Ian got right to it and created a newborn goblin. Early evolutions required less mana, so he infused mana into specific body parts to direct his envisioned evolution. Strength attribute was infused into the three different types of muscle fibers, the connective tissues, and the bones. Light and space attributes were infused into the brain and mana pathways. Ian was able to successfully open some minor mana gates with the infusion. Hopefully that would lead to a mage evolution. A minor infusion of the three mana attributes over the entire body finished the process. The newborn goblin was on the precipice of too much mana, and cried at the uncomfortable feeling. He felt bad for the baby goblin and quickly evolved it into a infant, and Ian repeated the same process with the infant until he got a child goblin. Afterwards, Ian switched to a general infusion of an equal portion of all three attributes. With seven targeted infusions, the mana cost was a lot higher than he initially suspected.
With general infusion of mana, Ian passed through the juvenile and adolescent stages of goblin evolution quickly. At the adult stage, he inspected its status for new skills.

A species of monster known for its high breeding rate, high growth rate, and vicious temperament. The goblin had the basic stench, tool use, bite, scratch, and night vision skills that the other goblins had when they evolved. The new goblin had lower skill levels compared to his compatriots, however. There was definitely a benefit to letting them develop on their own.
The sturdy body skill was new. It focused on increasing the durability of the physical body. Simple. Considering the goblin's attribute was strength and not neutral, Ian’s strength infusions seemed to be more heavily weighted. Ugh, that wasn’t good. Well, early evolutions had lower intelligence, so maybe light and space just didn’t have time to shine and expand through yet. With trepidation, Ian filled the goblin with the same ratio of mana as before. The resulting single available evolution was, Goblin Brawler. Well, shit.
He didn’t have any other choices, so with a sigh he chose the evolution. The muscles of the goblin became more defined. His height grew to three and a half feet, while his teeth and claws became sharper. After the evolution was finished, the new goblin looked like a meaner, male version of Mina. The new goblin stood stationary near the core with his eyes closed. The other five goblins were watching with fascination about ten feet away.

Tch, Brawl and an increase in other physical skills. It wasn’t unexpected, but still disappointing. The phrase ‘and other mana attributes’ in the description gave Ian hope that light and space weren’t being pushed to the side by strength. Continuing with the same mana ratio, he advanced into the next evolution. ….Goblin Fighter. Fuck.
As the evolution proceeded, the goblin’s muscles became larger like before, but there was no height change. The other major physical change was rather than a slight curve to the spine that most goblins had, he stood straighter, giving a more imposing look. Still no body hair though.

Still no light or space attributes, and only physical skills increased. However, Ian was becoming a little confused. A Goblin Fighter should not be E rank, it should be D rank. Also, any goblin fighters he had come across had the martial arts skill at level four minimum. Ian considered the lower skill levels a product of him forcing evolution, but maybe it was trying to compensate for a normally higher rank monster evolution. The last sentence of the description only added to his confusion. That same sentence, however, did add to his hope that light and space weren’t left behind. He didn’t know if changing the ratio of the three attributes would be better or worse, so he stuck with the equal ratio. Even if he ended up with a physical combat goblin, he’d deal with the consequences and figure things out.
With chagrin, the next evolution was a Goblin Warrior. Fighter to warrior was an admittedly odd evolutionary pathway, but Ian had seen it happen with class changes before, although rarely. However, the addition of a very unwarrior like skill brought a smile to Ian’s face.

