Prologue- The Modern world

I hate work! Such a useless thing to do, who wants to know whether this person has PPI or not, I don’t give a fuck! And I’m sure a lot of other people don’t either, so who the hell came up with the fantastic idea of making a job to suffer abuse. Caelan slammed his head onto the desk, the people around him took no notice, as this was a common occurrence in the office. He looked out of the window, to the grey skies of London, and the ever-growing skyline of buildings. No trees or animals insight. The Dead Zone, Caelan thought, aptly named, as even if it is one of the central hubs of the world, nature had died in London.

Caelan’s eyes took on a misty look, as he thought on the various fantasy worlds he read when he was a kid, a slight smile spread on his face.

“Here he goes again”

“I can’t believe he hasn’t been fired yet”

“He’s just lucky”

Caelan didn’t hear any of the conversations surrounding him; he indulged on his imagination of flying on a back of an elder dragon, with sword and magic in hand. He didn’t hear the conversation stop around him as the atmosphere turned serious he didn’t hear footsteps stop behind him, but he did hear the wind being blown apart from a slap that was being directed to the back of his head. Quicker than the eye can follow, his reactions took over and grabbed the hand, feeling the extra long fingernails, he sighed with relief.

“Hello Anny, what are you doing?” Caelan turned around in his as he saw Anny standing there.

“I was going to slap you” she answered bluntly, with slight amusement in her eyes only seen by Caelan.

“Well, that wasn’t very nice was it, as I was having a five minute break, I don’t thinks its normal for that to be interrupted by a slap is it?” Caelan asked with a sly smile.

The people around him still found it unbelievable, as their hands stopped typing on their keyboards to listen. Anny aka Annabelle, the daughter of the head of the company that Caelan worked in, the perfect ice queen, who has turned down countless people in pursuit of a relationship with her, no one knows why she would go out of her way to meet up with him. Only a few know that they are childhood friends, but surely a reunion once would be enough right?

“Come, let’s go” Anny walked off to the lifts at the end of the room.

“But-“seeing there was no room for argument, he logged off, waved to everyone, and got into the lift with her. As the lift closed off to the office, Anny jumped towards Caelan, with a childlike smile on her face. Only he could see this side of her, and he smiled at her angel like laugh.

“So, where do you want to go today, little monkey?” arching his eyebrow at her dangling with her arms around his neck. “Ohhhh lets go to the cinema, I really want to watch that new film come out with the zombies.” She smiled.

“Ah that one, yeah I wanted to see that too, looks fun. I’ll pay for it, it’s my turn.” Anny’s smile grew deeper, and answered with only a nod of the head. With their arms around each other, they stayed like that for the minutes that they were in the lift for, but before they came out, Anny separated from him, and wore her mask of coldness. Caelan sighed, knowing why she did this. The upper echelons of the city really are strict on their children, not allowing any sorts of relationship that isn’t beneficial for the family, a snarl spread like a flash across his face, but left even faster. Something else to do, he thought.

As they left the building, a McLaren car pulled up at Anny’s feet. With technology as it is today, high class cars have an auto-pilot feature, making the ‘nobles’ of the world more prestigious.

“Should I drive this time?” Caelan asked eagerly. Anny rolled her eyes and got in on the passenger’s side. Caelan clapped his hands together in glee, as he got behind the wheel.

“I still don’t understand why you don’t allow auto-pilot to take over” Anny said.

“Are you kidding me?! You have to at least drive a McLaren, or else it takes away all the pleasure from owning one” Anny only rolled her eyes when he said this.

Caelan, professionally, started up the engine, put it into first gear, and held his hands over the emergency brake. He smiled at Anny and yelled “Lets Ride!”

To Anny’s pleasure, they got to the cinema in one place, and Caelan had a stupid grin on his face as he walked with Anny to get their tickets.

A few hours later they walked out together, laughing.

“Well, that was better than I hoped” Caelan chuckled.

“Haha yeah, that was really funny, especially with the zombie’s head getting stuck in another zombie’s ribcage” she laughed.

“Ha yeah that was funny” Caelan smiled. He looked over to Anny, and a warm glow appeared in his eyes. He hugged her from behind, and Anny smiled slightly at that. They stayed like that for a couple of minutes, before the car arrived at Anny’s feet again.

“Do you want to get Dinner Anny?” Caelan asked out of the blue. Anny looked surprised, but then smiled once more.

“Sure”.

They drove to a restaurant they both knew well, ‘The Rising Dragon’, a very successful Chinese restaurant in the middle of the China Town. They easily got a table, since they were friends with all of the staff there. They ordered the usual, pancakes, duck, lamb, and other traditional cuisines on offer. They were having a good time, until they were noticed by a suitor for Anny.

“Annabelle, what a pleasant surprise!” A man in a crisp refined suit said, as he walked over and stood over their table. Anny put her ‘Ice Queen’ mask on, and bluntly said “Hello Matthew”.

