Chapter 1: The prodigy

Chapter 1

Composed.

That was the one word needed to describe Taiyo. Usually, Flame mado-shi, also known as people that can wield the element of fire, have to use the sun to bend fire to their will. Only after a child becomes 14 years old, do they usually start to build up their own elemental power. Training to build up your element was vigorous and took commitment.

By the time you are 18, were you able to even stand a chance against the wild life after the sunset. However, Taiyo, at the peak age of 16, was able to bend fire to his will, and maintain its ferociousness as well as young army officers were.

As Taiyo was slogging himself up a hill, he took a glimpse at the sunset. He was slowly starting to feel the cold air from the damp mud around him crawl up his back.

“Dusk is approaching. I should get back soon” he muttered to himself. He kneeled down, letting the dead animal on his back down. He rolled down his sleeve to reveal a thermometer attached to his forearm. It read 41 degrees celsius

He smiled. He loosened up his body and rested on the damp mud beneath him. He was delighted knowing that he had been able to keep his body temperature consistently high to utilize his element better.

He got right back up and hoisted the dead animal back onto his back. It was a crimson wolf. Extremely fast creatures that were rumored a bite that would leave a 2nd degree burn on you for week. Yet, Taiyo had simply killed it.

'My progress seems to be pretty good right now. The elders should be happy with my progress so far'.

Suddenly, Taiyo heard a twig snap behind him. He froze.

'Something’s behind me. Did I get tailed?'

He turned around, expecting to see something. But nothing, he stood still for a few seconds, calmly thinking about his next move. Then, they appeared.

First, he saw one from the corner of his eye. Then he glanced at 2 more and felt another presence behind him. He had been followed by a pack of crimson wolves. They slowly circled him, snarling and growling at Taiyo, whilst he calmly analyzed the situation, keeping his calm.

Without warning, one of the wolves suddenly lunged at him. He swiftly ducked under it and let the dead wolf from his back down.

“I suppose you all aren't very happy that I may have killed someone dear to you right? But its ok. You’ll get over it” he said softly

The wolves were now practically flashing their teeth at him, with their boiling, dripping saliva leaving a mark on the cold, damn mud.

His hands suddenly combust into flames, revealing gauntlets made of fire. His expression also changed. His calm and kind face had turned into a more serious one.

Without warning, the first wolf charged at him. Taiyo simply clenched his hand, and got into a fighting stance. The wolf jumped towards him, baring its teeth and claws, with the intention to kill, only to get blown away by a blast of fire atleast 4 meters long and 3 meters wide from Taiyo’s fist. The three other wolves made no sound. Just silently watched the first wolf run away. Then, they all sprinted at him. Taiyo swiftly put his arm opposite to the right side of his face, as he was going to defend against an attack. But he instead whipped his hand sideways, creating a ring of fire around him.

The wolves, now startled, began to backpedal. But before they could get a chance to think, Taiyo covered his mouth and began to breathe fire at him. Almost like a dragon. 2 of the wolves were hit by the fire, whereas the third one dodged by a stroke of luck. While the other 2 wolves retreated, dashing towards a nearby river, the third wolf tried to attack Taiyo from behind. However, Taiyo simply sidestepped the wolf, and kicked it away, following his kick up with a concentrated blast to scare it away.

Taiyo then swiftly carried the wolf he dropped in the beginning, getting rid of his makeshift fire gauntlets in the process. While he was making sure he hadn't dropped anything, he saw the wolf he blown away in the beginning. It was lying on its side. Dead. He huffed, walked over to it, and strapped it into his back alongside he wolf he had killed before.

He slowly started to walk home, carrying the 2 dead wolves.

“The world is cruel” He thought, while looking at the wolves who had lost their life by his hands. He looked up, and noticed that he was nearing the village. “But it's also beautiful..” His lips perked up, forming a crooked smile.

Upon reaching his house, He looked around his village. Many of the house's were run down with pieces of wood dangling by their sides like lifeless animal limbs. Due to the recent rain spells, a lot of the soil had been washed away with no one to help. "If only the war didn't happen...." He thought. "If only we had received aid and weren't forgotten. I'll make sure that this country returns to it's former glory. I will make sure that this village prospers once again".

He opened his house’s door and yelled "I'm home!"