Not much changed with the goblin warrior’s physical appearance besides a slight increase in size and muscle density. Mana perception showed the warrior’s mana flow had changed greatly. In fact, half the minor and sub gates exploded open, along with a major gate. An innate short range teleportation spell would need a lot of mana, but for it to happen so suddenly was certainly odd.
Usually Ian would ponder why, but he was squealing with delight over the fact he had created a goblin that could blink! He didn’t even need the use of spells, he could do it instantaneously! Well, the skill still used mana, so there was still a limit. But….Ian didn’t give a shit. A fucking blinking goblin. Fuck yeah. Ian grunted as he folded and pumped his right cover.
He froze suddenly. What other innate skills would the goblin get? Sturdy body for strength, blink for space, so he needed something for light. Fucking laser beams?! How could he make them come out of the eyes? Ian always enjoyed scaring the shit out of enemies with that and also burning them to death.
Ian’s intense excitement warped into immense concentration. If he infused a goblin’s entire being with light mana, would they succeed where he had failed? The amount of mana would be astronomical, since he most likely would need to make an EX rank monster. Becoming pure magic of different attributes had been another gateway into EX rank for him. He had technically succeeded in becoming light, but only the immense pain and damage to his body, combined with the addition of the spell to his status menu had given him any indication.
With a shake of his spine, Ian muttered to himself, “Not now, Ian, not now.”
When he was a dungeon with multiple stories and rumors about him, he could start creating EX rank monsters. Or at least give it a try.
With the knowledge that his infusion was working, just not in the way he originally planned, Ian proceeded onto the next evolution. As far as Ian noticed, there were no physical changes with this evolution. However, the mana flow changed once again and even more mana gates burst open. Ian was finally getting a semblance of what he wanted.

No laser beams, but invisibility was pretty good. It seemed the strength attribute would keep leveling the physical skills. Should he even try to make this goblin a mage? Even if it didn’t learn any magic during evolution, he could try to teach it. He was a shit teacher, but he could try. Why not teach physical combat? He was a SSS rank Mana Artist? Ha. No. Physical combat just came to him, he couldn’t teach that shit for the life of him. He reached SSS rank with just talent? Yeah he did, fuck off.
Hmm, memory crystals might work. But, if a mana heart of ten mana required ten million mana to create, then a memory crystal was liable to break the bank. Well, he would only need to spend the big mana once….maybe later. The B- rank goblin and the maze were more important.
The color of the goblin shifted to a darker green with the next evolution. While its skin color was darker, its teeth and claws became much cleaner and whiter. Sadly, with its eyes closed, Ian couldn’t see how they had changed. The mana flow didn’t change as with the previous two evolutions, but more mana gates burst along with another major one. As the goblin finished its evolution, Ian had a succession of window notifications.

Holy shit. What. No one has ever done that before? Really? Ian didn’t believe it. It never happened randomly? No dungeon suddenly decided that they were going to infuse a goblin with space and strength mana? Well, he did include light too, but it was a blink goblin, not a strong goblin, or a light goblin, a blink goblin! He knew high density ambient mana only occurred in single attributes, so being the first to create a blink goblin wasn’t the most unbelievable part. The fact that no one ever, in the history of the universe, had purposefully created a new creature astounded Ian. He assumed the gods weren’t included. Either there was something he was missing, in regards to the difficulty of what he was doing with his creatures, and/or dungeons were lazy as fuck. Ian would usually look at a horse’s teeth quite extensively even if it was a gift, but for now the horse had no mouth.

Ian rubbed his pages together in anticipation. If he already made a completely new monster, then the future evolutions must also be brand new.
The next evolution had no physical changes and only a few minor mana gates opened. However, the biggest change was something that Ian didn’t notice immediately, but Mina, Izu, and the three did. Ian’s vision encompassed his whole dungeon all the time, so he couldn’t notice it. What the five goblins noticed was the stationary goblin seemed to disappear from their peripheral vision, if they didn’t focus on it. In Ian’s discussion with the six goblins later, the first five brought it up, and he was reminded that there are always negatives to come with the positives.

There was no amazing new skill with the invisible blink goblin, but Ian still got the large amount of DP for a brand new creature. And seeing monsters evolve was always fulfilling even if they didn’t change much.
The goblin went through a drastic internal and external change with the next evolution. On the outside his skin color shifted to such a dark green that many would consider it black. However, perfect circles of white light ran down the outer edge of his arms. The normal goblin form shifted to four feet high with large and more dense muscles. The mana flow did not change, but another major mana gate, some sub gates, and the rest of the minor gates burst open. With so many mana gates open, normal monsters would have been at B- rank already, but the new skill the goblin acquired was quite the mana sink.