Stolen story; please report.

Caelan kept silent for now, watching the conversation that was unfolding.

“Having dinner, are we? And who with, might I ask?” Matthew asked, his eyes flickering towards Caelan, and, noticing his attire, disgust appeared in his eyes. Caelan noticed this, and sighed. Always the same with the upper class, no respect for those lower than themselves, and thinking that everything is theirs, only Anny is different thankfully, she has respect, and she knows that she is the same as someone like me; it’s just the difference of birth.

“He, Matthew is none of your business, so I would like to ask you to leave so we can continue eating” Anny looked coldly at Matthew. Matthew awkwardly laughed, and then quickly put his hand on her shoulder, “don’t be like that Annabelle, all I want is to talk”. That hand was briskly flicked away by Anny.

“Do not touch me like I’m yours Matthew.” Caelan smiled, well done Anny, sticking up for yourself. Matthew noticed this smile, and grew angry. He slammed on the table, yelling “what do you think you’re laughing at?” The restaurant grew silent, as the tension built in the air.

Caelan smiled “I’m laughing at someone who cannot take the hint that they are unwanted, so please do as Anny asks and leave please, our dinner is growing colder” Matthew’s face visibly grew scarlet in rage, and he struck out a punch towards Caelan, Caelan smirked at this sight, simple provocation is enough? Well then, let’s see the repercussions you get for interrupting our meal. Caelan lazily lifted up his hand, and blocked the punch. Anny looked worried for Caelan, as she moved out of the way, and the staff, seeing Caelan block the punch, started ushering people out of the fight.

“You don’t want to do this Matthew, you won’t win” Matthew responded with a growl, Caelan only shook his head at this, and his gaze sharpened, Matthew and those watching shivered when they saw his eyes.

Matthew threw another punch, and Caelan easily dodged it. Should I make him feel pain? Or should I end it quickly? Looking over at Anny whilst dodging various punches, saw her worried look. Ending it quickly seems to be the choice. Caelan deflected one punch and then, sent various body blows into Matthew, and then, with an uppercut, knocked Matthew out. Not even a decent fight, thought Caelan. Caelan checked Matthew’s condition, and said to one of the staff members “he’s fine, just gonna be sore that’s all” the staff member nodded, and took Matthew into one of their employee rooms.

Everything settled down in a few minutes, but Anny still looked worried, Caelan, getting back to his food, put his hand over Anny’s and asked “what’s wrong?” Anny sighed “don’t you know what you have done?” Caelan shrugged, still eating “he’s the son of one of the biggest business’ in London, and you simply fought him, aren’t you afraid of the ripples that will be made because of this?!” she almost yelled. Caelan only smiled. “Of course I am, but, the ripples won’t affect me because, one he doesn’t know my name, two the staff won’t talk and three because his power is only his father’s, and will his father really send anyone after a nobody like me?” Anny only shook her head. “And even if I was in danger, I would still do it” Anny looked up at Caelan “because he interrupted a wonderful night between us, how could I let that go?” Caelan carried on eating with his chopsticks, as a smile on Anny’s face grew bigger and bigger, until she giggled cutely, before also returning to her dinner.

Caelan drove the car to his house, since Anny lived in the residential area of London, which was a long way away from Caelan’s flat.

“You gonna be alright Caelan?” Anny asked one more time that night, Caelan only smiled, kissed her on the cheek, and got out of the car. As the car sped off, Caelan’s smiling face turned into one of cold anger. As he walked into the apartment complex, the landlady, Mrs Rominov walked out, but as soon as she saw Caelan’s face, she fled in fear back into her room. He walked into his apartment, turned the lights on, and was greeted by his cat. His cold face immediately transformed into one of happiness.

“Hey June” the cat meowed back.

“You hungry?” the cat nodded her head.

“Come on then” and man and cat walked together into the kitchen.

Caelan got a packet from a cupboard in his kitchen, and, after taking out every last drop of food, gave it to June. He stroked her head as she ate, and then walked off into the front room. All that was there was a chair, TV and blanket, nothing else of importance, except for a bar that hung across the door.

Caelan took his clothes, with only his pants on. And started working out, push-ups, sit-ups, chin-ups. He did this for an hour, with June looking at him. All those pompous upper class, with no respect for anything! They only work to destroy the planet and the life of everything living on it. I guess all humans are the same, not caring for anything other than themselves. Humans only consume, they do not give, they do not respect life, and they do not help the world. The world is dying because of them and their need to have and want more. It only makes my mission stronger, and my want for a fantasy world to become ever stronger. Caelan looked out of the window whilst doing chin-ups, to see that light polluted sky, the billowing smoke of the factories in the distance, and the dead pigeons that are rotting on the roofs of the buildings. Until an hour passed did he stop, then he washed himself down, and got into bed with his cat. “Night June,” and June meowed back.
