Volume 1: What? Chapter 3 - The Second Floor

Standing in front of the stairs, the Skeleton Walker saw a transparent wall in front of him. Trying to touch this transparent wall, it instead saw that its hands went straight through the wall. Moving forward, its entire body went through the wall without much thought.

Walking down the steps, the Skeleton Walker wondered what it would find at the end of the stairs. The first floor being the only place it had seen throughout its short life, it was curious about what the new area would look like.

Entering the second floor of the dungeon, it saw that the area looked similar to the first area of the previous floor. Neither disappointed nor surprised, as it did not know any other design or appearance to look forward to despite its expectation for a new look; the Skeleton Walker started moving forward on the new floor.

In front of it, the Skeleton Walker saw a slime bouncing toward it. The Skeleton Walker tried to pick it up, thinking it was the same type of slime as the one from the previous floor. However, the slime rocketed towards it, and this unexpected attack detached the Skeleton Walker’s head from its body.

The surprise didn’t last long as the Skeleton Walker, with its head a foot or two behind its body, stabbed the slime with the spear in its right hand. Raising the slime stuck on the spear's tip, the Skeleton Walker walked towards its head and placed it back in its rightful place.

With its head back in place, the Skeleton Walker looked at the slime and saw that its name was just ‘Slime’. “What is the difference?” wondered the Skeleton Walker between the Green Slime and this Slime. They both looked the same in its hollow eyes, with the only difference being the hostility shown by the Slime.

However, its thought regarding their difference stopped when it saw that the slime was still alive as it fell down the spear and started attacking again. This time though, the Skeleton Walker dodged the attack, seeing the obvious change in motion from the slime and also because it was still stuck on the spear.

“Why is it not dead?” thought the Skeleton Walker. Rotating the spear, the Skeleton Walker took a look at the slime. Noticing a small, shiny ball inside the slime, it pinned the slime down on the ground. Dropping the three spears from its left arm, it picked up one and stabbed the shiny ball, destroying it. In response to the ball getting crushed, the slime started getting flaccid before finally evaporating.

“You have discovered ‘weakness’.” appeared right where the slime vaporized. “A weakness. Do I have it?” thought the Skeleton Walker as it picked up the other spears that it dropped. The Skeleton Walker knew that it lacked something, but was not sure of what it was. Thinking that its weakness would be revealed later, the Skeleton Walker continued venturing into the 2nd floor.

A few meters later, the Skeleton Walker saw multiple slimes on the ground. Still unable to distinguish whether they were Green Slime or Slime, the Skeleton Walker thrust its spear at the closest slime, hitting its core easily as the slime was not moving. The other slimes immediately reacted to the death of their kin and started lunging toward the murderer of their friend.

Quickly overwhelming the Skeleton Walker, the slimes clutched onto its legs, slowly dissolving them. Now on the ground and unable to move its legs, the Skeleton Walker grabbed two of the fallen spears and started stabbing the slime cores easily as they were motionless. However, due to its stabbing form being ineffective during the current situation, the speed at which the slimes dropped dead was considerably slow.

After a minute, the constant stabs finally freed its legs. Seeing parts of its legs with chunks missing, the Skeleton Walker realized the troubles of facing multiple enemies. “You have now partially understood the ‘way of fighting”. The Skeleton Walker did not really bother to think much about this new knowledge since it seemed simpler than the other notifications it had gotten.

Trying to stand up and start moving again, the partly dissolved legs broke into different parts, tumbling down the Skeleton Walker. It stared at the broken parts as they slowly fixed themselves until finally the Skeleton Walker got back up and continued moving forward through the slime-infested dungeon.

Continuously stabbing every slime it encountered, the Skeleton Walker kept going forward until it met those like him again. The Skeleton Walkers it met this time were different. They were equipped with weapons and shields. Dropping down the spears it hung onto on its left arm the Skeleton Walker tried to take the shield of one of its kind who without any resistance let go of its shield. As they did not show any hostility according to the Skeleton Walker’s understanding of the concept, it left them alone and continued onward the path.

After strolling for a few minutes, the Skeleton Walker came upon the stairs to the next floor. Thinking that simply following the road was enough to lead him to the stairs, it walked down to the third floor of the dungeon.
