Chapter 1: The Dragon Scroll

Chapter 1: The Dragon Scroll

Dragons, mythical creatures of absolute power, able to bring catastrophic disaster and plunge the world into a pandemonium ran rampant all over the world laying waste to everything in sight until one lone woman stepped up and subdued the forces of nature. Ever since then, dragon sightings became a rarity.

That's the story Olivia knew from her mother. All she knew was that dragons were vanquished and peace was restored but whenever she inquiried about who put an end to their rampage, her mother beats around the bush. What kind of mythology was that? A mythology with an unknown hero? It didn't make sense however she knew this, ever since the dragons disappeared, the balance of the world had drastically shifted and people called dragon tamers had surfaced with the purpose of taming the mythical forces of nature. Their intentions unknown however, given humanity's history, violence was the answer.

“Olivia come here.” Olivia's mother, Charlotte called from outside getting the attention of Olivia who quickly got up and bolted outside not wanting to make her mother wait.

“Yes mother?” Olivia replied, her blue big eyes radiating curiosity as she cutely toyed with the hems of her dress with her little hands.

Charlotte looked at her young one, and smiled. She placed a hand on her head before kneeling down to be on eye level with Olivia. She was a splitting image of her, same blue eyes, same dark brown tresses and the exact same face shape. Charlotte adored her daughter beyond compare.

Olivia on the other hand wasn't understanding what was happening but she knew that whenever her mother placed her hand on her head, she was going to tell her something important. Even as a child, Olivia was smarter than many her age, at the age of five she could already draw up her mana pool. At the age of seven she could already cast a few magical spells and had already memorized the geographical map of the whole kingdom.

“What's wrong mother?” Olivia asked again, grabbing her mother's hand with her own. Her blue eyes piercing through Charlotte's eyes.

“Listen sweetie, there's something important I have to tell you. We don't have much time so listen to me OK?” Charlotte articulated with her soft voice, a smile painted on her face as she looked at her young one.

‘The road ahead would be difficult but you'll survive sweetie.’ Charlotte thought while she saw Olivia nod her head.

“Good girl, Now sweetie, there's a secret mommy hid from you. You know from that story I told you before? The one about dragons and being malevolent creatures that ran rampant on earth?” Charlotte asked and was instantly answered by Olivia who quickly said yes.

“The true story goes like this, the dragons weren't malevolent creatures but in truth they were guardians until people started to abuse their power and when that happened, they lost their grace turning into malevolent creatures, I was the one to stop them.” Charlotte explained constantly casting a look at her back watching out for something.

Her gestures confused Olivia, why was her mother looking like she was fidgeting? Why did she tell her that she was the one who stopped the dragons? Was something happening that she wasn't aware of? Olivia was getting worried, her eyes started to sparkle as tears formed around the eye. “Mother something wrong?” She asked.

“Not at all Sweetie. But I have to tell you this sweetie, you won't be able to see me for a long time after this. So keep this safe.” Charlotte removed her hand from Olivia's head and took something from her blouse. She placed the scroll on Olivia's hands and kissed her forehead leaving a diamond marking where her lips touched.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

Olivia looked at the scroll in her hands, she had read about scrolls but she never hand seen them in person, she looked at her mother and quickly made her concerns known. “Mother, what is going on? Please tell me.”

Although as intelligent as she was for her age, Olivia was still a child and seeing her mother's worried face made her fear for the worst, she felt her stomach churn, fear grip her heart constricting around it making Olivia start hyperventilating.

Charlotte witnessed this, she quickly embraced Olivia in a hug and whispered in her ear. “Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere I'll forever be with you. Now you must get ready to leave.”

Leave? Where was she supposed to go? But before she could open her mouth, Olivia saw banners flying in the air in the distance and the ground started trembling prefusely. She caught sight of the sigil and her eyes went wide. That was the sigil of one of the twelve noble families making up the hierarchy of the Alvarez.

“Mom what are they doing here?” Olivia asked, one of her hands clutching her mother's blouse tightly.

“It's not only them, all twelve families are here. They have been waiting for this moment for over twenty years. They want that dragon scroll.” Charlotte enunciated as she shielded Olivia behind her while the armies came to a stop having trampled her yard.

She stepped forward, her blue eyes cold silver as her mana spiked and poured from her pores. She had a scowl on her face as she fixated her gaze at the twelve leaders standing before her. “Isn't this a surprise.”

The man in the middle of the lineup stepped forward. He was towering over Charlotte, by a wide margin. Even his physique was that of a brute. He wore royal blue armor all over his body except the head. Behind him was a large double edged sword with the hilt poking from one side of his shoulder and neck. He had wild red hair, piercing orange eyes and a beard. “Cut the sarcasm Charlotte Merlin or should I say Ava Merlin Pendragon.”

Charlotte's eyes widened slightly hearing that name. She regained her composure and stared at the man unblinking. “So you know who I am Lancelot. What do you and the other noble families want out here on the country side? I'm positive you didn't come for some tea.”

“Haha, you are quite the comedian aren't you Pendragon? But you know what we are here for. Hand over the dragon scroll.” Lancelot demanded, exerting his mana pressure cracking the ground and even the house Charlotte and Olivia stayed in.

“I don't have it.” Charlotte answered, she wasn't fazed by the pressure. She had faced rampant dragons with more pressure than his and came out on top.

Lancelot looked to the side, and chuckled again. Whipping his head back, his hand moved swiftly grabbing the sword and in one flick of the hand brought the massive blade atop of Charlotte with the intent to split her in two.

Charlotte moved a bit of her mana to her soles clamping her footing on the ground, while some reinforced her bones, muscles and the density just above that of the material used to forge the blade. She quickly raised her hand and caught the blade wincing at the recoil force.

“I said, I don't gave the scroll now leave before things get messy.”

Lancelot clicked his tongue in annoyance, he knew that she wasn't going to go down that easy. But he had a leverage over her, he smirked at Charlotte who narrowed her eyes at his smirk. “ Oh really, you know we hold all the cards here right? You aren't as strong as you used to be Pendragon. The world was better without you and your family existing. Get the child.”

Charlotte's eyes widened as she casted a glance at her back seeing the two assassins lunge at her daughter. She extended one of her hand, her mana treads flowing to Olivia who was petrified by fear at one spot and the formed a magical sphere which repelled the assassins away while opening a gateway between Alvarez and another place. “You'll be safe with Titania, she will keep you safe. No matter what keep that scroll safe.”

“So you do have the scroll, MAGES CANCEL THE TELEPORTATION NOW. THE CHILD HAS THE SCROLL.” Lancelot yelled as the mages started casting the ritual to cancel the magic but it was futile as before the incantations were even through. Olivia vanished, the last thing she saw was her mother being pierced through by the sword.