Ah, shifting space. The look on people’s faces when they were minding their own business kilometers away, and suddenly they were in the middle of a forest with a fist in front of their face. Good times. It was also fun, when face to face with someone, to swipe his arm in front of him and pretend he was erasing the space between them as he brought them closer. No matter how amusing it was to do that, he would have to make sure the goblin didn’t get into any bad habits while shifting.
Ian thought the new look for the goblin was cool. The circular lights would give him away in darkness, but he supposed that was what the invisibility skill was for. While Ian thought he was cool, the new goblin was still a goblin---so incredibly ugly by sapient race standards. He glanced at Mina and Izu. Obviously those standards didn’t apply to the goblins themselves.
Ian continued his evolutionary trek, but was met with surprise upon looking at the next evolutionary options. That’s right, ‘options’, plural. He’d only had one choice for each evolution so far, which would have normally peaved him a bit, but coolness had outweighed a lack of choices. Now, he was presented with choosing a Hobgoblin or a High Goblin.
The status windows for both confirmed Ian’s perceptions of them from when he was human. Hobgoblins were as tall as humans and had more human like features. This meant their features didn’t immediately repulse most sapient races. However, their skin color was still green, they still had pointed ears and noses, and they still had sharp claws and teeth. High Goblins, on the other hand, doubled down on their goblin features. The pointed ears became twice as long and curved backwards. Their noses elongated and curved downwards. Their claws became twice as long and obtained the ability to retract. They of course retained their trademark green skin, but instead of a normal green, they became a puke green. The one feature high goblins didn’t double down on was height. Rather than an average height of three feet, they averaged six feet.
The most important part that set Hobgoblins and High Goblins apart was their focus. Hobgoblins were more intelligent with more magic evolutions. While their strength was still stronger than their goblin brethren, they in no way matched up to the High Goblins. High Goblins were masses of muscle that could forcefully push back a fully armed Tank class of the same size. They were smarter than normal goblins, but couldn’t compare to the minds of Hobgoblins. Ian was left with the choice between strength and intelligence.
Considering his original intentions, choosing Hobgoblin was the only way to go. However, the focus on strength at the beginning of his current evolutionary path, made him take the time to debate between the two. In the end, Hobgoblin was the only choice. He had made magic his forte, and hobgoblins would have a better synergy with the light and space skills.
As with the previous evolution, a great physical shift occurred again. However, the previous internal shift did not occur. The hobgoblin reached five feet and eleven inches, with slightly pointed ears close to being elven. Beyond the angular nature of the nose, the face could be easily passed off as an odd half-elf. If the stationary hobgoblin still had the original green skin color, then it would not be so easy to pass off as a sapient race. At least the races Ian knew of. There was a slight increase in muscle density, but the largest increase in strength came from the overall increase in body size and spread of muscles. Finally, a pair of shorts had replaced the loincloth of the original goblins. Of course, the hobgoblin was still hairless.

