class, Luna and I continued on to our next class, Astronomy.

School dragged on and I was getting impatient. Since Dylan didn’t really give me or tell me any details, I was curious about what he wanted to tell me. Since one of our best friends, Jessica, called in sick for the day, I couldn’t ask her.

Both Luna and I had our lunch period as the last class and since we were both seniors, we would usually go out for lunch. However, for that day, I met up with Luna at the rooftop. She had made our lunchbox for the day. When we were done, we just sat beside each other with soft brush and gentle touches. We didn’t need any words, we were just enjoying each other’s company and sharing our warmth.

“Luna, are you coming with me to meet with Dylan now?” I asked when the bell rang, signally the end of school for the day at 2pm.

“I would love to but I can’t,” Luna gave me an apologetic smile. “Mrs. Vin wanted me to speak to me after school. But I can pick you up afterwards.”

“I’ll text you when I’m done,” I decided.

“I’ll just pick you up along the way home.”

We walked to the first floor anyway. Before she left, Luna gave me a small kiss on the cheek. I was left smiling like an idiot as she headed towards the teacher’s office. It took me about 30 seconds to recover.

‘I swear, I love her…’ I thought to myself, blushing slightly.

After waiting for five minutes, I recognized a familiar mop of brown hair. I smiled before waving him over.

“Hey, Dylan!” I called out to him when he was a few feet away from me. “So what did you need?”

“Skye, we need to talk...”