Ian had made note of it earlier, but the stench skill that had been decreasing was finally gone. Losing skills was an uncommon phenomenon, but it normally occurred during large physical changes during evolution. As such, skills that could be lost were almost always biologically related in some way. In fact, it didn’t even require an evolution to lose a skill. Monsters with the night vision skill lost it after their eyes were removed. Ian could proudly proclaim this knowledge, as he had extensively tested it. Even though he no longer had the ability to smell, he was happy about the loss of the stench skill from a monster he intended to talk with a lot.
The addition of the stone skin skill was a bit odd to Ian. The hobgoblin already had so many strength skills, he didn’t really need another one. Also, getting a physical skill after getting the more magical oriented hobgoblin was eye roll worthy. This did mean there were two strength mana based skills, Stone Skin and Sturdy Body, along with the two space mana based skills, Blink and Shift, and the one or two light mana based skills, Invisibility and maybe Night Vision. Night vision had started as a racial skill, however, so it might not be considered a light mana based skill. If the hobgoblin got another light based skill, Ian would know at that time.
As Ian couldn’t talk to the hobgoblin before he finished evolving him, the only real indicators of his intelligence were the descriptions, Ian’s previous knowledge, and the tool use skill. Ian hoped the increase of Tool Use by two levels in one evolution indicated the high level of intelligence, as it was already at a B rank skill level in a C rank monster.
Ian wasn’t surprised by the loss of a title. Titles that depended on exclusivity often disappeared. One of a Kind likely disappeared because there wasn’t only one hobgoblin in the world. If this hobgoblin became another new race, then he was liable to get the title back. Most likely, First of a Kind was still around because this hobgoblin would always be the first blink goblin and subsequent variants.
Before he moved onto the next evolution, Ian had to lean his book back on the pedestal, and reminisce about how odd it was that this evolution was only called Hobgoblin. What normal hobgoblin could short range teleport, become invisible, shift space around them, and turn their skin into stone. He chuckled to himself. This was what made determining the danger of higher rank monsters so hard. The longer a monster lived the larger and more varied their skill composition would be. Comparing a freshly spawned hobgoblin with a hobgoblin that had evolved from a normal goblin, was like comparing a baby faced soldier with a grizzled veteran. Ian stood his book core back up and continued infusing.
Even though the next evolution required sixty million mana, the amount of changes were minimal. One sub mana gate opened and the hobgoblin’s muscle density increased slightly. This time the largest changes were in skill levels and a new skill.

The additional skill, flash, finally made the circles of white useful, beyond being cool and giving the hobgoblin away in the dark. Once the skill was used, the circles would release a blinding flash of light. Luckily this magical flash didn’t blind the user.
Flash proved that Ian was partially wrong about Night Vision being the second light mana skill. Now, would the new hobgoblin get more skills? Considering there was only one evolution left, probably not.
It was the last one, so Ian giggled to himself in anticipation. Would it follow the same goblin evolution path as previously, or would a new evolution variant arise? Hee hee.
The stationary hobgoblin grew two inches reaching six feet and one inch. The bone structure of his face became more prominent. Larger muscles condense slightly giving a more toned look. Sadly no more mana gates opened.

Okay. How the hell does the description know that? Ian just created this hobgoblin. He hasn’t even been in any battles.
“Hey, System, what the hell? Inferring a lot aren’t we?....Answer, blue face.”
Even after multiple rude remarks, some Ian felt he went too far with, the system didn’t respond.
As he moved on Ian muttered, “I know rules are important, but sticking to this one just seems kind of stupid.”
With pleasure, Ian allowed the new hobgoblin to form his consciousness. Even if he was being a hypocrite, Ian hoped the hobgoblin wasn’t like a normal hobgoblin personality wise.
The hobgoblin finally opened eyes, and what greeted the world were dark black irises filled with twinkling star like lights. Even Ian was amazed at the combined beauty and creepiness elicited by those eyes. The blink hobgoblin glanced throughout the core room resting on each new subject, but most prominently rested on the five goblins and Ian’s core. After his look around the room was done, the hobgoblin started doing stretches to get used his body.
While the hobgoblin was doing stretches, Ian wondered if he should be the one to start the conversation? ….He could wait. If the hobgoblin started to leave on his own, that was another matter.
The hobgoblin finished his stretches, turned to the core, and greeted Ian, “Hello, Dungeon Lord, what is it that you wish of me?”
Ian was surprised that this new hobgoblin greeted him. While he hadn’t been paying much attention, it certainly hadn’t felt like the original five goblins greeted him upon adulthood. At least he hoped they didn’t, that would mean he had ignored them.
“You don’t need to call me Dungeon Lord. You can call me Ian. In regards to what I want you to do, I wanted to make sure no intruders could reach my core even though that isn’t immediately life threatening. However, some facets of that plan were predicated on you knowing how to use magic and not innate skills. So, a revision to my plan has been made. While I start making the maze of death/maze of protection, I will also attempt to teach you magic.”
“Attempt?”
“Well, no matter how good I am at magic, I’ve never been a great teacher. I do have a backup plan if my teaching fails, but that would probably require me to save up mana again. I’d much prefer to build up my dungeon at the moment.”
“I see. Shall we begin immediately?”
“Of course. What should I call you?”
“As I have just been created by you, I have no name.”
“....Really? Two of the goblins over there have names. Izu and Mina. Actually, the other three might have names too, I didn’t ask.”
“I do not know why they have names. Perhaps you should ask them?”
The hobgoblin didn’t look like he thought Ian an idiot, but reading facial expressions wasn’t his forte.
“Good idea. Izu and Mina, why do you have names?”
The two jumped at the sudden intrusive voice in their mind, but quickly responded together, ““As we didn’t receive names from my lord (you), we decided to name each other. We are sorry!””
“It’s not a problem. I don’t plan on personally naming every creature in my dungeon anyway. You wouldn’t want me naming your kids right?”
This time only Mina spoke up, “Actually, my lord, having you name our kids would be a great honor!” She looked at Izu, who gave a resolute nod in response.
“Oh, I see. I suppose I can name your first born if you wish it.”
“That would be fantastic, my lord!”
“And, by the way, what are the names of the other three?”
“They haven’t felt the need for names yet, my lord. Izu and I named each other, since we felt it was appropriate.”
“Okay, thanks for the information. I have to go name the hobgoblin now.”
“Before you leave, my lord, when may we speak with the new arrival?”
“Hmm, I plan on teaching him magic, so how about I match up his breaks with yours?”
Mina looked a little down as she muttered, “O-Of course, my lord. Whatever you wish.”
Why was she sad? ….Oh shit. He had promised to teach her swordsmanship, and Izu taming. Well, if he was already splitting his mind two ways, two more wouldn’t hurt.
“I apologize Mina. I said I would teach you and Izu. With that in mind, I’ll teach you all at the same time, so your breaks can match up that way. The other three can choose which course they wish to take.”
A wide grin shone on her face as Mina yelled, “Yes, my lord!”
Feeling happier at her happiness, Ian moved most of his focus back to the hobgoblin.
“So, Mr. Newbie, do you have any preferences for your name?”
The dark green, nearly black hobgoblin stroked his chin for a couple of minutes, and finally answered, “None. I have not really formed a like or dislike for anything yet. I will have to hope I enjoy whatever you pick for me.”
“You know, the fact that you understand the concept of likes and dislikes, before you even have them is the oddest part to me.”
“It is an odd feeling for me as well. For instance, I know that you are a book. I know that books contain written words that contain knowledge, stories, and many other things. I also know books have titles. However, if you were to ask me for the title of a book, I would not be able to give you one.”
“That’s interesting. I have always wondered how non-ecosystem style dungeons dealt with the problem of knowledge for smarter creatures. Of course, a certain level of knowledge is dealt with by natural instincts, but I highly doubted the knowledge of how to make tools and clothes would permeate at an instinctual level. It seems that dungeon creatures are provided with certain knowledge upon creation. That leaves who or what provides the knowledge. Mr. Great is the go to guy, but as always there is a lack of evidence.”
“Mr. Great?”
“Ah, sorry about that. It has to do with the gods, and I’m not sure you want to get involved with that. I’m also not sure if you even can. Now, let’s get started on that magic training, Yirvin.”
“....Yirvin?”
“It’s your name. Do you like it?”
“I have no strong feelings towards it.”
“Sounds perfect then.”
